Waltz and Catharine Hines. He was born on August 27, 1825 in Riedseltz, France and emigrated with his family to the United States on April 19, 1831. The family left France from the port of LeHavre, and first settled in Hollidaysburg, Huntingdon County, PA. (later to become Blair County.) By 1841, the family had permanently moved to the farm they bought in Chest Township, Cambria County. John married Elizabeth Yahner on April 14, 1856 at St. Benedict Catholic Church, Carroltown, PA, Cambria County. The officiating priest was Valentine Felder, and their witnesses were Michael Waltz and Magdalena Gill. Elizabeth was born in Pennsylvania in 1833, the daughter of Martin Yahner and Elizabeth Chardon. Rev. Dennis A. Kastens has published a vast amount of information on this family. Rev. Kasten's mother was a Neuhart and he began researching the name in the early 1950s. At this time, he has published several books covering his research. Much of the material in this book draws from these resources. There is some uncertainty regarding the precise lineage of Valentine Nauert (abt 1574 - 1636). He was possibly the son of Hans Knauwert (abt 1548 - 1608) in Dahn and the grandson of Fredrich Knauwart (abt 1518 - bef 1589) in Dahn. Another possibility is that a N.N. Knauwert resided in Niederschlettenbach and that Valentine was his son, because descendants paid 1644 and 1666 property tax to Bobenthal Authorities. Regardless of the uncertainty of Valentine's ancestors, he is clearly in our ancestral line. It is only his predecessors who are uncertain. Valentine Nauert (abt 1574 - 1636) moved to Nothweiler upon marriage to his first wife, Barbara (? - aft 1609) who was a native of that village. She was likely a member of our Wagner family, as we have discussed above, but that linkage has not yet been made. Valentine Nauert was a subsistence farmer. He also worked as a teamster for the Schoenau iron works and likely drove ox carts from the ore mines to the smelter which had been reactivated in 1592. Valentine had come from a devout home and became a church elder at a young age, filling the term of another elder whose position was vacated by death in 1605. This meant that Valentine served the Nothweiler church for the next 31 years in that capacity. From 1621 until the time of his death in 1636, he was also the village Mayor of Nothweiler. Valentine adopted a nephew, Michael Neuhart into his household by 1609 and served as security for a loan in 1627 which Michael took out as a Rumbach blacksmith. Valentine's first wife, Bargara Wagner (? - aft 1609), was the mother of their son Christoph Neuhart (1599 - 1654). Barbara died sometime after 1609. Valentine married a second time to Margaret (1572)? who also died in1636. The years 1635-1636 saw the return of one of the deadly sieges of bubonic plague that nearly devastated Rumbach population. While we can not be sure, it is likely that both Valentine and his second wife, Margaret, were victims of the plague. | Neuhart, Valentin (I16650)

Nicolaus served about 10 years as a Rumbach church elder (1664 - 1674) which was his station in 1673. It appears that Nicolaus Neuhart died in the autumn of 1674 leaving children ages 5 through 19 at home with the impoverished widow. The couple had 11 children, one of whom was Barbara* Hauswirth (Dec 18, 1644 - bef Aug 22, 1710), our ancestor. Balthasar, his wife Anna Jacky and their family moved to Bad Bergzabern, Germany about 1657. They departed about 5 years later in 1662 back to Saanen. They left behind, in Bad Bergzabern, Benedict and Barbara, who were then about 19 and 18 years old, respectively. However, Barbara eventually went back (about 1674 - 1684) to Saanen, Switzerland.
