| 7453 | BIOGRAPHY: Zeitzeugen berichten ... von dem kalten Winter 1946/47 in unserer Region Geschichte von ?unten? aufgeschrieben von Schülerinnen und Schülern der Hauptschule Bad Bergzabern 1997 Alexandra Pohl Philipp Stengel, geboren am 9.3.1919, wohnhaft - damals wie heute - in Birkenhördt, gab mir Auskunft. Die Schäden, die durch Bomben und Granaten entstanden waren, hatte man bis zum Winter ausgebessert, so daß man gut wohnen konnte. Ein Holzofen war ja in jedem Haus. Das Holz besorgte man sich aus dem angrenzenden Wald. Wasser war ebenfalls vorhanden. Man hatte gleich nach dem Krieg angefangen das Feld, so gut es ging, zu bestellen. Man besorgte sich Saatgut (Korn, Weizen). Auch Kartoffeln wurden gesteckt. Um an Saatgut zu kommen, betrieb man Tauschhandel. Für Holz konnte man vieles bekommen. Man versuchte von den Dingen, die man hatte, zu leben. Aus Weizenmehl wurden Weizenfrikadellen hergestellt. Oder es wurde Weizen gemahlen und daraus eine Suppe gekocht. Wer bei einer Schwarzschlachtung erwischt wurde, bekam eine Zeitlang keine Lebensmittelkarten. Strafbar war auch, im Wald Schlingen auszulegen, um Rehe und Hasen zu fangen. Eine solche Schlinge fand ich einmal im Wald beim Holzholen. Das Reh in der Schlinge hatte sich zu Tode gezappelt. Auch war das Holzholen ein Straftat, doch daran störte sich niemand. Der Pfarrer wurde von der französischen Besatzungsmacht zum Bürgermeister ernannt, weil man davon ausging, daß er kein Nationalsozialist gewesen sei. She was born Dec., 8, 1906, in Cape Girardeau County, the daughter of Alvin and Emma Dambach Reitzel. She married Fritz W. Sandvos Oct. 2, 1952. He died Sept. 4, 1976. She was a member of Emanuel United Church of Christ in Jackson and had worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. for 41 years. She was a member of the Pioneer Club sponsored by the phone company. She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews. She also was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and a sister. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today at McCombs Funeral Home in Jackson. Service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home with the Rev. Sam Roethemeyer officiating. Fornfelt, Jan 29 -- Mrs. Salome Walter Hoffman, widow of John Hoffman died at 8 am today at the home of her son Louie Hoffman, after a week's illness with influenza. She was 75 years old. Funeral services will be held at 9 am Friday at the Catholic Church in Fornfelt with Rev. B S Groner the paster in charge and internment will be in Lightner cemetery in Illmo. Born in Monroe County, Ohio, March 23 1860, Mrs. Hoffman came to Scott County at the age of 7 and lived the remainder of her life in this county. She was first married in 1879 to Charles Hahn at the ceremony in the Luthern Church at Illmo. In 1892 she was married at New Hamburg to John Hoffman, who died four years ago. They resided here for many years. FOUR DAUGHTERS, 8 SONS She is survived by four daughters, three sons, four sisters, two brothers, and a stepson. The daughters are Mrs. Jacob Uhrhan of New Hamburg, Mrs August Ziegler of Fornfelt, Mrs Henry Rahmoeller of St. Louis, and Mrs Clarence Jackson of Illmo. The sons are Louie Hoffman of Fornfelt, John Hoffman of Cape Girardeau, and Wm. Hoffman of St. Louis, and Pete Hoffman of Illmo is a stepson. The sisters are Mrs Frita Sander of Fornfelt, Mrs Martin Roth of Cape Girardeau, Mrs. Chris Goldmacher of Cape Girardeau. The two brothers are George Walter of Ancell and Louis Walter of St. Louis. He served as a Captain Major and retired after 32 years of service to his country. He worked for the Chrysler Corporation in Helena, Arkansas and Dayton, Ohio for 20 years and was a self-employed contractor in Dayton for 20 years, retiring in 1973 and returning to reside in Cape Girardeau. He was born Dec. 14, 1912, in Cape Girardeau, son of Martin and Magdalena Walter Roth. He and Louise Bender were married April 14, 1950, in Cape Girardeau. Walter graduated from Central High School, received A.B. and B.S. degrees from Southeast Missouri State University, and master of science from the University of Iowa. He did additional studies at the University of Iowa, New Mexico University at Las Cruces, and the University of Wyoming at Laramie. He was an actuary with The Equitable in New York City until World War II. He was a math professor at Southeast University 28 years. Walter was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church, member of Trinity Men's Club, Copper Dome Society, American Legion Post 63, and Disabled American Veterans. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1946. Survivors include his wife; a son and daughter-in-law, Martin B. and Betty Roth of Cape Girardeau; a grandson, Christopher Martin Roth; and two stepgrandsons, Brian and Kevin Pingel. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Walter Wilder Roth; and a brother, Martin L. Roth. A graveside service was held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Cape County Memorial Park. The Rev. Douglas C. Breite officiated. Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church or Trinity Lutheran School Building Fund or Southeast Hospice.
