  [S927] Obituary. Clara Nies Ashley, ND ? The funeral service for Clara Nies, 87, of Ashley was held 10:30 am, Monday, October 9, 2006 at Emmanuel United Methodist Church at Ashley. The Rev. Kyle Reinhiller officiated. Burial was in the Ashley City Cemetery. She died October 5, 2006 at Elm Crest Manor at New Salem, ND. Clara Stoecker, daughter of John and Louise (Feichtner) Stoecker was born October 21, 1918 near Lehr, ND. She was raised by her foster parent?s Wilhelm and Rosina Klein in Lehr until she was a sophomore in high school. They then moved to Lodi, California where she graduated from Lodi Union High School with the Class of 1936. Soon after graduation, she and her foster family moved back to Lehr. She was united in marriage to Walter Nies on March 24, 1940 at Lehr, ND. They made their home on his family?s farm. They were general farmers raising small grains and livestock. In the fall of 1947, they moved to Lodi, CA. In the fall of 1948, they returned to the family homestead and resumed farming. In November of 1993, they retired and moved to Ashley. In May of 2003, they moved into Primrose of Bismarck. Her husband died December 9, 2005. She continued to make her home in Bismarck. In the last nine months, she has been in and out of nursing care. Clara enjoyed her vegetable and flower gardens, quilting and crocheting. For relaxation, she read magazines. It was very important to her that all of her children learned to love music. She was a member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women. Survivors include three daughters, Stella (James E.) Merkel of Aberdeen, SD, Connie (Duane) Barden of Mandan and Rosezella (Paul) Hanson of Emerado, ND, four sons, Roger (Gloria) Nies of San Diego, CA, Rayton (Paula) Nies of Sanford, MI, Timothy (Jill) Nies of Grand Forks and Curtis (Wanda Schlabsz) Nies of Ashley, one sister, Lydia Doerre-Scott of Lansing, MI, one sister-in-law, Alice Stoecker of Lansing, MI, 17 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Her parents, foster parents, husband, two sisters, Amelia ?Millie? Doerre and Odelia ?Tillie? Schaible and two brothers, Fred Stoecker and Theodore Stoecker preceded her in death. Honorary Casketbearers were her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Casketbearers were Scott Merkel, Troy Hanson, Brian Barden, Andrew Nies, Paul Nies and Reuben Nies, Jr. The organist was Marcia Davis. Carlsen Funeral Home of Ashley was entrusted with the arrangements.
