JOHN JENNER

About to become of military age, Mr. Jenner, along with others, decided to try his fortunes in the much talked of and advertised America. He traveled by ship and train disembarking at Eureka, S. D., arriving in McIntosh County April 23, 1889.

John Jenner was born November 28, 1872 in Bergdorf, South Russia, a son of John and Rosa (nee Hoffman) Jenner and is a member of the Lutheran Church.

After coming to McIntosh County Mr. Jenner worked a year for John Klipfel and three years for George Wiles. These first few years Mr. Jenner says, were among his early hardships and no doubt he considered it quite hard work, trying to plow with an ox team, and not yet 20 years old. He also recalls that the first few years he spent in McIntosh County were very dry and the winters quite severe.

Mr. Jenner was united in marriage to Rosa Bender on April 9, 1895, by Rev. Reinhart, and to them were born nine children; namely, Lydia, (now Mrs. Andrew Schauer) born September 2, 1896, and living on a farm South of Ashley; Philip, born June 25, 1898; Christina (now Mrs. Carl Schauer), born August 15, 1901, living on a farm near Ashley; Emelia, born October 7, 1904; Christian, born July 10, 1906, living near Ashley; Arthur, born December 7, 1908, now operating a filling station at Morris, Minn.; Maria (now Mrs. Jacob Weisz), born April 12, 1910, and living on a farm in McPherson County, S. D.; Fredia, born September 13, 1912, and Walter, born December 18, 1915.

In 1890, Mr. Jenner?s father emigrated to America and settled in McPherson County, S. D., he passed away in 1891, his wife having preceded him in death while still a resident of Russia.

Mr. Jenner after several prosperous years on the farm retired, for a well earned rest and moved to Ashley, where he now makes his home.

The Fred Friedley Home
Added by trae1950 on 8 Feb 2009
Donna Napier was raised by Mr. and Mrs. Carrol Napier, her grandparents. When she married Fred H. Friedley the Napiers gave them part of their farm land on which to build a home.
Fred Friedley built a log house on this property. It had one room on the ground floor and one room attic above. Several years later they built a lean-to on the west side.
The house was built in 1885 or 1886. The Fred Friedley family was the only family that ever lived in the house.
Mr. and Mrs. Friedley moved out in 1946 to live with their daughter and son-in-law, Nora and Otto Kroeschen.
The old house was torn down in 1980 by Larry Lutman, a great-grandson of the Fred Friedley's.
The only two pictures that can be found of the Fred and Donna Friedley home were taken about 25 years after the house had been vacated.

Fred H. Friedley
Added by trae1950 on 8 Feb 2009
Fred H. Friedley married Donna Isabell Napier February 16, 1885 in Morgan County. Except for a few declining years they spent their entire married life on their farm northwest of Versailles. Fred H. Friedley was born in Zion, Pennsylvania April 16, 1863. He came to Missouri at the age of 3, early in 1866, with his parents, Conrad and Philippine Friedley.
Fred and Donna Friedley were the parents of 12 children: William Carrol, Conrad Adam, Gabe Wadestel, Elizabeth Katherine, Ardelia Belle, Oscar Francis, Iva Ruth, Fredrick Charles, Aubrey Neil, Mary Magadalene, Nora Florence, and Norma Ninette.
Carrol married Georgia Moore who died early in their married life. Late in life he married Martha Otten. Carrol worked for the railroad for many years.
Conrad Adam, better known as Coon Friedley, married Audra Arnold August 1913. Other than eight years spent in Colorado, their entire married life was spent on a farm near Versailles. Conrad A Friedley bought the Fred H. Friedley farm after his father's death, spending his retirement there and passed away on the farm where he was born. Conrad and Audra Freidley had six children: Albert Nelson, Ralph, Ada Clorene, Hazel Lucille, Ina Burton, and Eugene Francis.
Gabe Wadestel passed away early in life.
Elizabeth Katherine married Oliver P. Huffman March 15, 1918. They were parents of nine sons: Cecil Oliver, Norman Cleo, Fredrick Thomas, Paul Gregory, Aubrey Lester, Donald Marion, Wade Wood, Ervin Earl, and Vencil Nine. Elizabeth Katherine and her husband also raised their family on a farm near Versailles.
Ardelia Belle married Claud Pippen. After the death of her husband she moved from Miami, Oklahoma and returned to Morgan County.
Oscar Francis married Opal Palmes and they too have spent their life on a farm in Morgan County. They are the parents of 10 children: Raymond, Aubrey, William, Elroy, Paul Fredrick, Norma Jean, Donna, Shirley, and twin boys Donald and Derald.
Iva Ruth married three times. Her first husband was Ezra Self, second was Phil Sappington, and the third was Guy Grider.
Fredrick Charles married Dorothy Wetherill and they are the parents of five children: Charles David, Fred Harvey, Barbara Belle, Hannah Kay, and Carrol Owen.
Aubrey Neil lived just a few years.
Mary Magdalene lived one month and one day.
Nora Florence married Otto Kroeschen. Otto was a farmer and after retiring they moved to Stover, Missouri where Nora was a beautician and owned her own shop.
Norma Ninette lived four years, eleven months, and 24 days.
Fred H. Friedley passed away April 5, 1950. His wife Donna preceded him in death on April 21, 1949 at the home of their daughter, Nora Kroeschen. Fred H. and Donna Friedley and six of their children are at rest in Mt. Nebo Cemetary not far from the graves of his parents, Conrad and Philippine Friedley.

