| 8239 | BURIAL: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nymonroe/cem/holy5e.htm Holy Sepulchre Cemetery is located at 2461 Lake Avenue in Rochester about ½ mile north of Ridge Road. It was begun in September 1871 in order have a common place for Catholics to be buried in Rochester. Before this there were a few small Catholic cemeteries around Rochester. The oldest part of Holy Sepulchre is the lots on the east side of Lake Avenue. These tombstone records include some reburials from the older cemeteries. The earliest book of burials has been filmed. It covers the period of September 18, 1971 to Dec. 31, 1910. A copied of the film has been placed in the Lorette Wilmot Library of Nazareth College (Pittsford, NY). A copy of this film may also be rented from LDS Family History Libraries around the world. Ask for film #1,430,999. These burial records include: date of death, date of interment, place of death, parish, nativity, cause of death, grave location. A few years ago, the office at Holy Sepulchre put their records on a computer, the best part is that you can give them a name and not only can they tell where they are buried but they can also tell you who else is buried in the family lot. Being the only two Catholic families, they travelled to Boonville to church. But soon, they were joined by thirteen other families in an area between Pilot Grove and Boonville, Mo.; later known as Martinsville. In 1870, Daniel Martin donated an acre of land, which is now a part of St. Martin's Cemetery, to be used for a church. A log church was built there by the parishioners and was named St. Martin's after the donor of the land. The church was first a mission of Boonville parrish, and in 1877 became a mission of Clear Creek Church and then a mission of St. Joseph's in Pilot Grove in 1898. The lack of a rectory, plus the poor roads leading to the church site, caused the people of the parish to buy two and a fourth acres from Anton Joseph Wesselman as a site for a new church. The new building was erected at a cost of $12,000, with much of the work of construction being donated. The church was dedicated in 1911. The new location was on the main road between Pilot Grove and Boonville, now Route #135. In April of 1970, due to a shortage of priests and a trend towards consolidating smaller parishes, St. Martin's was discontinued. The building was sold and torn down. St. Martin's Cemetery had its beginning with the burial of Agnes Martin, daughter of Daniel Martin, in 1865. Five years later, this was to become the site of the first St. Martin's Church. With the closing of St. Martin's Church in 1970, the cemetery was incorporated, and the first board members were Leonard Schuster, Leonard Lang, John Gerling, Fred Vollrath, William Lang, John Wesselman, and Eddie Wesselman. The present board: Harold Lammers, pres.; Leonard Schuster, Secy. Joe Twenter, treas.; board members: William Lang and Francis Vollmer. This is a very pretty spot; the cemetery is well cared for.
