Marie Opp
Marie Opp, 93, of the Marian Manor Healthcare Center in Glen Ullin and formerly of Hebron, died Tuesday, May 27, 2003 at the Marian Manor in Glen Ullin. Her funeral service was held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 31 at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Hebron with the Revs. Gabor Tamas and Chris Walstad officiating. Burial was in the Congregational Cemetery in Hebron.
Marie was born December 25, 1910 at Hosmer, SD, the daughter of August and Lydia (Sayler) Ketterling. The family moved to North Dakota in 1910 and settled north of Hebron. She was raised and educated in rural Hebron and helped on the family farm and with the younger children. She moved to Dickinson and worked at St. Joseph?s Hospital prior to her marriage to Simon Opp. They were married October 11, 1932 at Hebron. Following their marriage they farmed in rural Hebron until 1972 when they retired and moved into Hebron where Marie lived until she moved to Glen Ullin in 1996. Simon died in 1981.
She was a life long member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ and a 30 year member of the German Ladies Aid as well as the Guiding Light Society. Marie was well known for her hospitality and was a gracious hostess to all who visited her home. She loved to bake kuchen and cookies and was named the "Cookie Grandma" by her grandchildren and their friends who often stopped by for a treat. Although Marie?s formal education only consisted of grade school, she was self educated and was an avid reader and read two newspapers a day even into her 90s. Marie could also speak two languages fluently, German and English. She is survived by two daughters ? Norma (George) Peterson, Fargo, ND and Mary Ann Unruh Auch, Dickinson, ND; five sons: Allen (Fern), New Salem; Ivan (Linda), Fargo, ND; Duane (Rita), Jim (Carolyn) and David (Brenda) all of Hebron. She also leaves 17 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren; two sisters ? Clara Schatz, Elgin, ND and Ruth Hoerauf, Fargo, ND and two brothers ? Raymond Ketterling, Twin Falls, Idaho and Eugene Ketterling, Loveland, CO. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and two sons-in-law, Clarence Unruh and Ed Auch. Funeral arrangements were by Spangelo Funeral Home.
