Gathje will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in St. Charles, with the Rev. James Callahan officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, St. Charles. Mrs. Gathje, 95, a longtime St. Charles resident, died Saturday (Dec. 1, 2007) at Golden Living Center, Whitewater in St. Charles. Frances Mary Wegman was born May 9, 1912, in Janesville, Wis. to John and Mary (Fineran) Wegman. She attended Normal Training near St. Charles and taught in country schools near Chatfield. She married Ralph Gathje on Sept. 28, 1935, in St. Charles. They farmed in Pilot Mound and Chatfield before moving to the St. Charles area to farm in 1942. Mrs. Gathje was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church and its Rosary Society, Altar Guild and St. Rita's Unit. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, as well as reading history and traveling. Survivors include four sons, David (Marlys) of Rochester, Ronald C. (Winnie) of Stewartville, Stephen (Rosie) of St. Charles and Martin (Darlene) of Owatonna; a daughter, Ruth (Maurice) Shea of St. Charles; 30 grandchildren; 66 great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; and a sister, Eleanor of San Gabriel, Calif. She was preceded in death by her husband on Nov. 24, 1983, daughter Audrey, brother Lawrence and sister Anna. Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, and from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church. There will be a Rosary at 4 p.m. Tuesday. Memorials are preferred to the St. Charles Public Library or the St. Charles Borromeo Scholarship Fund. Hoff Funeral Home of St. Charles is assisting the family with arrangements.
