Birth: Sep. 7, 1917 Rochester Olmsted County Minnesota, USA Death: Feb. 3, 1997 Rochester Olmsted County Minnesota, USA Obituary: Harold Leo Schaefer 02/03/1997 A funeral Mass will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday for Harold Leo Schaefer, 79, of 915 13th Ave. N.W., who died today (Feb. 3, 1997) at Maple Manor Nursing Home. The service will be at St. Pius X Catholic Chuch with the Revs. Michael Cronin and Paul Suprenant officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Mr. Schaefer, a retired IBM employee, was born Sept. 7, 1917, in Rochester. He lived in Rochester all his life. As a youth he was a Post-Bulletin carrier and later woked for the Kahler Hotel and American Tobacco Co. before going to work for IBM in 1956. He retired from IBM in 1982. Prior to 1940, he served in the Minnesota National Guard. He was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church, the IBM 25th Century Club and a former member of the Knights of Columbus and the Junior Chamber of Commerce. On June 8, 1938, he married Barbara R. Messer at St. John's Catholic Church in Rochester; she survives. She is a former Kahler Hotel employee. Survivors include four sons, Terry Schaefer of Tucson, Ariz., Bruce Schaefer of Hartsburg, Mo., amd Michael Schaefer and Tom Schaefer, both of Rochester; four daughters, Rosie (Mrs. Paul) Toogood of Stewartville, Mary Hoover, Patricia (Mrs. Scott) Heck and Cindy (Mrs. Steven) Shones, all of Rochester; 19 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Lorraine Perry of Minneapolis and Irene (Mrs. Donald) Canfield of Venice, Fla. He was preceded in death by a brother. Friends may call at Macken Funeral home from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today. There will be a prayer service at 7 p.m. at the mortuary. The family prefers memorials to St. Pius School.
