Sister PETRA DASCHBACH (Age 92)
Sister Petra Daschbach died at 10:47 a.m. on Friday, January 13, 2012 in Mother Theodore Hall, St. Mary-of-the-Woods, Indiana. She was born on July 8, 1919 in Pittsburgh, PA to Albert and Estelle McCloskey Daschbach and was baptized Mary Elizabeth.
Sister entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence on February 1, 1939. She earned a bachelors degree from St. Mary-of-the-Woods College and a masters degree from DePaul University in Latin. Of her 72 years as a Sister of Providence, she ministered in education for 42 years, teaching Latin and Religion at Immaculata Preparatory School in Washington, DC from 1965-86. Hundreds of former students have kept in touch with Sister over the years.
Retiring from teaching, she continued in ministry, including volunteer service at St. Ann Parish in Washington, DC from 1989 to 2008. In February 2010, Sister Petra moved to Lexington, NC, where she dedicated herself to the ministry of prayer and presence in the Parish of Our Lady of the Rosary. In August, 2011, Sister Petra moved to the Motherhouse of the Sisters of Providence, committing herself totally to the ministry of prayer.
Sister is survived by nieces and nephews. The wake and funeral were held on January 18, 2012 at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods. Memorial gifts may be sent to the Sisters of Providence, 1 Sisters of Providence, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, IN 47876.
