Arthur Kitzan, 88, Bismarck, died Feb. 26, 2010, at Medcenter One, Bismarck. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 2, at Bismarck Baptist Church, 22nd Street and Laforest Avenue, Bismarck, with the Revs. Merle Hoots and David Ling officiating. Burial will be in the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery with military honors provided by VFW Post No. 1326.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. Monday at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck, where a prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.
Arthur was born Feb. 28, 1921, in Antelope, the son of Jacob and Katherina (Losing) Kitzan. He grew up and attended school in Antelope. During World War II, Art enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corp. on July 17, 1942. He received a Purple Heart for injuries sustained while serving in the 2nd Marine Division during the battle for Gilbert Island on the island of Siapan. He was honorably discharged on Dec. 13, 1945.
After returning from military duty, he returned home and purchased the family farm near Antelope. Art married Eleanor Oster on April 20, 1951, in Hebron. He and Eleanor operated the farm and Art also worked at the Hebron School as a custodian. In 1982, they moved to Bismarck where they worked as custodians for the Bismarck Public School system. Art retired in 1990 and continued to work on a part-time basis.
Art enjoyed volunteering at the Baptist Home pushing wheelchairs. He loved to invent things and especially cared about his grandchildren and great-grandchild. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Hebron where he served as church secretary and treasurer for many years. He was also a member of the American Legion Post No. 100 in Hebron.
Art is survived by his wife, Eleanor, Bismarck; his sons, Danny (Betty), Hebron, Dwight (Gwen), Nisland, S.D., and Steven (Joy), Hebron; his brothers, Reuben, Missoula, Mont., and Clarence (Agnes), Bowman; his sisters, Edna Mischel and Alma Sailer, both of Bismarck; his grandchildren, Travis (Dena) Kitzan, Michelle (Cory) Hibl, Karen (Travis) Christiansen, Joshua Kitzan, and Mariah Kitzan; and his great-grandchild, Jordan Hibl.
He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers; and two sisters.
