Memories of Joan Patricia Engel Clark Alden: Feb. 1997
Andrew Otto Engel and Zelma Irene Moyer were married January 26, l924 in Fort Wayne, IN. Joan Patricia was born to them on May 9, l924 in Ft. Wayne at St. Joseph Hospital.
I actually remember very little about my father since he and Mother were divorced when I was so small. I do remember visiting him and my step-mother in Racine, WI, twice. The first time was in l932-33 when the Chicago World's Fair was on. Mother took me to Chicago on the Erie train and we met my Dad at the Dearborn Station. I recall hearing Mother tell that my Dad had declared his love for her still and was hopeful that she would consider coming back to him which she didn't do. His wife, Patricia, was a nice lady - she was very attractive and always very good to me. I visited again in about l935. I know that Mother had sewed many new clothes for me as she wanted me to look just so on my visit there. Pat and I were in the back yard one afternoon when the neighbor's dog bit me on the right ankle and poor Pat was nearly hysterical! She called my dad home from work and they took me right to the doctor's office. Of course, nothing ever came of it. Pat's mother lived with them, I believe, and she was very nice, too. I remember that I was a nail biter and Pat's mom told me a story about a young girl who bit her nails. She got sick and had to have her stomach opened up and the doctor found all those nails sticking to the inside of her tummy......it certainly impressed me and I stopped biting my nails.. 60 years later, I told the same story to Pat Orr Landis' granddaughter, Jodi, who also bit her nails and she stopped, too. She told me in l995 that the reason she quit, was because she didn't want her tummy full of fingernails!

I remember that on the day of my Grandmother Engel's funeral, my cousin, Virginia Young and I wanted to roller skate. My father told me not to do that as one of us might fall and get hurt but we insisted and were skating in the middle of Poplar St. which was mostly cobblestones. Sure enough, I fell and really skinned my knee which upset the Engel family as I wasn't able to kneel in church for the funeral. It was the worst skinned knee that I ever had!

I have one other recollection of my father visiting in Huntington. Pat was with him along with their two sons, William (Billy) and Michael. The boys were about seven and five - very good looking children. I believe that this was the last time that I saw or spoke to my father. Oh yes - I remember one Christmas, he sent me a very large box marked "Do Not Open Until Christmas" I thought that I couldn't wait but Mother refused to let me open the box. It contained a beautiful baby doll, maybe 18" or 20" tall dressed in a white and pink dress with pink knitted sweater, cap and booties. It was the best present ever!

When I was about l2 years old, my father sent $29.95 for a new bicycle for me. Mother and I went down to Montgomery Ward's and bought a bright red Schwinn. Granddaddy Moyer taught me to ride it.


Kathy's Memories: Feb. 1997
I only have one brief memory of my Grandfather, Andrew Otto Engel. I remember one time stopping by the Engel home up on Poplar Street. I was in the car out front and I remember Mother was outside of the car on the sidewalk....I can't remember if she was just leaving the Engels or arriving.....but I can remember her talking to someone and whether she introduced us or said later I knew he was my Grandfather. I think she said this is (my daughter or your granddaughter) Kathy but I wouldn't swear to it. Anyway I don't remember him speaking to me I just kind of remember thinking this is my Grandfather......I can't even picture a face. I wish I could. I remember feeling bad for Mother. I still do...I just cannot imagine what it would be like to have a parent who you really didn't know. It was very confusing to me and I think I had very mixed emotions that day. I was a pre-teenager at the time, probably this was prior to our move to Califronia in 1959. That was the one and only time I ever saw him, and probably the last time my Mother saw him.

His occupation is listed as "clerical worker."They were married in Ft. Wayne January 26, 1924 by J. Loehamer. They lived in Ft. Wayne and Zelma pursued her career as a professional pianist. Andrew found employment at a steel mill in Cleveland but Zelma declined to move there to be with him because of her career in Ft. Wayne. Andrew filed for divorce December 12, 1925, finalized January 8, 1926. NOTE: Andrew was Roman Catholic and Zelma belonged to the Disciples of Christ.

