Bio: Edward A. "Clucker" Makelke, 80, Mandan, died May 21, 2011, at his residence in Mandan. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, May 27, at Spirit of Life Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Patrick Schumacher as celebrant. Burial will be at Mandan Union Cemetery.Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. today at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, with a parish vigil at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour before the service at the church on Friday.Ed was born May 22, 1930, in Mandan, the son of Jacob (Jack) and Rose (Christman) Makelke. He was raised and educated in Mandan, graduating from Mandan High School. It was at Mandan High where he met the love of his life, Shirley Boehm. Ed and Shirley were married on Oct. 29, 1955. Ed was a lifelong employee of Ressler Chevrolet, starting at the age of 16 for F&M Davis, becoming the parts manager until he retired in 1994, after 49 years of service. Ed and Shirley enjoyed every minute they shared together, with favorite pastimes dancing, Sunday drives with the kids and fishing, just to name a few.Dedicating 49 years of hard work and service to the Chevy dealership, Ed and Shirley were able to see the world as a result of receiving numerous awards and recognitions. After he was done for the day at the Chevy dealership, Ed also raised vegetables to sell on a seven-acre truck farm, with his dad. His love of gardening was a lifelong passion, every year providing his kids and grandkids with an abundant supply of vegetables. Ed enjoyed fishing, hunting, being outdoors and was a great cook, always accommodating special requests from his family. Spaghetti and meatballs, chicken and noodles and cucumber salad were just a few meals often requested. As an avid deer hunter, Ed dabbled in making homemade sausage.He was member of the Mandan Elks for approximately 60 years. Ed was known for his excellent dancing skills, in particular, the jitterbug. He participated as the clown for the Elks parades and cooked for the Stags on numerous occasions.Dad/Grandpa Eddy, will be deeply missed ? you live on in all of us.Ed is survived by his children, Billie Jane (Don) Leingang-Zentner, Vicki Makelke and Tom (Kara) Makelke; grandchildren, Dustin (Jen) Leingang, Lindsay Leingang (fiance, John Schaf), Crystal (Jamie) Wong, John Engstrom and Jack Makelke; great-grandson, Levin Wong; and numerous nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Shirley; parents, Jack and Rose; brother, Leo; and sister, Matilda "Tillie".Go to www.weigelfuneral.com to sign the online guest book and view flower and tribute photos.Source: Bismarck Tribune, May 26, 2011
