Wright jlw6693@netzero.com In 1870, 20 year old Sebastian Singer lived and worked on his parents' farm in Jefferson Twp., Noble County, Ohio with four of his siblings. In 1880, 30 year old farmer Sebastian Singer lived in Enoch Twp., Noble County, Ohio with his wife Mary Ann (25) and children Philomenia (5), Ablona (4), Isabel (2) and Felix (9 mos.). None of the children were old enough to attend school. Adjacent farms in the census belonged to Casper Schafer and William Merry. Dolores Snider states that the family moved from Noble Co., OH to Monroe Co., OH after 1882. They subsequently moved to Allegheny Co., PA. By the time of the 1900 census, Sebastian Singer (50) and his wife Anna (43) rented a residence at 140 Camp Ave., Braddock, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania where they lived with their children Felix (20), Marie (18), Clemens 16), Catherine (11) and Harry J. (7). The youngest two children attended school. Sebastian was employed as a day laborer. The Singers were one of six families living at that address. Sebastian was known as "Bass." In North Braddock, the local polling place was at the firehouse. On voting day, Bass' friends and relatives would convince him that he needed to announce the opening and closing of the polls. (This, of course, is not the case. There is no such requirement.) "Genealogical and Personal History of Western Pennsylvania" states that John Cornett emigrated from Germany in his youth and settled in Noble Co., OH in 1852. He was a Democrat and a Catholic. In 1860, 25 year old Hessian-born farmer John Cornett (looks like "Cornell") lived in Jefferson Twp., Noble County, Ohio with his wife Barbara and their one year old son John. At the time of the 1870 census, Bavarian born farmer John Cornett (45) had moved to Enoch Twp., Noble County with his wife Barbara (27) and children John (11), George (9), Elizabeth (7), Roseanna (4), and Margaret (1). The two boys attended school. Adjacent farms in the census belonged to George Dyer and John Singer. In 1880, "John Carnott" (48) and his wife Barbara (38) were still living in Enoch Twp. with their children John J. (20), George (18), Mary Elizabeth (16), Rosy E. (14), Margaret (11), Joseph (9), Mary (6), Matilda (4), and Lewis (1). All the children except the youngest three attended school. Neighboring households in the census were those of (John) George Musher and Mary Singer, widow of John Singer. In 1900, 68 year old farmer John Cornett lived on a farm that he owned in Enoch Twp., Noble County, Ohio with three of his unmarried children: Elizabeth (36), Louis (21), and Alexander (18). John was born in Germany and came to America in 1852, when he was about 19 years old. He was a naturalized citizen. John spoke English, but could not read or write.
