  http://www.genealogy.com/ftm/f/o/c/Harry-C-Fockler/WEBSITE-0001/UHP-1271.html Grandpa Eyer sent a birthday present to each of his Grandchildren, withoutfail.The handmade card would contain a penny for each year and was always decorated with a bird which grandpa would sketch by hand.He was a rather small man, perhaps 5'6" and 135# and he always wore bib overalls. Although I was not aware of it, my brother and sister informed me that grandpa also had a hemp patch that he maintained through the years. I remember the farm.The house was quite small with only a large kitchen,small living room (with the wood stove near the center, and a bedroom.A trap door in the kitchen (or bedroom at the kitchen door) opened to a true root cellar.I only remember being down there once, and the floor and walls were all earthen with shelves of some sort that were loaded with canned vegetables grown on the farm.There were also containers of apples on the floor.I think that the total size was perhaps 6'x7'x5'high. There were a number of out buildings.A smokehouse was located just out the back door.It was a small building, perhaps 4'x6'. Behind the house was a small barnyard, perhaps 50' square.The barn was on the back side of the barnyard.It always seemed large to me, but was probably only about 20x30.I remember a large grinding stone that set either in the barnyard or just outside of it.The wheel was perhaps 20"x2.5" and there was a can above it that would trickle water on the stone. Across the drive from the house (to the North), there was an apple orchard that ran along the main road.There were maybe a dozen trees and they were pretty old.They were really great for climbing, and that was one thing that grandpa did not allow.I regret to say that I and cousin Wilma Jean Gregory were guilty of the offense on more than several occasions. Behind the orchard there were several buildings.One was a sort of garage and the others may have been chicken or pig pins.There was one chicken house behind the house and before the barn, on that (south) side of their driveway. And most important, the house containing the Sears catalog was located to the rear of the other buildings and almost as far back as the barn.It was an heroic journey during the winter. I never really knew where the fields were.Just to the south of the house by maybe 100 yds. therewas a small stream.Since we usually visited during the summer, the stream was barely flowing.There were a few "holes"where there was enough water to wade us to my knees, and a few small fish and craw dads around.Mother (Susan) said that there was enough water there to swim in, but that may have been after a rainy spell. We visited the site of the old home in October of 1996.The buildings have all been removed and there is a corn field where the house once stood.The creek had no running water and was dry except for several small puddles.The area between the creek and where the house stood is a hill and has grown wild. -------------------------------------------------------------------- ------- Confirmed into the Saint James Luthern Church by John Moser on 32 May 1886. Fritschle Cemetery Record -------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- Uncle George Eyer's Family (As written by Vera Shaw in her Family History Manuscript.) Uncle George Eyer was a school teacher before he married Aunt Della. He did not teach after he married. He attended college and was well read.Uncle George made Chester and Violet a heavy steel forged Screwdrivers as a wedding present. He was very good at math. one time when Dad and I visit him and his son Jake, he showed me a very healthy marijuana plant which he was cultivating. He had a very well cared for garden. He took care of it with a hoe and the ditches ran everywhere to carry the excess water off. Once I visited, before Aunt Della died. It was on a Sunday afternoon and Jim had just brought his bride, Blanche home from Ohio. The Eyer boys had gone hunting in the morning and Aunt Della had fried a dishpan full of quail. Every time anyone would go by the pan, they would grab up a fist full of fried quail. Also, I remember going up the narrow stairs with Dessie Mae and seeing at least a dozen different kinds of iron animal banks. I had never seen so many in one place. I had a horse and my brother Russ had a rabbit. Dad told me that once Uncle George was up at the Asbraw on one of those annual summer overnight fishing trips. They all woke up in the night fighting mosquitoes. Their fires had gone out. Uncle George told them there was no real reason to rebuild the fire that he had a simpler solution. He went around to the other side of the wagon and got a handful of axle grease,came back and passed it around telling them to smear it all over themselves. He said he would guarantee it to rout out the mosquitoes. He left camp before day break.(One had to act fast to get ahead of Uncle George Eyer.) Uncle George also had a light rigged up on a buttery. The light was up by the family clock and when one of the kids would come in late he could check the time himself with out getting out of bed. The Eyer Family George Jacob Eyer and Ann Bradle were married in Germany at Rhinebier and lived there until 1837. They had children when they came into New York Harbor July 1, 1837.
