| 5516 | BIOGRAPHY: Found an article today that I believe I haven't seen before about the death of my birth mother. She would have been 91 years old today. BIOGRAPHY: In the article, it says that a Missouri Pacific passenger train was westbound when Mrs. Nina Mae [Petree, Moon] Schweickart and children were on the way from Sedalia to the base hospital, where she had a medical appointment. The engine caught the back half of the car and knocked it 75 feet, throwing all three occupants out. [my twin and I were almost three months old and not present]. BIOGRAPHY: The last paragraph was what I didn't know...it says that Eddie cleared Richards-Gebaur yesterday morning on a transfer to Amarillo, Tex., and [this part I had heard] was at the family home in Sedalia when the accident occurred. I was told that he was with me and my twin. BIOGRAPHY: This article was in the March 15, 1959 Jefferson City, MO News and Tribune. I have printed a copy but have yet to get it to save to any file. BIOGRAPHY: I further didn't have any records about the Richards-Gebaur Air Force Base as I had always understood it to be Whiteman Air Force Base hospital. | Petree, Nina Mae (I151117)

| 5526 | BIOGRAPHY: From Janice Huber Stangl (TSTANGLSR@AOL.COM My father, Edward Huber, was born in 1907 near Hosmer, SD. He spent his early childhood north of Leola, SD. He is the son of Jacob J and Magdalena (Hoff) Huber and the grandson of Jacob and Rosina (Ritter) Huber of Glueckstal, Russia and Jacob and Magdalena (Ladner) Hoff of Kassel and Glueckstal, Russia. Today he lives in Bowdle, SD. His first memory of Christmas in the home was a visit from the "Belzmoettl" [spelling?] and "Christkindl". Belzmoettl was outfitted in a big fur coat and hat with a scarf obscuring most of his face. He patted children on the head when he gave them some candy and nuts. Christkindl was disguised by a white bedsheet with a gilded garland around the waist and head. Christkindl also bestowed nuts, fruit and candy on the children. One year my father was safely positioned behind the wood stove trying to keep toasty warm. When Christkindll appeared it startled him, even frightened him! He stuck out his tongue at Christkindl! The Christkindl promptly flicked him on his leg with a lean twig from near the stove. This incident gave him great awe and respect for the Christkindl! When he was older he deduced that the big fur coat was his Dad's bear fur coat. It was several years more before he had identified the household's Christkindl--his mother! It was later, in his adolescence, when there were several younger siblings in the household that they received visits from "Belzneickel" and "Christkindl" at Christmas time. Was this later, "Belzneickel" [St. Nicolas] a product of the growing Americanization of the older generations, or "borrowed" from their German Russian neighbors, who might have had a slightly different Christmas tradition from their village in Russia? One of the Christmas traditions of my father's [Edward Huber] family that continued into my generation, was the preparation and presentation of the Church Christmas program. The event's excitement would start on Thanksgiving weekend, when the children were given their "spreckly" [a poem or bible passage] to memorize for the Christmas Eve event. There was an air of grand excitement as the families gathered at the Church for the program. The tree in the Church [of my father's childhood] was adorned with wax candles that were lit. The sight was breathtaking for the children, since they did not have a tree at home that my father can ever remember. The Church was packed to nearly overflowing. The nearest water pump was about two miles away, but there was never a fire. The Guardian Angels surely were very busy! As the program was being presented, it seemed that the older boys suffered the most. Their faces were flushed and one could see their pant legs shaking from their nervously knocking knees. Once they had recited their "spreckly" there seemed to be a great sigh of relief. Of course, the whole program was in German. The stars of the program were usually the youngest [about 3-4 years old] who had only one or two lines and had no trouble remembering their lines, but may have run off the stage when they were done. After the program was over, every child in the Church received a "seckly" [small sack] from a pile that was under the tree. The sack usually had assorted nuts, candy and a piece of fruit. The tradition of the "seckly" was carried on in our Church until at least the 1960's. When we visited my parent's EUB Church in Bowdle, SD, on Christmas Eve, our own children each received a Christmas "seckly". | 5527 | BIOGRAPHY: From: hebe1@sk.sympatico.ca This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list.Classification: QueryMessage Board URL: BIOGRAPHY: The EWZ files, actual name is Einwanderezentralstelle, which roughly means "people coming to us central station". The applications were filled out by German-Russians when they fled their Russia villages in about 1944, as the German army withdrew from the area. The forms were required to prove that the persons were actually of German descendant in order to receive a German citizenship. As I mentioned many of the applicants were later sent back to Russia at the request of the Russian government. After WW2 the Americans acquired the applications and microfilmed them. The EWZ files are available from the National Archives and Records in Washington. The files are indexed by last name. Some reels have been purchased by German-Russian researchers and have been donated to the German Russian Heritage Society (GRHS). I received my Rastadt - Eberle EWZ files from another researcher. To see what files the GRHS has available go to their website. Go to the Odessa Digital Library, to the Library and do a Full Text Search for Klug under the War Documents. You will find EWZ records for Klugs from Muenchen. I also have a record for heads of households for Muenchen and Rastadt in 1862. A Michael Klug is listed in Muenchen. Could be the son of Philipp Klug from Speier. If this is the Michael Klug born in Speier in 1832, I figure he would be to young to be Katharina Klug's father. You may also want to check out a couple of websites posted by two Beresan reseachers which have both Selingers and Klugs listed in their database. If you wish I will provide you their website addresses. Also for information on the Klug's from Muenchen try the Latter Day Saints website. As you may be aware there are not many records available for the Beresan District, villages of Rastadt and Muenchen. The EWZ records have provided me with much information. Unfortunatley I have not been able to determine by direct Eberle line to the original Eberle settler in Rastadt. All but one of my known Eberle ancestors (great grandfather and siblings) left Russia prior to 1900. Two of my great grandfathers siblings were married to Selingers (a brother and sister). I believe this is another Selinger line though then the one you are researching. | Seelinger, Rosa (I37432)
