| 3424 | BIOGRAPHY: Joseph Kinnaman was born 3 February 1848 less than a mile north of Odon in Daviess County, Indiana. On 30 September 1883 in Odon, he married Ruth P. McCoy (born c. 1857 in Daviess County), a daughter of Hugh McCoy and (possibly) Eliza J. (?). Joseph and Ruth had two children, Omie (1885), and Porter.Joseph, perhaps, organized the Methodist Episcopal Church at Elnora, Indiana, and was, perhaps, the first school trustee of the Odon School Board incorporated in 1885. In February 1895, Joseph did leave the farm and enter the hardware business with George D. Abraham in Odon. After a year he began a furniture store in Odon with a Mr. Burrell, the firm being "Kinnaman and Burrell". Joseph was a Republican, and in 1883 was a delegate to the Republican County Convention. He was also a Mason, master of his lodge in Odon, and was a delegate to the State Grand Lodge Session in 1881. In addition Joseph was a constable of Madison Township. Joseph died 21 November 1936. There is a Joseph Kinnaman buried, with Ruth P., in Walnut Hill Cemetery, but this Joseph was born, according to his marker, on 9 February 1846. | Kinnaman, Joseph A. (I62636)

I have a Frank Resch (b.26 Dec 1878 in Germany; parents unknown) who married a Christina "Clara" Gaerthoefner (b.5 May 1887 nr.St.Nazianz, Manitowoc Co) at St.Nazianz or in Sheboygan, WI) around 1905. Im related to the Gaerthoefner's. Frank and Clara had at least 11 children including a son Joseph (grdson of your Joseph?). I believe the family settled for a time around Two Rivers, Manitowoc Co, WI although both Frank and Clara may have died in Sheboygan. Do these folks connect with yours? If so, I would like to talk to you further. Also, I have a Teresa Resch marrying a John Drews in Sheboygan in 1918 (unknown connection) and Barbara Resch marrying a Michael Seckinger in Niederkirchen, Deidesheim, Rheinpfalz, Bavaria in 1855. I have no idea if Barbara connects to any of these other Resch's. Does any of this sound familiar? Hope to hear from you. Tom Lutz | Gaerthoeffner, Clara Christina (I2967)

My grandfather was Joseph Garthaffner and he had a brother named Frank. Any more info on this family that you may have I would appreciate, I can give you some in return. Hope to hear from you soon!!! From Jean Schwonek on 20 Feb 2017: Grandpa was born on Feb. 12 - Lincoln's birthday. There were always visitors coming to see Grandma and Grandpa - relatives, people that were actually 'friends' but I grew up thinking they were relatives because they were treated no less than the family that visited. Two of Grandpa's daughters never married and continued living with them so one of his 'escapes' from all the women in the house was to go into the basement for a cigar or pipe - he had a chair and his pipe stand on a small table in the furnace room - that was 'Grandpa's area' - which we always treated with respect. One of the 'additional' conditions on his death certificate (not cause of death) was blindness and I suspect it was macular degeneration - I'm not sure that was readily diagnosed as such in the '70's. Because of his vision issues his last few years of life he became an AVID radio listener. I remember telling him when I got contacs and thought I'd then have to explain what contacs were - first thing he said was "those are expensive" - his mind was sharp as a tack until the end. He listened to baseball games on the radio (which is were I attribute my love of baseball originated). When we were growing up the only time I remember Grandpa having 'custody' of the T.V. was Friday nights - for the Friday night boxing fights! He was a long-time employee of the Kohler Company (retiring from there) and had the misfortune of being an employee during the famous "strike" that went on for years. At that time as no money was coming into the home, my eldest aunt, Angie, left school and started working and according to my Mom, turned over her entire paycheck to her parents so they had money to live; they also lived in an upper duplex in Sheboygan that his sister & brother-in-law owned during those tough years. His son changed the spelling of the last name (for his subsequent family) to Gaerthofner. Grandpa's uncle (Michael's older brother) who moved back to New York and raised his family in NYC used the spelling Garthoffner. The 'ae' and 'oe' are a challenge because of the umlaut issue - do you use 'a umlaut' , 'e umlaut' ? I have done so many 'searches' over the years with all the variations (not using the 'e's, making the 'f' an 'ff', using one of the 'e's but not the other (Ex. ae, but only 'o', or only 'a', but oe, exchanging 'a' for 'e' and vice versa. There is a Gaerthoefner 'clan' in the Ohio area and as the name is so unusual I'm sure there is a connection but to date I haven't found one. I found a Garthoffner on the NYC census (1850's - don't have the info available at the moment - may have been one of their 'state' census years) so my 'theory' is that Grandpa's grandfather (Michael's father, Franz Joseph) briefly stayed in NYC because there was a relative, I think I have the marriage record of Franz and his first wife in Germany (John and Michael's father). The 'story' was that the wife died on the voyage to the U.S. (Forgive me, I'm doing all this from memory) I believe the 2nd wife was the mother to Michael's younger brother (Joseph) who I never knew existed until I questioned my aunt when I found him in Wisconsin in directories, etc.! and ALWAYS known as Joe Gaerthoefner, Uncle Joe, etc His children called him Pop. His firstborn great-grandson was named Joe after him and he was so flattered by that honor | Gaerthoefner, Joseph Frank (I2665)

