| 7013 | BIOGRAPHY: Notes for ALBERT GERARD WEIS: Albert fought in World War II and landed on Normandy Beach. He was among the first waves of soldiers that came ashore. The Germans did not shoot at first because they thought the American troops were just a decoy. However, when some of the soldiers started to scale the cliff, the Germans began firing. Albert and the others ran for cover. Albert found a bulldozer and hid behind the front plate. BIOGRAPHY: Source: Joseph L. | 7015 | BIOGRAPHY: Notes for JOSEPH M. WEIS: Joseph lived his entire life in the house in which he was born (940 Edgewood Avenue in Brighton). He worked for several years as a nurseryman for Chase Brothers Nursery but left the firm to take over the family farm when his father died. [Source: his obituary in a Rochester newspaper] Joseph and his wife Barbara Guck Weis, his sister Margaret K. Weis (Maggie) and her husband John Rodman, and his brother Frank Weis and his wife Margaret Keyes (Maggie) Weis all lived on adjoining farms, each with its own speciality. Joseph's farm was adapted for market garden crops because it had better built-in tile drainage. John's farm was adapted to dairy farming, and Frank's was adapted to field crops such as grains. Joseph was said to be the best sausage maker among the three men, while John was the best carpenter, and Frank considered himself to be the "big operator" of the threesome. | 7028 | BIOGRAPHY: Our Family Tree Entries: 3418 Updated: Sat Aug 25 17:58:19 2001 Contact: Kevin Ellis elliskey@yahoo.com Came to US to be a nun. Had to work to send money back to family in post-WWI Germany. Because of the dire situation in Germany, she was never able to become a nun. When she arrived in the US, she was sent to a TB sanitarium in Colorado, where it was determined that she did not have TB, but pneumonia. She recovered at the sanitarium, then went to Buffalo, where her uncle Benno Hollaritter was working as a Franciscan Monk. She met her husband, Frank Kurch, in night school. She, at the time, still planned on becoming a nun. He "fell in love at first sight" with her. She declined his advances, but he persevered. The story is that he had a car and offered to drive her home, every night, from school. Every night she declined, so he would drive very slowly, talking to her as she walked home. After receiving word from her mother in Germany that the family would continue to need money sent, she gave up her goal of becoming a nun. She decided to accept Frank's continual marriage proposals. One night, as he was driving alongside her, she stopped walking. He noticed this and asked her why she had stopped. She told him that if she was going to be his wife, she should ride in his car. | Dörrzapf, Johanna (I67458)

| 7029 | BIOGRAPHY: Our Family Tree Entries: 3418 Updated: Sat Aug 25 17:58:19 2001 Contact: Kevin Ellis elliskey@yahoo.com He may have been born near Cologne. His mother may have died when young. He was brought up by a Polish stepmother. He adamantly denied being Polish. He was a POW in Russia during WWI.He left Germany under hurried circumstances. Supposedly, fascists in Germany after WWI approached him. They asked him to design a munitions plant that looked like something else, as Germany was demilitarized after WWI. He refused, wanting nothing to do with it. Whether he was threatened because of this refusal is not clear, but he left Germany shortly thereafter. It is said that he was given 50 deutschmarks and a pistol, which he sold, and told to leave Germany. He changed his name in US, supposedly because he was blacklisted by the fascists back in Germany who had some influence in US labor unions. He reportedly was a very fun-loving man prone to mischief. According to one story, his brother-in-law Jacob Doerzaph, who worked at the church, ran a still in the basement of that church. One night, Frank, Jacob, and Leo, a brother of Jacob, were drinking heavily and decided to work with the still, which exploded, doing damage to the church. All three spent a weekend in jail. Frank's wife, Joan, refused to bail them out. | Kurch, Frank Kurek (I67459)

| 7046 | BIOGRAPHY: Peter Breiner was born on August 28, 1832 in Erlenbach and came to the United States with his family when he was about nine years old. He had minimal or no education and never learned to read and write, not even his name (He witnessed his brother, John's marriage with his mark, "X".) There is not any recorded deed in the Sullivan County Clerk's Office to indicate that he owned his own farm. He most likely lived on his sister, Barbara's farm in Obernberg, New York. About 1869 he married Sarah Young who was born in Bavaria. They had one child, Katherine born on November 23, 1870. Katherine Breiner married John Holpp in Brooklyn. | Breiner, Peter (I27863)

| 7047 | BIOGRAPHY: polandgenweb@comcast.net BIOGRAPHY: Sophia Rose Leitsch was born in Allegheny City (now Pittsburgh's Northside) on 23 October 1904. Her parents were Franz Joseph Leitsch and Maria Nüchter (Nuechter). She was likely named after her father's sister, Sophia, who died in 1889. Her nickname was Fafe (rhymes with safe). I always remember her being called Aunt Fafe - never Aunt Sophia. She died in Braddock, PA on 15 August 1976 from cancer (I don't recall what kind but could find out from a cousin). I don't know where she's buried. BIOGRAPHY: Aunt Fafe was one of eight children. You can see a photograph (taken in the early 1920s) of all eight children and their parents here: BIOGRAPHY: http://mywebpages.comcast.net/polandgenweb/leitschpic.html BIOGRAPHY: She and Uncle Clarence had two daughters, Rose Marie and Mary Lee. They were always addressed that way - never as Rose and Mary. I believe that only one of them is still living, but I don't know which one. Our family lost contact with them years ago, and we weren't able to locate them for our Leitsch family reunion in 1998. As far as I know, neither girl ever married. Rose Marie was born 30 December 1945 in Braddock. Mary Lee was born in 1948. These dates were from the memory of Aunt Fafe's older sister and could be wrong. I did find a Mary L Burkhart in the SSDI online, which give a birthdate of 29 December 1944 - it could be Mary Lee. BIOGRAPHY: My mother remembers Aunt Fafe very well, as well as Uncle Clarence. If you're interested in photographs, I can check with my mother to see what photos she has. I'm pretty sure she has a photo of Aunt Fafe and Uncle Clarence, and I know she has a photo of one or both of their daughters. I can also check with some of my mother's cousins to see what photos they may have. BIOGRAPHY: If you don't mind, could you fill me in on Uncle Clarence's birth/death info? I know practically nothing about him. If you have a marriage date for them, I'd be especially grateful. BIOGRAPHY: Best Regards, Marie | Leitsch, Sophia Rose (I141112)
