Betty J. Wengert Griffith Birth: Sep. 30, 1923 Death: Jun. 13, 2008 Betty Jean Griffith of Rainier passed away June 13, 2008, at home. She was born Sept. 30, 1923, to Grover Phillip and Gladys Eleanor (Quayle) Wengert. She graduated from Centralia high School in Illinois in 1940 and later from Eastern State Teacher's College. In June 1944, Betty joined the Army, serving during World War II. She was honorably discharged April 26, 1946. Betty married Raymond John Griffith Oct. 29, 1949. He preceded her in death May 29, 1993. Betty was a teacher in Rainier area schools for 10 years and worked at Montgomery Ward for 27 years. She enjoyed camping, fishing, traveling and most of all being with family. She was a big fan of the Blazers and the Pistons. Betty was loving, witty and was always ready with a comeback. Betty is survived by three sons, Mike and James Griffith, both of Rainier and Richard Griffith of Salem, Ore.; four daughters, Toni Olson of Canby, Ore., Karen Griffith-Hoppen of Longview, Gloria Parker in Georgia and Kathy Norman of Rainier; a sister, Kathryn Johnstone of Patoka, Ill.; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Betty was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Wengert; and a grandson, Eric Griffith. A service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Nativity of Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church in Rainier. Committal will follow at Hudson II Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Thursday at Groulx Family Mortuary, Alston's Corner, 25381 Wonderly Road, Rainier.
