C.J. Rapsavage Jr., 83, Bismarck, former publisher of The New Salem Journal, passed away Oct. 9, 2010, at his home after a short illness.
There will be no visitation since cremation has taken place. Committal services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 20.
Mr. Rapsavage was born on Oct. 29, 1926, at Center, the son of C.J. and Gunver Rapsavage. He attended Center School and graduated from high school in June 1944. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on April 26, 1944, and flew in the Berlin Airlift before being discharged in September of 1949.
In June of 1950, he married Minnie Lipp at Center. They had two children, Rocky, born March 9, 1951, and Douglas, born March 6, 1952.
C.J. began his career in the newspaper business following his discharge from the Navy. He worked at The Center Republican, which was owned by his father, until 1956. The family moved to Bowman, where he was employed at the Bowman County Pioneer from 1956 to 1958. He moved back to Center where he published the Center Republican from 1958 to December 1965.
He purchased The New Salem Journal in December, 1965, from Cale Dickey, Jr. and continued to publish The Journal until December 1989. His two sons took over publishing the newspaper when he retired.
Following their retirement, C.J. and Minnie moved to Vancouver, Wash., in January of 1990 and moved to Bismarck in 1992. They lived in Bismarck for seven years before moving back to New Salem.
Minnie passed away on June 29, 1999. Later that year, he moved back to Vancouver where he made his home until returning to Bismarck in 2007, where he made his home until his death.
He is survived by his sons and daughter-in-law, Rocky and Douglas and Barb, New Salem; three grandchildren, Drew (Crista) Rapsavage, Dover, Del., Andy (Jessica) Rapsavage, Schmitt, Germany, and Lindsey (Greg) Locke, Crestview, Fla.; five great grandchildren, Hunter, Kailey, Julian, Averi and Aiden. Three step-granddaughters, Janna (Shane) Tellmann, New Salem, Lindsay (Mitch) Jackson, St. Paul, Minn., and Marnie Sundeen, Fargo; three sisters, Alda Neil, Portland, Ore., Martha Hansen and Helen Temple, Vancouver, Wash.; and numerous nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Minnie, and his parents. (Buehler-Larson Funeral and Cremation Services, Mandan)
