He grew up and attended rural school in the Wishek area. Walter married Alma Meidinger October 3, 1948 at the New Kassel Reformed Church at Zeeland, ND. They farmed and ranched for 50 years raising Hereford cattle before moving into Wishek in December 1999. Walter was a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church. He enjoyed dancing and polka parties and loved to come to the Fair races. Walter was a member of the Wishek Eagles Club and the Wishek Saddle Club. Walter is survived by his wife, Alma, Wishek, one son Terry (Marsha) Rath, Wishek, ND; two daughters, Carmen Haegele, Andover, MN; Robin (Richard) Mjolsness, Beresford, SD; five grandchildren, Juynee (Jerod) David, Tennille Haegele, Chance Haegele, Patrick Rath, Mindy Rath, one great-grandchild, Jace David; two brothers, Wilbert (Tillie) Rath, Wishek, ND; Oscar Rath, Dallas, TX; three sisters, Verna (Cal) Rice, Hutchinson, MN; Judy (Larry) Kilbourn, Shawano, WI; Irene (Harry) Renschler, Bismarck, ND. He was preceded in death by his parents, step-mother and one brother.
