ARTHUR AND PAULINE (BECK) STROBEL

Arthur Albert Strobel was born June 8, 1909 in Eureka, South Dakota to Jacob 
and Marie (Bieber) Strobel. He was baptized and confirmed in the Zion Lutheran 
Church. After he graduated from grade school in Eureka, his parents moved back 
to the farm, which was located four miles north of Eureka. Art married Pauline 
Beck on November 9, 1930. They lived on the farm with his parents. When his 
parents moved to Eureka, they stayed on the farm, eventually buying the farm. 
They were members of the Zion Lutheran Church. Art served on the church council 
for three years, and was president of the council for one year. Art and Pauline 
had five children, all born in McPherson County. Ardella Joan was born 
September 11, 1931, Carol (male), born August 28, 1932, he died four hours 
later, Marcella Mae born October 2, 1937, Mildred born 1938, lived one day, and 
Mary Ann born January 10, 1939, died two days later. 
 
Ardella graduated with a B. S. degree in Medical Technology from the University 
of South Dakota in Vermillion, and is presently employed as Laboratory Manager 
of the Coagulation Laboratory at the University of Minnesota Hospital in 
Minneapolis. She was married to Delmont Bennett September 3, 1953 and is now 
divorced. They had one child, Jaimie Pauline who was born April 11, 1958 in 
Seattle, Washington. She graduated with a B.S. degree in nursing at the 
University of Minnesota, where she is presently employed at the University 
Hospital. 
 
Marcella graduated with a B.S. degree in Home Economics from the University of 
Washington in Seattle, Washington. She married Duane Bruce Lemmon September 15, 
1962 in Eureka. Duane has a Masters Degree in Agriculture from North Dakota 
State University in Fargo. He is currently employed as a Loan Officer by the 
First National Bank in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. They have two children. Marcia 
Jan born July 23, 1963 in Detroit Lakes, graduated with a B. A. degree in 
Mathematics and Physics from Concordia College, Moorhead, Minnesota and is 
presently a graduate student in Engineering at the University of Minnesota. 
Karla Sue was born January 16, 1972 in Detroit Lakes. 
 
Art and Pauline retired from farming in 1969 and moved to Eureka because of 
Art's poor health. He died at the University Hospital in Minneapolis on July 7, 
1978. He had been ill for many years with coronary artery disease. Pauline, 
presently living in Eureka, was born October 7, 1909 in Artas, South Dakota to 
Johannes and Emilie (Fritz) Beck. She was baptized in the Hoffnungstal Lutheran 
Church. At the age of four, she moved with her family to a farm seven miles 
north of Eureka. She was confirmed in the Zion Lutheran Church in Eureka. 
 
Art's grandparents, Johannes and Dorothea (Maier) Strobel, came to the United 
States with their three children; Jacob, John and Fred, on the ship EMS to the 
Port of N.Y. on May 16, 1885 from Gluckstal, Russia. Their daughter, Fredericka 
(Mrs. Johann Ritter), came to the United States in the fall of 1884 with her 
husband and son, John. Johannes was born August 24, 1839 in Gluckstal, Russia 
to Johannes and Anna Maria (Weber) Strobel. He married Dorothea Maier in 
January 1862 in Russia. She was born April 1840 in Hoffnungstal, Russia. They 
homesteaded with their three children four and one-fourth miles north of Eureka. 
Johannes was also a blacksmith. Eventually the three sons farmed within the 
same area, and also purchased several businesses in Eureka known as the Strobel 
Brothers. This included a hotel, store, elevator and a coal company. Eventually 
the brothers divided the business, Fred continuing the coal company, Jacob the 
hotel and grocery store, and John the equipment company which also included 
groceries, etc. John married Katherina Rempfer, and Fred married Karolina 
Bieber. 
 
Jacob Strobel was born January 3, 1871 in Gluckstal, Russia. On February 14, 
1893 he married Barbara Bieber in Eureka. She was born December 29, 1872 in 
Gluckstal, Russia to Johann Jacob and Christina (Ritter) Bieber. Jacob and 
Barbara had six children, the two surviving were Dorothea, married to Jacob 
Balliet, and Martha married to Jacob Hoff. Barbara died May 7, 1903 from 
childbirth complications and pneumonia. Jacob then married her sister, Marie, 
on November 17, 1903. Marie was born on November 16, 1886 in Eureka. From this 
marriage seven children were born, of which five survived. Matilda married Earl 
Thomas, with a second marriage to John Todd; Bertha married Jacob Teske; Arthur 
married Pauline Beck; Walter married Christine Gabriel; and Emma married Arthur 
Hausauer. After Marie died on January 12, 1916 of childbirth complications, 
Jacob married Pauline Karoch on August 30, 1916 at Eureka. She was born June 
18, 1880 in Poland. Pauline had several children from a previous marriage, 
including Adeline (Mrs. Ed. Hausauer) and Elsie (Mrs. Floyd Jones). From her 
marriage to Jacob, one son Elmer was born on June 25, 1919 at Eureka. He 
married Bernice Hall. Pauline died January 18, 1933. Jacob then married his 
fourth wife, Elizabeth Bieber (Mrs. Daniel Jundt), on June 30, 1934. She was a 
cousin to his first two wives. She had a number of children from her first 
marriage. She died June 28, 1952 in Bismarck, North Dakota. Jacob died June 10, 
1939 in Eureka.
