AND MARY METTLER Daniel V. and Mary Mettler Daniel V. was born July 24, 1892, the son of Valentine Mettler and Anna Marie nee Hoff. He was the fourth child in a family of eleven children. Valentine Mettler was the first settler in the west end of McPherson County. Daniel V's brothers and sisters were: Fredrich Mettler, Eureka, South Dakota; Magadalena married Henry Roemmich, Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Heinrich Mettler, Eureka, South Dakota; August Mettler, McLaughlin, South Dakota; Bertha married August Heupel, Forbes, North Dakota; Jacob Mettler, Eureka, South Dakota; Edward Mettler, Aberdeen, South Dakota; Ida married John Kirschenmann, Aberdeen, South Dakota; Frieda married Mike Moser, Yakima, Washington; and one brother died in infancy. Mary was born March 20, 1894 in Campbell County. She was the daughter of John Bauer and Katherina nee Wohlgemuth. Her brothers and sisters were: Adam, born 1884, in Russia and died at sea during their voyage to the new land. Christian, born 1886 in Russia, lived in McLaughlin, South Dakota. Rosa, born 1888 in Campbell County married Karl Werner, lived at Carson, North Dakota. Eva, born 1890 in Campbell County married John J. Hieb, lived in Eureka, South Dakota. Mathilda, born 1892 in Campbell County married John Kline, lived at Ashley, North Dakota. Mary also had three half brothers and a sister as follows: Juluis Preszler, Aberdeen, South Dakota; Albert Preszler, Aberdeen, South Dakota; Leah married to Jacob Burrer, Eureka, South Dakota; and Edwin Preszler, Aberdeen, South Dakota. Mary's father (John Bauer) was killed in a freak accident when she was about two years old. This incident forced the mother (Katherina) to give up her children to neighbors in the area. Mary was taken in by the Jacob Rau family. Mary lived with the Rau family until she was fourteen years old. Her mother was remarried to Fredrich Preszler and moved northeast of Eureka. Katherina took all her children to the new home. Daniel V. and Mary Bauer were married November 17, 1914 at the Gluckshal Reformed Church by the Rev. Gustave Zenk. This was a triple wedding. Daniel's brother, August, married Lydia Helfenstine and sister, Magadaline, married Henry Roemmich. The wedding ceremony took place in the forenoon. The wedding celebration lasted all day and the following day. Daniel V. and Mary rented a farm from George G. Neuharth. This farm was located in Section 15 in Odessa Township. Two years later they started their own farm in Section 16 of Odessa Township. They bought a house from Henry Kundert located in Section 5 Odessa Township. The house was moved with horses to its present location and is still standing on the abandoned farm. Daniel V. and Mary had three sons. Melvin, born March 3, 1918; Howard, born February 15, 1925; and Robert, born April 15, 1929. Mary became a victim of the flu in 1918. She survived the flu but lost all her hair from the high fever. Her mother, Katherina, died from the flu and was buried in the Gluckshal Reformed Cemetery. Daniel and Mary had a diversified farm operation. They had fair crops until the dirty thirties. A tornado, on August 1, 1937, destroyed all the buildings on the farm except the house. This building was saved by the Grace of God. Neighbors and friends helped them rebuild most of the buildings that fall. They farmed on their 480 acre farm until 1951 when they moved to Eureka and their son, Robert, took over the farm. They bought the August Job residence. Daniel's hobby was gardening and Mary enjoyed quilting and crocheting. They became residents of the Eureka Lutheran Home in the fall of 1971. Daniel died in the Eureka Hospital on December 13, 1973. Mary continued to live in various nursing homes. She had to have her left leg amputated in 1982. Mary died May 12, 1984 at the Eureka Hospital. They were members of the Eureka Reformed Church and are both buried at the Eureka Cemetery. | Mettler, Daniel Valentine (I52916)

Neuharth, may be related forit is an example of the terrors and thrills experienced by pioneer women in theearly days. When the men were away for lumber, Mrs. Mettler and Mrs. Neuharth stayedtogether in an improvised shelter, constructed of boards, tepee fashion. It wasopen at both ends for the weather was warm. Mrs. Mettler had a small baby, andbefore retiring one evening she had hung some of the traditional baby wardrobeon a line to dry. Waking with a start during the night, she saw the whitegarments waving in the wind. Her overwrought imagination pictured it as in thehands of Indians signaling to another part of their band. She called hercompanion and the two lay quietly, in an agony of fear, lest the next momentthe red skins would enter their shelter and kill them. But soon the light ofdawn came and happily proved their fears entirely unfounded. But, oh, what anight for those two women on the wild prairie. The Mettlers had little or no money when they started their farming operations, relying on their industry and frugality to bring them through. Both industryand frugality were needed, for they did not escape the disappointments of poorcrops and low prices for the products of their farm. A family of twelvechildren were born to the Mettlers, nine of whom survive, namely: Fred V.,Magdalena (Mrs. Henry Roemmich), McLaughlin, S. D.; Henry and Daniel, Eureka;Bertha (Mrs. August Heupel), Forbes, N. D.; Jacob, Edward, and Fred of Eureka;and Ida (Mrs. John Kirschenmann), also of the Eureka community.Valentine Mettler grew to be a successful man in the conduct of his farminginterests and, as a result, was chosen county commissioner, in which positionhe served from 1906 to 1910. He passed away in 1911, but Mrs. Mettler stillresides on the original homestead. | Mettler, Valentin (I52907)
