Martin Ketterling, 73, Bismarck, passed away Oct. 23, 2016, at St. Theresa Hospital, Wichita, Kan. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, at Calvary United Methodist Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Perry Schnabel officiating. Burial will be held at 4 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen, S.D.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Bismarck Funeral Home and continues one hour prior to the service at the church.
Martin was born May 18, 1943, on a farm near Long Lake, S.D., to George and Karolina (Guthmiller) Ketterling. He attended grade school in several country schools in North Dakota and South Dakota. He then attended two years of high school in Leola, S.D., and then quit to help with the family farm. While attending high school, he met his high school sweetheart, Frances Fuehrer. They married on June 15, 1963, and were married for 52 years.
Martin started his plumbing trade at the age of 19 in Aberdeen, S.D., and worked in that field for 13 years, before moving his family in 1976 to Bismarck. He continued in the pipefitting trade, working for the Plumbers Pipefitters Union Local 300, retiring after 43 years in the trade.
Martin was strong in his Christian faith and always eager to share God’s word with everyone, especially his family and grandkids. His church family was very important to him, where he became involved in working with the kids in AWANAS club, serving on multiple committees, and as church custodian. Through his long illness and suffering, his faith in God never wavered and was strong to the end.
Martin is survived by his five children, Dan (Lori) Ketterling, Northridge, Calif., Dennis (Jenifer) Ketterling, Valencia, Calif., Deb (Ken) Pilon, Bismarck, Denise (Royce) Heick, Wichita, Kan., and Douglas (Amanda) Ketterling, Fargo; 13 grandchildren, Katelyn, Taylor, Madison, Ryan, Jessica, Andrew, Austin, Bryce, Mitchel, Rowan, Paige, Brayden and Colson; and one sister, Emma, Jamestown.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances; his parents, George and Karolina; his infant son, Jonathan; his brothers, George and Ernest; and his sisters, Esther, Clara, Anna and Margaret.