Eva Elizabeth; the eldest daughter of the Bintzes, was called ?Avlis? by her family. It should like a contraction of Eva & Eliz. Avlis married Philipp Kuntz in Germany. Likely in Nothweiler, since that was where her parents lived. Philipp was a small man, about 5?4?? tall. In contrast Avlis was quite tall, & in later years quite heavy. Philipp worked as a forester for the German government, marking trees to be cut. They lived in the village of Nothweiler where their 6 oldest children were born: Henry, Alice, Carolina, Philipp, Fred & Louis. The younger Philipp, who is now living in Woodland, CA, can recall many things about their home in Germany, & many things that happened there. He recalled vividly the little gnarled fellow that used to play his accordion on the streets. As an added attraction for tourists he would go up on a high pinnacle on a nearby mountain near a castle & stand on his head on a projecting ledge. I?m sure this brought him a few extra coins. The townspeople called him the ?Oma Yokel?.

In 1892 the Kuntz family immigrated to the United States. All of Avlis?s brothers, sisters & her parents had left Germany between 1880 & 1886, & by this time were all living in Minnesota with the exception of Louise & her husband, John Jordy, who had not yet moved from Chinoa. Philipp worked in a lumberyard at Clara City for awhile, but eventually they settled on a farm 12 miles north of that village. Their 2 youngest children, Charley & Louise were born in Minnesota.

On September 6, 1901 (the day President McKinley was shot) Alice & Henry left for Donnybrook to file on homesteads; they were the first of their family to make the move to North Dakota. The others likely came shortly afterward. Philipp Kuntz Sr. filed on a quarter section of land, as did Carolina who was 19 years old at that time. It was required that homesteaders live on the land at least 6 months out of the year & at the end of 5 years they could prove up & get title to the land. It would seem that these young girls must have been made of pretty sturdy stuff to live alone in their homestead shacks. Homesteaders usually tried to build their houses as close as they could to one another, often just across the road or quarter line. I have tried to locate these homestead houses in the approximately the right places on my map.

The older children in the family were married during the period that the Kuntzes lived near Donnybrook. Philipp Jr. married Annie Lubitz from Balfour, ND & Henry also married a Balfour girl, Bertha Bethke. Carolina married Frank Horman who farmed near Balfour. Probably they got acquainted through church activities because at that time the span of acquaintances was a radius of about 5 miles. Horses & buggies were not
Conducive to long-distance traveling. (Balfour is about 85 miles from Donnybrook.) Alice married Henry Franke, a carpenter. Fred & Louis, who homesteaded at Shaeffer, ND, married girls from that area.

A very bad tragedy occurred in the Kuntz family in 1915 with the death of Henry Kuntz who died suddenly of a brain hemorrhage. This left his wife with 3 small children to raise. She went back to Balfour to live near her own folks, & after a few years sold their homestead quarter at Donnybrook.

