Val Kary, son of Philip and Anna (La Frank) Kary was born at Bismarck on April 3, 1905. He attended schools at Conn and South of Leith.
When the family lived at Kiser a freight train came through and sparks from the smoke stack set fire to the wooden driveway of the elevator. A section crew was working a mile away, so when Val saw the fire he jumped on a saddle horse and rode to tell the crew about the fire set by the train. The crew came on the railroad pump cart and put the fire out. For this the railroad company gave Val a day's wages and renamed the town of Kiser to Kary, after Val. This town is gone now but can still be found on some old railroad books and maps.
After his father's death he lived on their farm near St. Joe and helped his mother raise the younger children until his marriage to Barbara Wetzstein. They made their home on a farm 5 miles south of Almont. Barbara died in 1973 at the age of 67.
The couple had six daughters, they are: Elvina, who married Roger Schultz have six children - Mark, Brenda, Victoria, Eric, Wade, Meda. They have one grandchild: Monocot. They are residing in Bismarck. Irene, married Alden Olson, who died in 1972 have four children: Gregory, Blaine, Bethany, and Melissa. Irene and family live in Almont. Delores, married Wallace Toepke and have three boys: Pat, Jay, and Kirk. They live in Mandan. Anna (Ann) married Adam Gratz and they have two children: Sean and Mara. There living in Dickinson. Veronica (Ange) is married to Gary Tressel and they are living in Seattle, Washington. Ange has seven girls: Maureen, Colleen, Ruth Ann, Christine, Debra, Kathy, and Jennifer. Maria (Mary) is married to David Hoffman and they have one child, Deirdre. The family is living in Gillette, Wyoming. Val married Gladys Nelson Kary in 1974.
