Bio: Veronica "Ronnie" Martin, 89, Portland, died peacefully in her sleep April 11, 2019, at Farmington Square Assisted Care, Tualatin, Oregon.Ronnie was born August 20, 1929 to Adam P. and Beata (Meuchel) Fitterer in Glen Ullin, North Dakota, and was the tenth of thirteen children. She attended school in Glen Ullin and later, as an adult, received her GED. She moved to Portland in 1946 and lived with family where many happy memories of her early days in Portland are still shared at gatherings among family members. Her first employment in Portland was with Montgomery Ward, which is now the historical Montgomery Park building in NW Portland. In 1953 she was hired by Pacific Northwest Bell, working in the Engineering Department. In 1958 she married Patrick L. Martin and stayed home to raise their four daughters in Portland. She later returned to work at Pacific Northwest Bell when her children were in school, this time as a telephone operator on the HOBIS hotel billing switchboard handling calls to and from Portland hotel guests. She enjoyed this work and took great pride in her long career with Ma Bell, until her retirement in 1993. Ronnie loved to garden and has passed along that joy to her children. She was an enthusiastic Trail Blazer fan with an incredible memory of player statistics. She also enjoyed watching PGA Golf on Sunday afternoons. It is hard not to remember Ronnie without seeing her with a book in her hand; an avid reader of history, mystery and biographic works. She also enjoyed playing board games with her children and grandchildren, being a fierce competitor at Scrabble, Yahtzee, and Uno. Ronnie found Christmas to be her favorite holiday and was the center of many fond family traditions and gatherings. Ronnies family was most important to her. Over the years, she joyfully anticipated the arrival of each new grandchild and great-grandchild. She made several trips to Hawaii to visit children and grandchildren. Other travels include a trip to Washington, D.C. where she explored the many museums and historical sites; and before her marriage, a trip to Acapulco, Mexico. Ronnie will be deeply missed by her four daughters, Patrice Kilmartin, St. Helens, OR; Carla (Rex) Butler, Newberg, OR; Joan (Gene) Martin-Flores, La Center, WA; and Suzanne Corrie, West Linn, OR. Her sisters Anna Templeton, Portland, OR; Bertie (Tom) Johnson, Salisbury, MD; and her sister-in-law, Wanda Fitterer, Portland, OR. Grandchildren include: Jonah Kobayashi; Renee (Ralph) Moniz; Ryan (Jennifer) Mobley; Micah (Salina) Machida; Michael (Megann) Corrie; Aaron (Ema) Corrie; Anna Corrie; along with 13 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Veronica was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her sisters, Elizabeth, Lena, and Margaret; brothers, Anton, Pete, Steve, Ralph, Lucas, John and Adolph, and several in-laws.
