  Harley and Carol Kirschenmann Date: 2012-02-08 Comments: Perhaps this can be added to the web site: John Kirschenmann was born on December 23, 1879 in Kassel, South Russia to Christian and Philipina (Walz) Kirschenmann. Christian was born on August 15, 1851 and he died June 27, 1928. His wife, Philipina was born May 3, 1852 and she died November 23, 1934. John came to this country with his parents when he was 4 years old. It was a long journey across the ocean and many people got sick and died. They brought whatever belongings they could bring. His mother was able to bring her spinning wheel, from which she made all their clothes. They landed in New York in 1883. From there they traveled to the Menno, SD area and stayed there for 1 year. In 1884 they settled on a farm 2 miles north of Hosmer, SD. They built a sod house there and began working the land. John lived with his parents until he married Christina Kurle on December 16, 1902. Christina was born April 6, 1883. They moved to a farm northwest of Roscoe, SD and in 1906 they bought the Frank Boldt farm 2 ½ miles southeast of Hosmer, SD where they lived and raised their family.
