CHRIST AND ERNESTINA DAIS

Christ Dais was born January 20, 1901 to George and Christina (Gohl) Dais. He
has eight brothers and sisters, Jacob, Katherine, John, George, David, Martha,

George and Christina moved from Glucksthal, South Russia in 1889, and, within a
month, they arrived in Eureka. During the spring they stayed with George's
brother-in-law, Jacob Gable. He then claimed 160 acres from the government, put
up a building which served as both house and barn under one roof (made of sod),
and seeded 15 acres of flax. They were hailed out.

In the fall of 1894, George went to Wells County, North Dakota where he worked
with a threshing crew for $1.00 a

day. He earned $28.00 to take home. At the time, Christina was at home with
three children. While George was gone, she ran out of food. She walked three
miles to Jacob Bieber's and traded a Russian veil in exchange for a little food
to last until George came home.

Shortly afterward George homesteaded his place. He bought two oxen and a hand
plow. It was not easy to work with oxen. George had to walk behind them, and
when they got hungry, they just went home, no matter what time it was.

In 1919, George and Christina moved to a farm five miles north of Eureka. In
1923, they moved to Eureka. George died in 1926 and Christina died in 1949.

13 children were Katherine, Henry, Ernestina, August, Anton, Martha, Adam,
Gideon, Pauline, Theodore, Alma, Jacob and Sarah.

Ernestina and Christ farmed five miles north of Eureka on the family place.

Edmund was married to Gladys Stoeker. They had one daughter, Lanette. Lanette
married Edward Motes and lives in Florida with their children, David and Buffy.
Edmund died March 3, 1978.

Edwin married Hulda Werth from Lehr, North Dakota. They have two children, Judy
and Jerry. Judy married Leroy Kolb. They have four children. Jerry married
Karen Kurle. They have three daughters.

Edwin and Christ farmed about 1500 acres, and, at the same time, went into
carpentry and building. In 1948, Edwin and Hulda moved to the farm, and
Ernestina and Christ moved to town where they built their first house. Edwin
and Jerry farmed the land from 1966 until 1984. At that time, Jerry took over.

Late in the fall of 1954, Ernestina and Christ sold their first home and built
the house that Christ lives in today. They had a big garden and beautiful
flowers that Ernestina took care of while Christ did carpenter work.

EDMUND OPP Edmund Opp was born February 27, 1920, in McPherson County, Eureka, South Dakota. He was the son of John D. and Elizabeth Opp. Edmund grew up on a farm with six brothers and five sisters. The elder Opp's started farming in 1900 and retired to Eureka in 1944 where they spent their remaining years. John passed away in 1954 and his wife Elizabeth died in 1969. Hulda and Edmund Edmund and Hulda Retzer, Ashley, North Dakota, were married on August 29, 1943. It was customary in those days that the youngest son take over the family farm. Horse drawn machinery, six horses and a few cows was considered sufficient property to begin farm life. The latter 1940's became more profitable due to better crops and prices, so they were able to purchase a John Deere tractor, plow and pony drill. ERWIN AND VIOLA KURLE

Erwin and Viola Kurle

Erwin Kurle was born in McIntosh County near Venturia, North Dakota on
December 18, 1916. His parents were Rudolph Kurle (born at Eureka, South
Dakota on May 27, 1894; died May 22, 1971) and Emelia Pfeiffer (born at
Ashley, North Dakota on September 23, 1896; died February 5, 1972). Erwin
was one of six children, and he attended rural school Rosenthal No. 3. He
worked with his parents on the family farm before his marriage to Viola Opp
on December 10, 1939.

Viola Opp was born in Campbell County, seven and one-half miles southwest
of Eureka, South Dakota on July 27, 1920. Her parents were Philip G. Opp
(born at Eureka, South Dakota on September 30, 1892; died October 11, 1940)
and Mary Job (born at Hosmer, South Dakota on January 6, 1898; died March
30, 1985). Viola, too, was one of six children; she attended District No.
44 Hoff School and Eureka High School.

Erwin and Viola made their home on a farm located two and one-half miles
east of Eureka. The Depression of the 1930's made it necessary for them to
start their home on a limited income. However, low grocery prices were in
their favor; fifty cents would buy ten pounds of sugar. Meals were cooked
on a coal and wood-burning stove, and horses were used to do the farmwork.
The graveled road going by their farm was later widened and a black-top was
put on. In 1949, when the REA brought electricity to their farm, the
workload for Erwin and Viola was made lighter. Their way of living improved
greatly.

