Our dad, John P. Hendricks, passed peacefully in his sleep at home, Tuesday, April 13, 2010. He was born October 3, 1919, on the family homestead outside The Dalles, Oregon. He was raised in The Dalles and graduated from St. Mary's Academy.
In 1939, Dad was elected Grand Knight by the Knights of Columbus in The Dalles.
Dad enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942. He was a member of the 9th Special Construction Battalion Seebees and served in the South Pacific. He left the Navy in 1946 and returned to The Dalles.
Following WWII, Dad returned home to The Dalles and became a cherry farmer. He also worked as a bank teller.
Dad learned of farming opportunities through a veteran's program in the Columbia Basin. He was one of 13 veterans whose name was drawn in the Bureau of Reclamation's Homestead Drawing held August 10, 1950. He selected an 80-acre field in block 2 at Burbank, Washington. His twin bother Joe arrived later in 1951 and they started the 2J Ranch.
Dad married Mom (Dorothy Vogel) August 6, 1953, at St. Peter's Catholic Church in The Dalles. Together they raised 5 children; Charles, Beth Dunigan (Paul), Kim Brickey (Ira), Patti Callender (Mark) and Judy Way (Ken).
Dad was a member of St. Patrick's Parish for 60 years and volunteered endlessly at the parish and school. He was a long time member of the St. Vincent DePaul Society. After retiring from farming, Dad volunteered extensively at St. Vincent DePaul's Pasco Food Bank. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, for over 50 years.
Dad was "Grandpa" to Leah, Andrew, Benjamin, Katie, Theresa, Staci, Jacob and Zachary. He was "great Grandpa" to Madison, Jenna, and baby Ira.
Dad was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy; son, Charles; parents Henry and matilda; brothers Henry, Ed, and Joe; and sisters Mary and Barbara.
Dad's wish to pass at home was made possible with the assistance ofo many wonderful people. We would like to thank Drs. James Campbell and Glen Zuroske. We would also like to thank the Veterans Administration Home Based Primary Care staff and the Walla Walla Community Hospice. Last but certainly not least, we thank Dad's care givers; Melanie, Benita, Heather, and Laura. The road was rough at times but working together, we succeeded in fulfilling Dad's wish.
Rosary will be recited on Sunday, April 18, 2010 at 5 p.m. Memorial mass will be Monday, April 19, at 11:00 a.m. Both will be held at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 1320 West Henry Street, Pasco, Washington.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations, in memory of John Hendricks, sent to the St. Vincent DePaul Food Bank, 1120 West Sylvester, Pasco, Washington 99301
