Memorial services for former Ballston resident Emily Thomas of Lake Oswego will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 9, in the chapel of Mary's Woods Care Center in Lake Oswego. Father Berg will officiate.
Interment will take place in St. James Cemetery in McMinnville. Arrangements are under the direction of Macy & Son Funeral Directors.
Mr. Thomas died at the center on Friday, June 2, 2006. She was 84.
Born in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, on July 22, 1921, she was the daughter of John and Frances (Dauenhauer) Vollman. She met her future husband, Marion Thomas, after the family moved to Ballston. They married Oct. 21, 1939, in a double-ring ceremony with her sister, Barbara.
Mrs. Thomas saved money earned picking crops to buy the first refrigerator seen in Ballston. She later worked with her husband in their family business, Marion's Roller Bar.
During their marriage, they moved 22 times - something she often joked about.
Mrs. Thomas was a family-oriented individual who loved visiting relatives and spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She enjoyed cooking, gardening, knitting, cards, bingo and trips to Reno. She refined her canning to an art form.
"Emily will be missed and lovingly remembered," her family said.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Richard of Portland; a daughter, Linda LaPlante of Corvallis; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by brothers Phil and Jacob Vollman and sisters Barbara Ruef and Virginia Fehr.
