Dr. Alden (Al) R. Heupel, 86, passed away October 19, 2015 at Reeds Landing in Springfield, MA. He was born on Dec. 28, 1928, in Ashley, ND to Fred and Christina (Knodel) Heupel. Al graduated from high school in Eureka, SD and entered Sioux Falls University. His college education was interrupted for 2 years with his service in the US Army during the Korean War. Al completed his B.A. in 1955. Al was united in marriage to Marcia Swanson in 1958. That same year, Al earned a M.A. from the University of South Dakota and went on to obtain his M.D. in 1960 from the University of Washington. Al completed a pathology residency and joined a pathology practice in Los Gatos, CA before moving to Watertown, SD in 1968 where he served northeastern SD as a pathologist. Al joined Dakota Clinic in Fargo, ND in 1982 until his retirement due to illness in 1986. Al moved to Madison, WI in 1999 and then to Springfield, MA in 2014. Al had a strong faith and was a member of a church wherever he resided. Al also was an active member of medical and civic organizations. He served on the school board in Watertown, SD for 6 years. Al’s hobby was raising show horses and along with his family, he participated in many horse shows throughout the Midwest. Al also enjoyed fishing, reading and watching westerns. Al was a kind, gentle and loving husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by Marcia, his wife of 57 years; two children, Richard (Kathy) Heupel of Omaha, NE and Lisa (David) Rutherford of Amherst, MA; and three grandchildren, Elizabeth George, Alyson and Evan Rutherford. Al also is survived by two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by three sisters, Erna Hiepel, Irene Stotz and Freda Larson and two brothers Arnold Heupel and Harold Heupel. A Memorial Service will be held SUNDAY Nov. 8, 2015 at 2 PM at the SAMPSON’S CHAPEL OF THE ACRES FUNERAL HOME, 21 TINKHAM RD., SPRINGFIELD, MA
