Mary Josephine Hoff
was born March 30, 1933
in Richardton, ND, the daughter of John J. and Florence
(Fleck) Hoff. She grew up on the family farm six miles
south of Richardton where she worked very hard tending
to the sheep and chickens. She attended the country school
before completing her schooling in town. She graduated
from St. Mary?s High School in 1950. On October 24, 1951,
Mary and Joseph Hammerschmidt were united in marriage
at St. Mary?s Catholic Church in Richardton. Together, the
couple made their home in Richardton. It was here where
they raised their nine children and made their home. Mary
helped Joe deliver mail on a route north of Richardton for
over 60 years and enjoyed visiting with her friends along
the mail route. She had a passion for sewing & quilting,
gardening, and baking. Mary was famous for her choke
cherry jelly, butter horns and German chocolate cake. She
enjoyed bowling, reading, going for walks, playing cards,
and completing puzzles. She loved having company and no
one left her home hungry. Mary was the most loving mother
and it lifted her heart any time she was able to spend with
her grandchildren who knew her as ?Mimi.? She also had
a witty sense of humor. She loved keeping up to date with
her family?s activities. In the last year Facebook became
her favorite past-time to keep in touch with her family and
friends. She was a member St. Mary?s Catholic Church in
Richardton. Mary Hammerschmidt loving wife, mother,
grandmother, great-grandmother and sister entered the
gates of heaven during a late afternoon sunset. She was
surrounded by her family as she followed the light to the
place prepared for her by God. Mary passed away Monday,
January 7, 2013 in Dickinson at St. Joseph?s Hospital
