Elmer Burkhart Birth: Jan. 13, 1918 Belmont County Ohio, USA Death: Sep. 25, 1966 Bellaire Belmont County Ohio, USA Obit: FIRE TAKES BELLAIRE MAN'S LIFE Elmer Burkhart, 49, died of smoke inhalation Sunday evening, about 8:15 when fire gutted the living room of his home at 2545 Union Street in Bellaire. Burkhart's body was found by firemen near the south wall of the room, and in one hand was clutched a prong from a rabbit ears antenna of a televison set which he evidently grabbed as he fell. The cause of the fire was not determined, said Fire Chief Charles Jewell this morning, but appears to have started in a sofa, located againft a north wall. The sofa, a chair, the television set and other furniture in the room. were destroyed', while walls were blackened and scorched. The heat was so intense that paint in upstairs rooms had peeled, but the fire was confined to the living area. Chief Jewell said that the alarm was telephoned to the Central Station at 8:15 p.m., and when he arrived on the scene within a few minutes, the heat had hurEted the front window and the front door glass, and flames were shooting from both. Chief Jewell got a booster hose onto the blaze through the front window and the flames began to abate. Within moments the First Ward Station truck was on the scene, and firemen had the blaze under control within a short time, preventing its spread to other parts of the home or to the adjoining side of the double house, which is occupied by the Thomas Hoffman family, owner of the building. Burkhart's niece, Miss Phyllis Burkhart, who resided in .the house with. her uncle, was away at the time of the fire, and collapsed on returning and learning of the tragedy. She and Henry Burkhart, 55, of Sand Hill, a brother of the fire victim,. were given emergency treatment for shock at the Bellaire City Hospital. Mrs. Hoffman said she was in the kitehen of her home next door when a sister in law, Mrs. Eugene HQffman, who reside at 2553 Union St., to the north of the Brukhart home, shouted that the house was afire. Mrs. Helen Hoffman Burkhart, wife of Henry, said that she was visiting at the Eugene Hoffman home and the two families were watching television when the air seemed to become very hOot. she said Mrs. Hoffman opened the storm door, and saw the glow of the flames from the Burkhart home next door immediately telephoning the fire department. Dr. W. J. Shepard, Belmont County coroner, ruled late. Sunday night that Burkhart's death was due to aEiphyxia from carbon monoxide, caused by inhalation of smoke.
