| 4183 | BIOGRAPHY: The Olney Connection Entries: 155062 Updated: 2008-08-22 10:35:52 UTC (Fri) Contact: Laverne Edward Olney Home Page: Olney Family & Finance Links Elizabeth Olney Miller (1909 - 2010) | Visit Guest Book November 10, 2010, passed away peacefully in her home at Valley Manor, at age 101. The daughter of Bessie Brainard Olney and William Ray Olney, she was born in Oneida, New York, on January 3, 1909. She moved to Rochester with her family at age 11 where she continued a long and, in her words, a blessed life. She graduated from Smith College in l930. She then obtained a masters degree in early childhood education from the University of Rochester in l932. Bette, as she was always known, taught for the next eight years in a demonstration nursery school developed under a Rockefeller Foundation grant to show the importance of early childhood education. Bette married the great love of her life, Frederick Samuel Miller, Jr., on December 29, l941, just weeks after Pearl Harbor was bombed and the US entered into World War II. Bette and Fritz raised two boys and with them spent many years enjoying weekend outings for hiking, skiing, school activities and periodic large family reunions. With Fritz, Bette was active in the Central Presbyterian Church and later the Downtown United Presbyterian Church. She was a devoted daughter, helping her parents remain in their own home for the rest of their lives. Bette enjoyed entertaining friends and family, using old family recipes for meals served in her small but elegant dining room, notable for its pink décor and candle lit table settings. She found joy in the simple sights of nature right in her backyard and in the sunrises and evening stars she saw from her kitchen window. During Fritz's retirement, the couple travelled widely. In her final years Bette continued to shine as an extroverted hostess, welcoming new residents to the Valley Manor retirement community. Her enthusiasm touched the lives of many people. She credited her long and energetic life to the love within her family, her religious faith, a positive attitude, and the satisfaction of helping others, if only in small ways. She is survived by her son William and his wife Ann of Frederick, MD; son Frederick and his wife Avis of Freeport, Maine; grand children Kimberly Maestas (husband Lee) , Christopher Miller (wife Kelly), Brooke Miller (husband Jeremy Duda), and Mark Miller; five great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased in l949 by her only sibling, William Olney, and in 2002 by Fritz, her husband of 61 years. The family wishes to thank the Valley Manor staff, the Visiting Nurse Service, Mala Gupta, MD, and Beverly Fox-Schantz for their exemplary care. Friends are welcome to attend a memorial service at Valley Manor, 1570 East Avenue, Rochester, on Monday, November 15 at 2:00 PM. There will be a private burial at the Riverside Cemetery. In Bette's remembrance, contributions may be made to the Mary Cariola Children's Center at 1000 Elmwood Ave, Rochester, NY 14620, or another charity selected by the donor. | 4189 | BIOGRAPHY: themooneyfamily Entries: 1616 Updated: 2007-12-17 06:45:09 UTC (Mon) Contact: Michael Mooney themooneyfamily@cheneycable.com Christened Henricus Augustus Barth about 12 May 1861 in Hauenstein, Bavaria in the Palatinate region of Germany according to LDS microfilm records. This was known as the Pfalz Bayern region (Palatinate Bavaria). However, after World War II it is in the Rheinland Pfalz area (Rhineland Palatinate). These records were from Katholische Kirche Hauenstein (BA, Pirmasens) the Kirchenbuch, 1800-1961. They can be found at www.familysearch.org at Batch No. J986582, Date 1795-1875, Source Call No. 0400462 Microfilm. The records show that he was an only child and they list the names of his parents. The Catholic Church used Latin as the official language then, and apparently recorded all names in the Latin format. However, nothing else is known about the parents. German spelling would be Heinrich August Barth with the American being Henry August Barth. Henry Barth (great-grandson) in Brimfield, Illinois has a beer mug from Germany that has the following: Heinrich Barth - Kaiserslautern - 1893 - Andenken. Don't know if this is where he lived or whether this is from a trip back to Germany after moving to US. It is near to Hauenstein. Henry Barth came to the US before 1884. His original bakery was on Lincoln Avenue in Peoria, across from Lincoln Park. The first three sons (Henry and Herman and Julius) all worked in the bakery. There is a story that they would work most of the night and sometimes drink beer while working (they were good Germans). They would occasionally fight (as brothers do) and there are reports of them chasing each other across Lincoln Park in the middle of the night with knives.Henry Barth moved the bakery to Main Street in Peoria below the hill. Henry Barth was apparently very successful as a baker and was active and important in the German-American Society in Peoria. He travelled back to Germany several times (it is reported that he went with the Trefzgers and others).Note Hauenstein is in southwestern Germany about 15 miles from the border with France. It is about 35 miles east of the Germany city of Saarbrucken. Three small towns that are mentioned in Barth records are nearby. Pirmasens is 10 miles west, Zweibrucken is 20 miles west, and Kaiserslautern is 20 miles north. Worked at home as a kid because her mother and father worked in their bakery, and so she didn't finish grade school because she had to stay at home to take care of the youngest child. Lived above the bakery, which was on Lincoln Avenue in Peoria across from Lincoln Park. She would play in the park and take the younger child there to play. Also, there was a library near there where she spent a lot of time. Married at St. Boniface Catholic Church. Drove to church in horse and buggy. Had cousins who lived in Germany. She wrote to them and they referred to their Uncle Henry and Aunt Anna Barth. They lived on a farm in Huberhof, Germany and worked in town in Zweibrucken, Germany. In the letters, the German cousins also referred to other cousins who lived in Otterbach and Lambsheim and Hohenecken, Germany. In the 1950's, she became very ill and the doctors diagnosed cancer. Before going into the hospital for surgery, she made a novena to Saint Therese of the Child Jesus (Therese of Lisieux - The Little Flower - A Doctor of the Catholic Church). When she went for surgery, the doctors were astounded to find no cancer. | Barth, Rose Olive (I113710)