Louise was only 15 years old when her mother died of cancer & Louise had to take over the housekeeping for her father & brother Charley. Mrs. Philipp (Eva Elizabeth) Kuntz is buried in the Donnybrook Cemetery.

Eventually all of the Philipp Kuntz families went to California, except Henry?s family. Father Philipp & Louise moved there in 1919. She later married Roger (Scotty) Martin & lived on a farm near Patterson. Alice & Carolina settled in or near Patterson when they moved to California, & Mr. Kuntz lived with his daughters in his old age. His grave is in the Patterson Cemetery. Carolina & Louise?s families are still living in that area. Charley Kuntz married Lydia Witte & they lived in Anaheim where he worked for the city street maintenance department.

The only one of the Philipp Kuntz Sr. that is still living is Philipp who lives in Woodland, CA. His 4 sons are also in that part of CA as are the sons & daughters of Louise Kuntz.

At the time of the 1920 census, Ernest Singer (28) rented a home at 1537 Dublin Ave, in Canton with his wife Lula (27) and daughters Miriam (2) and Doris (1). Ernest worked as a roller in a steel mill. Two doors away in the census was the household of fellow Fulda-descendant George Brahler.

In 1930, 38 year old Ernest M. Singer owned a home worth $7000 at Bellflower Ave. SW in the 9th Ward of Canton, Stark County, Ohio. Living with him were his wife Lula (37), and children Miriam (13), Doris (11), Robert (8), Jean (6), and Ernest's unmarried aunt Lena Singer (39).(Lena was the half-sister of Ignatius Singer; the youngest child of their father Jacob Singer Jr.) Miriam, Doris, and Robert attended school. The Singer family owned a radio set. Ernest was employed as a roller in a steel mill. Ernest was not a veteran.

Emigated to the United States in 1849. Lived in Pittsburgh, PA at the corner of Chestnut and Ohio Streets (Dutch Town Section of Pittsburgh) before moving to Ohio. Franz wanted to move west as he did not like to work in the mills of Pittsburgh. On November 12, 1853 Franz and Margareth Muth bought a farm of 40 acres from Nathan and Elsa Hollister for $250. This farm was located on Rado Ridge, Stock Township in Nobel County, Ohio. This property was very near the farm of Jacob and Magdalene Singer. Franz and Margareth sold this farm to Peter Noll in 1869 for $400. This farm is near Fulda, Ohio. This is an interesting point because Langenlieber, Germany is a few miles east of Fulda, Germany. Most of the German people living in and near Fulda, Ohio, were supposed to have come from the area around Fulda, Germany. We know for a fact that Franz Muth was one of these early settlers. On April 20, 1869, Franz and Margareth bought a farm of 80 acres from Barbara Macy, William Smithberger and J. Rease for the price of $1700. In 1872 Franz Muth bought 106 acres adjacent to the farm on Pawpaw Creek from a Lyman Wood for the sum of $2500. Recorded in Volume 19, page 302, Noble County records, Caldwell, Ohio. In 1886 Franz Muth bought an additional 40 acres from Valentine Baker for the sum of $650. This would have made the farm 226 acres

Kaspar's first wife came from Germany and arrived in Pittsburg at the same time as the great flood of Johnstown (May 31, 1889) Kaspar worked at Faust Bakery in Pittsburgh, Pa. He lived on Ohio Street. In 1906 he bought a store in McKeesport, Pa. and his wife Melani was going to operate it. She died. Kaspar asked Anton Joseph Muth to send his daughter Louvina and son Riendhart Anton to help him. Riendhart ran the store for a year until he sold out. He then returned to Marietta, Ohio. Louvina stayed in Pittsburgh. Kaspar is buried in St. Mary's Cemetery, Mt. Troy, Pittsburgh, Pa. He and his family attended Holy Name Church, Trot Hill, Pittsburgh, Pa. Kaspar Muth did not like farming. His father Franz Muth wanted him to stay and work on the farm at Noble County on Pawpaw Creek. Kaspar refused and moved to Pittsburgh where he spent the rest of his life. Franz sold 80 acres of his farm to his son Anton Joseph and Franz lived on the remainder until he got too ld to work. He then sold his other part to his other son Jacob Adam Muth. Then he went to live with his daughter at Burkhart, Ohio. When Kaspar Muth would visit the farm he would spend the time at Anton's house and would not visit his father and mother due to this difference on farm versus city work.

