MELBA LEONA AVERS 
Melba Leona Avers, 104, formerly of Clyde, died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2003, 
at Elmwood Nursing Home in Green Springs. 
She was a resident of Clyde from 1943 to 1978 and lived at Kiwanis Manor 
in Tiffin from 1978 to 1999. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran 
Church in Clyde and the Missionary Circle. She was a former Sunday 
School teacher at Lewisville, Cleveland and Clyde and was known as the 
story lady with Scene-o-Felt pictures and Bible stories. She was a 
member of the former Welcome Farms Women Club, Religious Education 
School Release Time in Tiffin and she taught a week-long course at 
Lutheran Chautauqua in Lakeside for five years. 
She was a graduate of Lewisville High School and Bliss Business College 
in Columbus, receiving the Gregg shorthand teacher's certificate. From 
1920 to 1932 she was stenographer to the chief bank examiner of National 
Bank Examiners at the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland. From 1951 to 
1956 she worked in the cafeteria at the South Main St. School in Clyde. 
She was the recipient of the Exchange Club Book of Golden Deeds in Clyde 
in 1970. 
She was born June 12, 1899, in Lewisville to the late William and Emma 
Sebach Zerger and was predeceased by four brothers, Francis, Bernard, 
Paul and Walton Zerger. She married Paul Henry Avers Oct. 12, 1922, and 
he died Feb. 27, 1954. 
She is survived by two sons, the Rev. Robert P. (Joanne) Avers of Tiffin 
and the Rev. James W. (Linda) Avers of Fremont; a foster daughter, Ruby 
Miller of Marysville; six foster grandchildren; and 10 foster 
great-grandchildren. 
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul Lutheran 
Church in Clyde. The Rev. Gerry Gosnell will officiate and burial will 
be at the McPherson Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 
p.m. Tuesday at the Mitchell-Auxter Funeral Home in Clyde. 
Memorial contributions may be made to the church.
