- [S927] Obituary.
Schoren, Joseph Anthony "Joe", 81, of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, passed away on Thursday, March 10, 2016. Joe was born August 19, 1934 in Cleveland, OH to William and Charlotte (Feyock) Schoren. A resident of South Florida since 1952 and a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church.
Joe was a 30+ year employee for the City of Fort Lauderdale spending his days on, or near, Fort Lauderdale beach where he started as a beach boy in 1955. He went on to become a lifeguard and ultimately retired from the pool deck of the International Swimming Hall of Fame where he served as the Manager of the aquatic facility for over 20 years. He spent the remainder of his working years as the owner and operator of Joe Schoren Pools. Those who knew Joe will fondly remember him driving around in his pick-up truck sporting his white shorts, Hawaiian shirt and palm frond hat.
Joe's passion in life was his family. Much of his life was focused on his Special Needs son, Tommy, whom he helped care for in a herculean fashion and tirelessly. He was a friend and member of the Easter Seals camp family on Lake Bloomington in Bloomington, IL where he and his family volunteered many of their summer months. He brought infectious joy and energy to all of the crippled children, in the pool and elsewhere. His son, Tommy, was his pride and joy and he loved to tell stories about how he met his wife from Cleveland, OH on the beach in Fort Lauderdale. Joe loved an intellectual conversation, had a passion for all sports which he passed on to his daughter and granddaughter, and an incredible sense of humor.
He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Felicia Ann "Phyllis" Schoren; son Thomas Joseph "Tommy" Schoren of Sunrise, FL; daughter Sandra "Sandi" Schoren-Testa; granddaughter Alysse Marie Testa both of Ft. Lauderdale; sister Barbara Ann Schoren of Cleveland, OH. Preceded in death by parents; brother William Schoren and sister Camille Cole.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on April 7, 2016 at 11:30am in St. Anthony Catholic Church, 901 NE 2nd St., Ft. Lauderdale 33301. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Alzheimer's Association. www.alz.org