Records conflict on year of birth:
1) Social Security Death index states 1904.
2) Younger brother Ed Schweinberg says 1904
3) Headstone says 1905.

Cyril was quiet and introspective, in counterpoint to his brother's gregarious nature. As a young man, Cyril was involved with a woman named Mabel Spangler. His brother Ed remembers that Mabel was a very attractive girl who had won a prize in a beauty contest. Cyril and Mabel wanted to get married, but several family members -- notably Aunt Dora Schweinberg Heil -- strongly disapproved because Mabel wasn't Catholic. Cyril and Mabel broke up. Cyril never married.

Cyril suffered a stroke in his 50s, and walked with a cane. He lived with his mother until his death.

Charles Muth served in the Army during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. He attained the rank of Lt. Colonel in the Airborne Infantry. He was also president of SEP, Inc. in Huntington, WV.

Charles was given a crystal bowl in Feb 1970 by his cousin Lena Singer Long. The bowl had been a wedding present given to Anton and Lena (Singer) Muth in 1883. (Anton and Lena Muth are Charles Muth's grandparents.) Lena Singer Muth gave the bowl to her niece Lena Singer Long in 1936. She in turn gaven the bown to Charles Muth.

Charles Austin Muth, together with Irene Fox, compiled "The Singer Family History" in 1970. He traveled to old farms and homesteads throughout West Virginia and southeastern Ohio. He visited relatives to gather as much information as possible to make the book accurate and interesting. He went to many churches in the area to examine original records, and he corresponded with friends in Germany to research records there.

From Muth & Fox::
Anton Joseph Muth's baptismal sponsors were Anthony and Mary Kress.

The marriage license for Anton Muth and Helena Singer was paid for by Helena's brother John Singer. This is recorded at the Noble Co. Courthouse, Vol. 6, pg 140. Anton and Helena were married at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Fulda, Noble Co., Ohio by Father D.J. Kluber. Witnesses were Anton Kress and Sebastian Singer.

After their marriage, Anton and Helena lived with her parents in Fulda while they saved their money for a farm of their own. With the money Anton earned and the dowry given to Helena by her father, the couple bought a farm on Pawpaw Creek (Elk Twp., Noble Co.) two years later on 3 Apr 1883 from Anton's parents. They paid $1500 for the 76 acre farm. (Vol. 29, pg 254, Noble County records)

The Muth's oldest child, Francis, was born before they purchased the farm. Their remaining five children were all born on the farm on Pawpaw Creek. They joined the old St. Henry's Church in Harriettsville and raised their six children. In the 1890s, Anton Muth and his brother John were two of the men who used their teams to haul stone for the construction of the new St. Henry's Church in Harriettsville. They did this whenever they could for two years. Andy and Lana were baptismal sponsors of Anthony Joseph Singer born 17 Jun 1896, near Harriettsville.

The children attended the one-room schoolhouse at District No. 2, Elk Twp., Noble County, Ohio. The schoolhouse was located on Pawpaw Creek between the John Adam Muth farm and Anton Muth's farm. The schoolteacher was Ed Smithberger. Charles A. Muth, a grandson of Anton, still had the doorknob from the schoolhouse door in 1970.

The Muths lived on the farm on Pawpaw Creek until 28 March 1901. Anton and Helena Muth sold their 76 acre farm to A.G. Parks for $1475 --- $25 less than they had paid for it seventeen years earlier. (Vol. 29, pg 61, Noble Co. records) Andy and Lena auctioned off their farm equipment and animals and made $3000 from the sale. With their neighbors, they stayed up all night to guard the money. The next day, they left for Marietta. They took two days to make the trip; staying the night in their wagon on a covered bridge because of a rainstorm. In Marietta, they bought a home at 730 Seventh St. Andy went to work at the Marietta Chair Factory, which is now part of Marietta College.