Andrew and Mary Engel had six children - Herman was the oldest and Magdalena was the youngest. Aunt Doggie never worked but stayed home and took care of the house and family. She was such a great cook and fixed lots of good German food including what was called cinnamon Kouckin (?) or coffee cake. When I spent the night at that house, we'd often have the coffeecake and coffee for breakfast. My Mother anguished over me going there because she knew that they'd allow me to have coffee ....I was maybe seven or eight yrs. old. The funny thing was that altho they used HUGE old-fashioned china mugs, Aunt Doggie filled the cup over half full of milk (with an abundance of sugar) and the amount of coffee that I actually got was probably less than afourth of a cup!! One of the best games that Ginny and I got to play was hide and seek because there were lots of places to hide in that old big house. Another really fun thing was that the house had a very large walk-in pantry and sometimes, we could play house in that pantry...that pantry was a treasure. In the summer time, Ginny and I could take empty milk bottles back to Mattern's Grocery and redeem them for cash when we then got to spend on candy. I clearly remember the big room called the summer-kitchen. It served as another place to cook, can, wash and visit when the rest of the house was pretty warm in the summer and in the winter, it was always toasty warm and the family spent a lot of time there. Ginny and I knew that we weren't to go into the garage - I don't remember why. The upstairs of the house always intregued us and especially the large walk-in closet. It held so many treasures and Ginny and I loved to snoop. In later years, that was where the old music box was kept. At some point, maybe about 1985 or 1986, my son John Clark was in Huntington on a visit, asked to see the upstairs of the house on Poplar Street and Aunt Doggie showed him the big closet. When John saw the music box, he commented on it and Aunt Doggie gave it to him. I remember so well that Ginny and I always thought that Aunt Doggie was so pretty and always dressed to well...she always wore really high-heeled black patent-leather shoes to Church, and to us, that meant she was stylish! The last time that I saw her was in 1987. On that day, my husband, Les and I went up to the Engel house to visit. We tried to take her to lunch but she said that she wasn't dressed and she wouldn't go so we begged her to get ready and we'd be back to take her to dinner but she refused. I did question her about dates of births and deaths of her sisters and brothers and she gave those dates to me...also she gave me their middle names. I asked if she had any pictures of the family that she's share with me and she said, "oh, Honey, I'll dig them out and will have them ready for you the next time you're in Huntington." Of course, I never did get them. Aunt Doggie always called me JoAnnie. The two things I asked for that Aunt Doggie gave me were a picture of me with my Grandmother taken in the side yard of the Poplar Street house. Also, a pale green pitcher that looks like it might have been part of a chocolate set. Her brothers and sisters all called her Honey.

As a baby, Mother employed a "nurse-maid" and when we moved to Huntington, I was cared for by a young lady from Warren, IN named Anna Adsit. She was employed to look after me when Mother was working in Ft. Wayne. She also helped my grandmother (Muddie) with the house. Muddie was not very well for years - I remember my Mother saying that she could never remember her mother being well. Muddie was not into kids - she loved to have Uncle Bill, Ada Lee, Dickie Lynn and Nancy come from Indianapolis to visit but was so glad when they left as the children made her very nervous. She was not mean to me but certainly wasn't pleased with much of what I did or said. I don't know if she was resentful because my mother and father had to get married which was a calamity in l924 or whether she just didn't really feel warmth for any children. I dreaded the two or three days a week that Mother traveled to Ft. Wayne for her radio show and left me with Muddie. I would sit beside the radio in the living room just waiting for her program to begin. When it was over, I'd stand by the front window watching for her to walk up Byron St. and home.I remember that we often took the Interurban to Ft. Wayne just to shop. The depot was located on E. Market Street and I believe that the fare each way was 75 cents (25 miles each way). On the way home in the early evening, we could count the houses that had already installed electric lights and those which still had karosene lamps. Little by little, the lamps disappeared as did the out-houses! The main place to shop in Ft. Wayne was the Wolf and Dessauer store. About 5 floors of shopping and on the sixth floor was the Tea Room which was a wonderful place to have lunch. They put on a fashion show at lunchtime. The fashions were presented from the exclusive Crystal Room. In later years, Mother bought many of her clothes from the Crystal Room and was always served by Mrs. Dunkelberg.I remember that after our (Don and Joan's) house burned down on March l8, l947, I was left with only borrowed clothes so on March l9th, Don and I went to Ft. Wayne to buy all new clothes. We had lunch in the Tea Room and one of the models had on a three piece black suit of the finest wool I had ever seen. Don insisted that I get that suit (it was a size l2). When we went down to the Crystal Room to try it on, I nearly fainted when Mrs. Dunkelberg said the price was $l00.00. Don was adament that I get it which I did. The funny thing is that I probably only wore it two or three times as, unbeknown to me, I was pregnant and it just didn't fit very long. Then after Kathy was born, I never really got into it again before I was pregnant again. But it was beautiful to the feel.

Joan married Don Clark on 19 Jan 1947 in Huntington, Huntington County, Indiana, USA.
