WORDS AND WEAPONS.
Trouble Between Neighbors That Waa
Stopped on the Verge of Bloodahed.
A neighbors' quarrel that stopped just
short of tragedy occurred last Sunday
morning on Ames street, when Jacob
Wegman and John Goeltz, who .reside side
by side, became involved in a wordy encounter
that resulted in a rifle and hoe
being brandished by the participants. As
the story was told iu police court yesterday morning
by the different parties, it
appeared that Wegman had been told that
Goeltz had said he (Wegman) had stolen
some article from Goeltz.
Wegman asked Goeltz why he had said
that he was a thief. Goeltz denied that
he made any such statement. Wegman
insisted that he had, and threw in some
verbal embellishments with his accusation
that naturally made Goeltz angry, and
warm words filled the air from both sides of
the line fence. The calm Sabbath air was
so unusually rent with the sounds of argument
that many neighbors drew near to
view the outcome.
Percy Celsey, who was in Goeltz's
house. appeared on the scene with a rifle,
and fearing that Wegman would do violence
with a hoe which he was flourishing,
put a warlike appearance to the scene by
threatening to shoot Wegman if he came
over the line on to Goeltz's property.
Wegman raised the hoe in a threatening
manner, and the man behind the gun drew
a bead on him, at which the bystanders
suddenly decided to take a hand and pre-
vent bloodshed. While some disarmed
Wegman of the hoe, others persuaded
Celsey to lay down his gun. The combatants
finally decided to cease active hostilities
for the time being. Goeltz procured
a warrant for Wegman, with the
result that after the story was told iu
police court yesterday morning. Wegman
was fined $5.

In Auswirkung des im Jahre 1954 zwischen der Bundesregierung und Frankreich geschlossenen Kriegsgräberabkommens wurde beschlossen, unter Zubettung weiterer deutscher Toter die Anlage bei La Cambe zu einem endgültigen deutschen Soldatenfriedhof zu gestalten. Sie bot sich in jeder Weise hierzu an, um so mehr, als die französische Regierung einer Erweiterung bereitwilligst zustimmte, wobei die Gesamtfläche auf 7 Hektar vergrößert wurde.

Die Zubettung der Toten aus vielen kleineren Anlagen und den äußerst zahlreichen Feldgräbern in offenem Gelände war im wesentlichen im Juni des Jahres 1958 beendet. Nach Abschluß dieser Arbeiten hatten 20507 deutsche Gefallene ihre letzte Ruhestätte in La Cambe gefunden.

Beim Ausbau wurden die für die normannische Landschaft typischen Wälle und Knicks mit Rasenböschungen, deren Krone mit Sträuchern und Bäumen bestanden sind, als Einfassung der Gesamtanlage beibehalten. Infolge der notwendigen Erweiterung und Begradigung des Geländes war die Neuanlage einiger Wälle erforderlich. Diese Aufgabe wurde durch ein internationales Jugendlager im Jahre 1958 bewältigt.

Die baulichen und gärtnerischen Arbeiten begannen im Juni 1958. Sie waren im August 1961 beendet, so daß die Anlage am 21. September 1961 in feierlicher Form und in Anwesenheit zahlreicher Angehöriger der Gefallenen eingeweiht und damit der Öffentlichkeit übergeben werden konnte.

Der Besucher betritt den Friedhof durch ein Eingangsgebäude, das 14,50 Meter in der Länge und 6,80 Meter in der Breite misst. Das Mauerwerk besteht aus werksteinmäßig bearbeitetem Granit, das Dach ist mit Kupferblech abgedeckt. Das Gebäude enthält drei Räume, und zwar einen durch die Mitte des Baues führenden Vorraum, der zum Gräberfeld hin offen und von zwei kannelierten Säulen flankiert wird. Von hier aus geht der Blick des Besuchers über den Vorhof und den gepflasterten Weg entlang zu dem Tumulus mit seiner hohen Kreuzgruppe. Rechts vom Vorraum liegt der Listenraum, der durch ein geschmiedetes Gitter abgeschlossen werden kann. Hier ist in einer Nische ein feuervergoldeter Schrein eingelassen, in welchem die Verzeichnisse mit den Namen der hier Bestatteten aufbewahrt werden. Eine pultartig gearbeitete Fensternische dient als Auflage bei der Einsichtnahme in die Namenbücher. Links vom Vorraum befindet sich der Aufenthaltsraum der Besucher, der durch eine massive Tür geschlossen werden kann.

An den Eingangsbau schließt sich ein Vorhof an, der mit Natursteinplatten und Katzenkopfpflaster belegt ist. In der Mitte des Gräberfeldes hat ein großes Kameradengrab die unbekannten Toten aufgenommen. Über diesem Kameradengrab wölbt sich ein fast sechs Meter hoher Tumulus, der von einem Granitmauerring eingefaßt ist. Ein über 4 Meter hohes Basaltkreuz mit zwei tragenden Seitenfiguren ist auf einem halbmannshohen Sockel errichtet.

Das Gräberfeld ist in 49 Blocks gegliedert. Die Gräber sind durch Namensteine mit den Personalien von je zwei Toten gekennzeichnet. Gruppen von größeren Kreuzen gliedern die Gräberfläche auf. Dem gleichen Zweck dient die hainartige Baumbepflanzung von Eichen und Buchen, die sich nach der Mitte des Gräberfeldes auflockert, um hier eine große Lichtung einzurahmen. Nach vier Seiten hin lassen Durchblicke, die von den begrenzenden Wällen aufgefangen werden, die Größe des Friedhofes in Erscheinung treten.

Anfahrt:
Lage des Friedhofes: 1. LA CAMBE, Dep. Calvados Abfahrt von der Straße N 13 Bayeux ­ Cherbourg zum Ort La Cambe, dann Ausschilderung folgen, etwa 12 km vor dem Ort Isigny sur Mer, 26 km von Bayeux entfernt.

Anreise: 1. mit der Bahn: Anfahrt erfolgt am besten über Paris, von dort aus für beide Friedhöfe zunächst auf der Bahnstrecke Cherbourg bis Lisieux ­ Bahnstation für St. Desir­de­ Lisieux, zum Friedhof ca. 5 km nur mit Taxi. Weiter über Caen nach Bayeux, Lison (Lison befindet sich zwischen Saint­Lö und Isigny/Mer, ca. 15 km südlich von La Cambe) oder Carentan ­ Bahnstation für La Cambe. Von Bayeux aus mit dem Bus in Richtung Isigny. Etwa 7 km vor dem Ort Isigny liegt La Cambe. Oder mit dem Bus von Carentan zum Friedhof, ­von Bayeux 26 km, von Carentan 18 km.

2: mit dem Pkw: a. von Köln über Aachen ­ Lüttich ­ Dinant ­ Cambrai Amiens ­ Rouen ­ Lisieux

Wenn man nicht über Lisieux will, ist es einfacher und schneller, von Rouen ab über die Autobahn bis Caen zu fahren und dann weiter in Richtung Cherbourg über Bayeux (N 13).

ca. 2 km hinter dem Ort liegt der Friedhof auf der linken Straßenseite.
