By 1926 he was one of the largest growers in the area with 120 acres. The Herbert Hoover Farms north of the new U.S. Experimental Station harvested 310 acres that year. The year 1924 was an outstanding potato year, price-wise. Shafter shipped 431 cars. This spurred interest in spuds and in 1925 Shafter shipped 466 cars. The following year 600 cars went out. By this time potatoes were dug by horse-drawn mechanical diggers but were graded and sacked in the fields in wheat bags. Potato washers came out in 1932. The price boomed to over $6.00. Consequently, plantings were heavy in 1937. There were 7,755 cars and trucks that rolled out of Shafter during that season. Shafter had more potato packing sheds than any other city in the nation and had earned title of "Potato Capital of the World."Clarence Neuman said his dad paid off most of his debts in 1936 but times were really tough through the twenties and early thirties. The lived on beans and homemade bread, worked hard but also had a lot of fun. He said much trading was done on a barter basis without cash. He remembers his dad trading potatoes for machinery as well as other goods and services. The four Neuman boys ... Clarence, Marvin, Herbert and Harvey were built-in assets to their father. They operated the business of Robert Neuman and Sons as a partnership since 1938.Mr. Robert Neuman indulged in his boyhood love of horses by starting the "Neuman Stables" in 1947. He passed away October 23, 1960.=============================
