Richard A. Schortgen, 80, of Bluffton, died at 12:58 p.m. Sunday, July 22, 2007, at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.Born to Alfred and Teresa (Herggenrother) Schortgen on February 7, 1927 in Huntington, Mr. Schortgen married Madlyn L. Van Emon on June 30, 1951 in Montpelier. She preceded him in death on September 19, 1986.Mr. Schortgen served in the U.S. Army in 1945 and 1946. He worked as a truck driver for Habig Co., and was a member of St. Joseph?s Catholic Church. Surviving relatives include six children, William A. (Malia) Schortgen of Poneto; Timothy B. (Paula) Schortgen of Hartford City; Rick S. (Pam) Schortgen of Ossian; Phillip W. (Sharon Dunn) Schortgen of Columbia City; Terri (David) Falk of Ossian and Becky (Kurt) Biberstein of Craigville; three brothers, Herb Schortgen of Albion; Robert Schortgen of Columbia City and Larry Schortgen of Fort Wayne; three sisters, Jane Scher of Huntington, Marge Timbrook of Hicksville, Ohio and Emilie Heeter of Lafayette; and 12 grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph?s Catholic Church with Fr. Allan Fillman officiating. Calling hours will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today at the Goodwin Memorial Chapel and one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at Six Mile Cemetery, with the American Legion in charge of the graveside service. Preferred memorials are to the American Cancer Society.
