Alvin Schnabel was born on February 7, 1916 in Tripp, South Dakota to John and Pauline (Herr) Schnabel.He attended Baltzer Country School through 6th grade and was confirmed in Bethel Reformed Church by Rev. Kreger.Alvin married Adeline Fastnacht on November 28, 1935 at Tripp Baptist Church.They farmed nine miles northeast of Tripp until 1962, then twelve miles northeast of Tripp until 1966.They retired in 1966 and moved into Tripp where Alvin worked for the Hutchinson County Fair as cop & 4-H watchman from 1954 until 2000, a total of 46 years.He worked for Hutchinson County from 1966 until 1978.He did farm work for Laverle Thiesse and Marvin Frey for many years.He worked for the Tripp Livestock Sales Barn for 13 years and for Tripp Farmer's Lumber for one year.During his retirement, Alvin mowed lawns, raked leaves and tilled gardens for people until 1999.Alvin was a member of Memorial Baptist Church of Parkston for many years and served in the men's group, as a trustee, as a deacon and an usher.Alvin died on Monday, March 24, 2003 at the Tripp Good Samaritan Center at the age of 87 years.
Alvin's memory will be cherished by his daughter, Margean and husband, Paul Binder of Tripp; son-in-law, Marvin Frey of Tripp; seven grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Alvin was preceded in death by his wife, Adeline, on February 5, 2001; his daughter, Arleen, on March 30, 2002; his parents, John and Pauline Schnabel and his stepfather, Jacob Heibel; two sisters, Leontina Lippert and Elda Perman; two brothers, Gus Schnabel and Art Schnabel; one half-sister, Olinda Bitterman; one infant half-brother, Edmond Heibel; two grandsons, Brian Binder in 1983 and Michael Frey in 2002; great-granddaughter, Kristi Bogh and great-grandson, Jason Bogh, both in 1983.
