Jack Walsh was the oldest son of Paul and Ida Walsh and proved good with numbers and skilled with his hands.
Jack was a skilled amateur wrestler growing up. A 1931 Evansville Courier article listed him as the state and city amateur lightweight champion. He may later have been involved as a volunteer in starting the wrestling program at Mater Dei High School in Evansville.
Cousin Betty (Myers) Taft remembers how much Jack's youngest brother Bob thought of him growing up. "Bobby was crazy about Jack,'' she said in 2007. "He just idolized Jack."
Jack worked as a book keeper, loan officer and construction estimator, first at Citizens Bank and later at Morris Plan, National City Bank and Midwest Construction Materials. In the 1930s, his brother Paul was dating Frances Dawson, a Central High classmate. But Jack took a liking to Frances and they became a couple. Jack and Frances were married June 14, 1936 at St. Lucas Church by the Rev. Armin Haeussler. His cousin Betty remembers Jack and Frances coming to Louisville, Ky., on their honeymoon to see her and her mother, Jack's Aunt Margaret, after marrying. "It was such a happy day," Betty Taft said. "They came to visit my family and myself. We were just thrilled to death. They were so in love. It was a fabulous day."
James Phipps, a high school classmate of Jack's, and Edna York stood up for Jack and Frances at the wedding and Jack and Frances did the same for them later when Jim and Edna married. They were all lifelong friends.
In the early 1940s, Jack and Frances moved to San Francisco for a few months. But Jack didn't like northern California because "when you went out at night you always had to have a topcoat on," his brother Paul said years later. With war looming, Jack thought his draft number might come up later in his native Indiana than it would as a newcomer in California. Aside from the San Francisco stint, from 1940-42 Jack and Frances lived in Terre Haute, Ind., with Jack working for Citizens Bank.
In 1943, Frances became pregnant with their first child, but that's about the time Jack was called to service. He was sent to the Pacific, working as an airplane mechanic. When Janet Lynne was born in 1943, Jack got a telegram from Frances' Aunty Lillian Koenig. Jack got home to see his daughter after about six months and finished his service in 1945 with many pictures of his new daughter. Frances wrote every day.
Jack later told a story of visiting cousin Ray Schlusmeyer on Tinian Island in the Pacific. Ray told him something was special about an airplane there because security was so tight. Later, he knew why. The plane was the Enola Gay, which dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan, leading to the end of the war.
Not long after returning from war, a second child was on the way. Cheryl Suzanne was born in 1947. The family lived at 418 Wedeking Ave. in Evansville, but Jack acquired some property up the street and with the help of some friends in construction built a house at 501 Wedeking. The family moved in June 2, 1950, and Jack lived there the rest of his life.
In May of 1953, Jack had his tonsils removed and Janet remembers Frances sneaking in some beer to ease his pain. On Aug. 28, 1961, Jack became a manager at National City Bank after several years working at the Morris Plan. Through his work, Jack knew many people, and on a lark in 1960, he ran as a Democrat for state representative. He didn't campaign but just wanted to see how he'd do. In a field of 12 candidates, Jack received 1,870 votes, well behind the three who advanced to the general election (the top votegetter received 13,599), but ahead of four other competitors.
On June 30, 1969, he started as an estimator for Midwest Construction Materials, apparently his second stint with the company, according to Frances' bible.
Always good with his hands and working with wood, Jack often built things -- from crafts to candelabras -- for St. Lucas Church, where he also served as Church Council president and superintendent of the Sunday School. Ray Baggett worked as a maintenance man at St. Lucas beginning in October 1979, meeting Jack soon after. "He told me if I needed anything just call him," Baggett wrote in October 2009. Soon after, Jack impressed Baggett with his creativity. St. Lucas hosted an annual dumpling dinner and Jack had made platform legs to raise the height of tables so women rolling dumplings wouldn't have to bend over. "For the dinners, he also made little booster chairs for the children to sit on," Baggett wrote. Jack worked with Baggett on numerous projects around the church: "If you asked him to help you with anything or repair anything, his reply would be, ‘Okie-dokie.'"
After retiring from Midwest Construction in January 1975, he spent considerable time in his garage cleaning and reconditioning chain hoists as sort of a subcontractor for Brake Supply Co. He is buried in a mausoleum at Oak Hill Cemetery in Evansville.
