Jacob “Jake” Hertz, 87, Mandan, died Oct. 7, 2015, at Sanford Health, Bismarck. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 12, at First Lutheran Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Lee Herberg officiating. Burial will be at Mandan Union Cemetery following the service. The family will be receiving friends one hour prior to the service on Monday.
Jake was born Dec. 18, 1927, in Mandan, to Jacob M. and Emma (Lohstreter) Hertz. He was raised and educated in Mandan, graduating from Mandan High School in 1946. He entered the U.S. Army in 1946, where he served in Japan. After his discharge from the military, he attended the bricklaying school in Wahpeton. He married Dorothy Mickelson on Aug. 5, 1949, in Mandan. Jake worked as a bricklayer for many years, then started Hertz Masonry, retiring in 1995.
In his younger years, Jake enjoyed snowmobiling, camping with his family and traveling. In his later years, he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Dorothy, Mandan; his children, Dewey (Marsha) Hertz, Bozeman, Mont., Pat (Nancy) Hertz, Mandan, Kerby (Barb) Hertz, Minot, Sandy Hertz, Bismarck, Dave (Denese) Hertz, Idaho Falls, Idaho, and Brad (Deb) Hertz, Jake (Peggy) Hertz, Mari Severson (Page Larson) and Nikki (Dan) Boger, all of Mandan; 19 grandchildren, Vanessa (Brent) Williams, Jason (Carrie) Hertz, Melanie (Rob) Ford, Deanne (Stewart) Schatz, Holly (Mike) Owens, Candice Turner (Brad Kraft, fiance), Ryan (Erin) Hertz, Brandon (Camy) Hertz, Angie (Trevor) Brown, Tyler (Shanna) Hertz, Ashley (Mike) Holst, Krystall (Tyler) Atkinson, Cory (Stacy) Hertz, Benjamin (Katie) Hertz, Jacob (Miranda) Hertz, Megan (Jeremy) Ensign, Eli Severson, Bridget (Jon) Welch and Dani Boger; and 41 great-grandchildren, Camryn Williams, Emma Hertz, Coleton, Jaxon and Easton Ford, Kaeley, Daxton, Traeden, Greyson, Trustn, Jamyn and Imani Schatz, Cassidy (Cory, fiance) and Caleb Owens, Tatum, Taylee and Tiecyn Hertz, Zach (Victoria) Hertz, Nathan and Ethan Hertz, Cody and Kayla Rish, Chase and Cole Brown, Rylee and Paige Hertz, Triptyn and Paisyn Holst, Evan and Parker Atkinson, Talyn, Kinley, Boden and Maisyn Hertz, Madison and Logan Hertz, Caleb and Carson Hertz and Jakson, Connor and Aiden Ensign; one great-great-grandchild, Alaric Hertz. He is also survived by his sisters, Lois Peterson, Bismarck, and Delores (Art) Fitterer, Glen Ullin; and his sisters-in-law, Betty Riedlinger, Bismarck, and JoAnn Axt, Wilton.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Robert, Donald and Raymond Hertz; his brothers-in-law, John Stenslie, John Peterson, Galen Riedlinger and Donald Axt; his sisters-in-law, Jeannie Hertz and Marian Hertz; one son-in-law, Louis Ohlhauser; and one great-grandchild, Adam Atkinson.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent in Jake’s honor to Bismarck Cancer Center.
