I have a picture of the weatherholts and mannors and it has a listing of a Nellie Weatherholt and a Ellen weatherholt. I know that Nellie is my great grandmother. We are trying to figure out who this ellen is. She is not Nellie's sister. We can account for them in the picture. Also there is listed a Nelson and Harley Weatherholt who are not Nellies Children. | 7256 | BIOGRAPHY: While reading newspapers on microfilm, I came across this article which might be of interest to someone on this list. I am researching a family line of Sarah Nicoll, b. Ohio 3 Mar 1815 in Ohio and died in Moultrie or Cumberland County, Illinois in 1848. She married Michael Ruffner in Fairfield County, Ohio 18 Feb 1836. Michael and Sarah had five daughters, my great grandmother, Sarah M. Ruffner who married Rufus T. Jones 2 Jan 1867 in Effingham county, IL. I know nothing about my ggrandmother, Sarah Nicoll and would be most appreciative if this strikes a cord with someone reading this. Valentine Yahner was born, reared and educated in the Kingdom of Bavaria, in the southern part of Germany. He came, in 1831, to Bellefonte, this State, where he worked for two years at his trade of stone mason, being principally engaged around furnaces. He then removed to the Glen Connell settlement, in what is now Chest township, and purchased a small tract of woodland which he cleared and owned up to 1839. In that year he sold and removed to Elder township, where he purchased a two hundred and forty acre tract, on which was a small clearing and a few improvements. Here he spent the remainder of his life in clearing, farming and improving his land. He was born February 14, 1804, and died April 15, 1859. He was a good citizen, and a member of the Catholic church, and married, at Bellefonte, Christina Chardon, who was of French descent; she was born in Alsace-Lorraine, and died Dec. 26, 1880, aged seventy-eight years. He was born in Germany on Nov. 2, 1824, and in 1852 emigrated to the United States and settled on land three miles north of Hastings. He purchased 128 acres of land and became a prosperous farmer and breeder of heavy draft horses. He was an expert horseman. He died in January 1901. Before coming to America Mr. Able served in the German army and was a member of the Emperor's body guard. He was a member of the Catholic Church, served for many years as a school director in Elder Township, and in politics was a Democrat. He is buried at St. Boniface, Cambria County. His first wife, Elizabeth (Yahner) Abel, died in 1864. He married Magdalena Helbling. He moved to Russia and settled asa colonist in Landau. He was Beresan District Mayor from 1825 to 1834. He was an intelligent, energetic man but was sometimes to strict. Johannes lived to quite an old age; near the end he suffered considerably from rheumatism and gout. source is "The German Colonies In South Russia 1804 to 1904" volume 2 by Conrad Keller BIOGRAPHY: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~merlaan/immel/fh_toc.htm Johannes Christian and his wife, the former Katherina Helbling (a descendant of an old Swiss family which had emigrated to Alsace and then the Rhinepfalz), became some of the first settlers of Landau, in the Beresan region of what is today the Ukraine but at the time was part of Russia. At the time it had 234 men and 236 women. It eventually grew to include a parish school, town hall, the district office and the Beresan University, as well as a post office and bank. All of his six children Nikolaus, Christian, Margaretha, Kaspar, Josef and Elisabeth were born here, as were several generations of his descendants. Before the youngest, Elisabeth, was born, he became chief mayor of the Beresan district, in which capacity he served from 1825 to 1834. (He wasn't the only mayor in the family -- his elder brother, Wendelin, became mayor of the old home town, Erlenbach; other Immels were also mayors of various villages in the Rheinpfalz.) This was more than an honorary function. During his term in office a series of disasters befell Beresan, including illness, cattle disease, grasshoppers, and a famine in 1833. To help his people survive the famine, he sent his son Nikolaus, who was 19, and one Johannes Mosbruker to Poland to purchase cheap grain for food. Described as an intelligent, energetic man but sometimes too strict, he was credited with great prudence in expending the loans advanced from the government and in distributing many gifts from private citizens in Odessa and surrounding towns. He received a gift of 75 rubles in from the Fursorge Committee as a gift for his services in 1830. The 1880 Census is the right one, but them Wrights tended to use their middle names alot. I do believe that the some's name was Charles Frank, the Jennie that is listed as the daughter is really Jeannie Spence(r), the one he married later. As for his place of death, he was living on the second floor at the time of his death. I thank you for the information on on the directory for 1890. Like you, I can't find him in any other census. I guess I would say that maybe in the 91 or 92 state census he was living at 201 Woodlawn as that is where my grandfather was born in Jan of 1893. Thanks again for the help.
