The funeral service for Leland W. “Sonny” Berreth, 69 of Leola will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. James Lutheran Church in Leola. Father Tom Clement will officiate.
Interment will follow at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Cemetery, Leola.
A prayer service will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at St. James Lutheran Church in Leola, with visitation starting at 5 p.m.
Leland Wayne “Sonny” Berreth was born September 4, 1946 on his family farm south of Leola to Albert & Gladys (Tschappat) Berreth. He attended Leola Public School and graduated with the Class of 1964. Following High School, he worked at Hub City Iron in Aberdeen. On June 17, 1967 he was united in marriage to Nancy Kindelspire in Leola. They resided in Aberdeen until the spring of 1970, when they returned to the farm. During his time on the farm they milked cows for 29 years. He also owned two registered paint stallions that sired many colts around the area, creating what we call “Sonny’s Paints.” Through this venture they met many great “Horse Enthusiasts” that became lifelong friends. One of his greatest passions in life was “patenting” his inventions, from creating a reversed H tractor to converting his combine into a field sprayer. He loved to work with his hands and could always be found in his shop, if he wasn’t in at the Co-op Station “giving direction.”
He was member of the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, McPherson County Zoning Committee, Leola Sportsman’s Club and for many years with the Leola Trail Riders and American Paint Horse Association.
Sonny died unexpectedly Friday, June 24, 2016 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital in Aberdeen.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Nancy of Leola; children, Jodi (Mike) Kallas, Jeff (Susie) Berreth all of Leola and Kelli (Troy) Millard of Frederick. Grandchildren, Kayla (Jack) Daly of Aberdeen, Steven Kallas, Abigail & Audree Berreth all of Leola, Gabby Millard of Frederick, Step-Granddaughter, Michaela Odegaard-Millard of Aberdeen and one Great-Grandson, Jett Daly of Aberdeen with another Great-Grandchild due in January 2017. One brother, Larry (Pat) Berreth of Aneta, ND and one sister, Marilyn (Doug) Casey of Leola, one brother-in-law, James Busch of Aberdeen; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Arlen and one sister, Darlys Busch.
Pallbearers will be Steven Kallas, Jack Daly, Ryan Casey, Kent Weiszhaar, Wade Weiszhaar & Chris Sieh.
Ushers will be Ron Geffre and Ronnie Kappes.