Issue - Thursday, December 24, 1942 - Page 1, Column 4 Mrs. Katherine Kaltenbrunn, aged 90, oldest member of the St. Gregory parish of St. Nazianz, passed away at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Christel, a mile east of St. Nazianz on Sunday morning at 2 o'clock. She had been ill for some time. Mrs. Kaltenbrunn, nee Katherine Riesterer, was born April 18, 1852, in Baden, Germany, and in 1871 came to America, direct to St. Nazianz. In September, 1874, she was married to Louis Kaltenbrunn at St. Nazianz, by the late Rev. P.A. Mutz. After their marriage they bought the farm now occupied by Louis Adelman, where they lived until 1912 when they retired, making their home in the village of St. Nazianz. Fourteen children were born to the couple, four of whom died in infancy, and a daughter, Mrs. Anton Schleh died May 31, 1925. Her husband also preceded her in death in January, 1924. Survivors are five daughters, Mrs. Albert Christel of Valders R.1, Mrs. John Michels and Mrs. Joseph Gaerthoeffner of Sheboygan, Mrs. William Wollersheim of Kiel R. 2, and Mrs. Anton Eberle of Valders R. 1; four sons, Anton of Random Lake, Joseph and Louis of West Allis and Peter of Oakwood; 50 grandchildren, 70 great-grandchildren, and one great, great-grandchild. Funeral services were held this Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock at St. Gregory's church and burial was made in the adjoining church cemetery. The Rev. Fintan Holzknecht officiated. Postnote: This is the obituary of my great-grandmother. I have researched the church records and she was married to her husband in August of 1875, not September of 1874 as the obituary states. Her husband was also known as Ludwig. Submitter: Jean Subject: Viktor Kaltenbrunn's ship Message: Cheryl: You have MADE my day! I am so excited to get some information on the ship/immigration date, etc. Thank you! What is the CD? Does you have any details on a name of a town in Baden they immigrated from? Is the Schwoerer related to the man Christine married? (Viktor's daughter from his second wife Eva?) Did you find Eva's immigration? Supposedly she was from Baden too - Geigel I think was her maiden name. Viktor may have had a sister - a found a Katherina Kaltenbrunen who died in the convent - not sure if she was a nun or just lived there as she was single. Because the name is so familiar I thought there might be a connection. Viktor's first wife's maiden name was Catherine Stoll - any other Stoll's? What about a Math. Wollersheim or Anton Schleh? One of Math. sons and Anton married a granddaughter of Viktor's. Could you check some other names? Katherine Riesterer (Viktor's daughter- in-law, Maurus Riesterer (may have been an uncle of hers - apparently she did not come over with her parents. Felix Pfefferle (his son was a witness at [Viktor's son] Ludwig's marriage, Frank/Franz Schwab - his grandson married one of Viktor's granddaughters, Franz Joseph Garthoffner/Garthaffner/Gothofner/Gaerthoeffner (multiple spellings)- his grandson married one of Viktor's granddaughters. I would so appreciate any info you might find and pass along. Have you looked for an actual ship's passenger list yet? Don't forget to give me info on the CD - I might need to order one of those. Thanks again. Can I do anything to help you? How are you related to Viktor? I have quite a bit of info on the children from his second family and would be happy to pass that along or mail you copies.
