Harry enlisted in US Army on Apr 27 1944 at Fort Benjamin Harrison in Lawrence Indiana. He had 1 year of high school. Enlistment was for the duration of the War.
Fort Benjamin Harrison was closed as part of the 1996 Base Realignment and Closure Commission. The site of the base has since been redeveloped, and includes residential neighborhoods, a golf course, and is the site of Fort Harrison State Park.
Around 1946 or 1947 Harry lost his leg below the knee from an accident at The American Hard Rubber Co.
Harry D. Stone, 69, passed away June 30, 1989.
Mr. Stone was born in Akron Aug. 28, 1919. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and was employed at Morse Controls. He is survived by wife, Mary; children, Gary Stone, Shelia Gardner, Sherry Cable, Evelyn Morrow, Harriet Jeffers, Sylvia Futo, Roger Timms, Harry Timms, Dianna Stalcup and Renee Peele; brother, John;sisters, Margaret Morgan, Florence Wain, Martha Crowley, Patricia Stone; a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Friends may call at the Bacher Funeral Home Sunday, 5 to 9 p.m., where services will be held Monday, 11 a.m. Interment at Holy Cross Cemetery.
