Bio: Anchorage Daily News March 6, 2007Longtime Alaskan James Louis Wise, 75, died March 2, 2007, at home in Anchorage. A visitation was in the Witzleben Family Funeral Home's Bragaw Chapel. A funeral with full military honors was at St. Benedict's Catholic Church in Anchorage. The Rev. Steve Moore and the Rev. Alfred Gebiel were co-celebrates. Pallbearers included Matthew Wise, Ray Benner and 4th Degree Knights of Columbus. Honorary pallbearers were William Wise and John Wise. Mr. Wise was born May 22, 1931, to Charles C. Wise and Elva Minnie Kline in Randolph, Ohio. He graduated from Randolph High School in 1949. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Kent State University in 1953 and a master's degree in meteorology from Florida State University in 1967. Mr. Wise and his family moved to Alaska in 1972. He served in the U.S. Air Force for 22 years, retiring in 1975. While in the Air Force, he served in the United States, England and Vietnam. He was awarded the Bronze Star in 1962, 1st Oak Leaf Cluster in 1966 and 2nd Oak Leaf Cluster in 1972. After retiring from the Air Force he worked for the State of Alaska as state climatologist, retiring in 1989. Mr. Wise was initiated in the Knights of Columbus in 1954. In 1972, he reactivated his membership in Our Lady of the Snows Council 4859. He served one year as treasurer, 15 years as financial secretary, and three years as grand knight. He served two years as faithful navigator of the Archbishop Ryan Assembly and four years as master of the fourth degree for Alaska. Mr. Wise volunteered countless hours to community service projects. He lived for golf and could be found on a course several times a week. He was an avid woodworker, creating numerous pieces for fundraisers and Fur Rondy competitions. He also enjoyed gardening. His family wrote: "James' compassion for others, faith in God and the Catholic Church, and patriotism were an inspiration to his family and friends. During his battle with cancer, we were inspired by his strength, determination and will. We remember growing up tending the gardens with Dad and making family recipes together. His family and community were priorities, and he dedicated himself to them." He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Victoria Wise of Chicago, Gretchen Quinton of Anchorage, Jacqueline and Steve Pearson of Anchorage and Maureen and Ray Benner of Anchorage; son and daughter-in-law, Matthew and Dana Wise of Auburn, Wash.; grandchildren, Reece and Jessica Bushman of Auburn; brothers and sisters-in-law, William and Mary Lou Wise and John and Rita Wise, all of Hartville, Ohio; and companion of 10 years, Anneliese Voegele of Eagle River. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean; sister, Pauline Strahler; brothers, Earl Wise and the Rev. Carl Wise; and twin brother, Joseph Wise.
