Joe was born July 28, 1924, in Richardton, to Nick and Pauline (Glaser) Stumpf. He grew up with his eight siblings on the family farm. Growing up during the Great Depression, he was taught the value of hard work for the good of his family. At the age of 16, he and his family moved to Bismarck. At the age of 19, he joined the U.S. Army and served in Germany, post World War II. He returned to Bismarck, where he was employed by Gamble Robinson, where he worked for 42 years.
On June 29, 1954, he was united in marriage to Ruth Gartner at St. Mary's Church in Bismarck. Together they raised four daughters, Sandy, Cindy, Bonnie and Lisa. He was intensely proud to have worked his whole life to provide for his family. In retirement, he enjoyed moments spent in the garage, tinkering away at small projects, feeding the birds and watching them in the bird bath, gardening, and time spent with his children, grandchildren and his family's pets. He was anxiously awaiting the arrival of his first great-grandchild.
Surviving family includes his children, Sandy (Jim) Hagen, Wilton, Cindy Stumpf, Bismarck, Bonnie Whitlock, Bismarck, and Lisa (Greg) Schmit, Bismarck; his grandchildren, Kelly Hagen and his fiancee, Annette Martel, Erik (Jessy) Hagen, Erin Hagen and her husband, Dave Sapp, and Shannon Whitlock; his sisters, Hilda Hruby and Ann Hager; and one sister-in-law, Agnes Stumpf.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ruth; three brothers, John, Frank and Gene; and three sisters, Pauline, Rosemary and Eleanor.