Their farming operation came to emphasize cattle and grain. Through it all,
Erwin and Viola were good examples of the German work ethic. Days on the
farm were made up of hard work, long hours, and perseverance. The Kurle
family remained proud of its German heritage and loyal to the Eureka
community.

Aside from his farm duties, Erwin served on the McPherson County Zoning
Board and the committee for McPherson County Livestock and Crop
Improvement. He was president of the Rural Fireman's Association, and he
served on the Board of Directors of the Federal Land Bank Association
(Aberdeen) for 25 years. Erwin also was active on the Rosenthal School
Board for many years, and he was a 4-H leader. Viola, in addition to being
a helpmate on the farm, served the Eureka community as a member of the
Hospital Auxiliary.

The church affiliation for the Kurle family is United Methodist, and the
family has taken an active part in serving the Eureka church throughout the
years. Erwin served as church treasurer and chairman of the Administrative
Board, and he was a Sunday School superintendent and a Youth Fellowship
leader. He also was an officer of United Methodist Men, and he sang in the
Men's Chorus and the church choir. Viola served the church as a Coordinator
of Children's Work, a Sunday School and Bible School teacher, and a Youth
Fellowship counselor. Additionally, she served as circle leader for United
Methodist Women and as co-chairperson of the Supportive Community
Committee. Viola was a member of the church choir, too.

Two children were born to Viola and Erwin. Wayne, born September 1, 1945,
was married to Cindy Hendrickson. They reside in Sioux City, Iowa, and
their daughters are: Camille Kurle, Courtney Kurle, and JoLynn Hendrickson.
Lee, born on January 12, 1950, was married to DeQuetta Rohrbach. The family
lives in rural Eureka with their children: Christopher, Leila, and Aleshia.

Erwin Kurle died September 14, 1978. After his death, Viola moved to a home
in Eureka, and the family farm is being operated by the Lee Kurle family.

FRED F. AND ROSENA OBENAUER

Fred and Rosena Obenauer

Fred F. Obenauer was born October 26, 1894, on a farm six miles northeast of
Java, South Dakota. This is where he grew up, attended school and helped his
parents with the farming.

On January 9, 1916, Fred was united in marriage to Rosena (Rosie) Schlepp. She
was born September 12, 1895 to John J. and Helene (Doebele) Schlepp on a farm
seven miles northeast of Java, South Dakota. After their marriage, Fred and
Rosena settled on a farm northeast of Java, near his father's homestead.

When his parents moved to Eureka in 1919, Fred took over the family farm and
lived there until 1927, when he too moved to Eureka. They lived in Eureka for
about five years and then moved to a farm north of Eureka. Farming demanded
long hours and hard work. Much of the field work was done with horses. It was
not uncommon for women to help with the field work. Milking was done by hand, 20
to 25 cows, twice each day.

For fuel, corn cobs and the famous mischt (pioneer lignite) were used. Making
mischt was a chore nobody liked, especially the children. It was smelly when
wet and it was hard work to lift and stack the dried blocks. Making mischt
became a necessity, survival required it. Coal was expensive and was used to
keep the fire going during the night.

Many hardships were endured during the Depression and drought. Dust storms were
so bad the sky would be dark, obstructing the sunlight. The harvest wasn't much
either as there were as many thistles as stalks of grain and grasshoppers were
thick, eating what little grain there was. Because of lack of feed, on orders
of the government, cattle were shot, thrown into a pit and buried. We were
allowed to take one critter to butcher for our use.

After the marriage of their son, Ervin, the elder Obenauers moved to Eureka,
where milking and raising poultry was their livelihood. They retired when their
pasture and land under cultivation was taken over by West Lake Eureka.

Fred and Rosie were the parents of eight children: Ida (See Peter P. Schmidt
history), Hertha, Ervin (see Ervin Obenauer family history), Elsie, Edna,
Violet, Janice, and Leroy.

Hertha was born September 12, 1917, rural Java, married Wallace Hay in March,
1940. Wallace died at sea in the service of his country on November 13, 1942. A
son, Walter Charles Hay, was born May 31, 1942 at Eureka. Hertha and Reuben
Fischer were married May 14, 1947. Reuben was born June 10, 1917 in Campbell
County, South Dakota. A son, Kenneth Fischer, was born December 9, 1949. They
live in Hinkley, California.

Elsie was born October 27, 1921, rural Java. She married Eugene Ellis on August
23, 1943 in California. Their children are Betty Ann, Robert and Rose Marie.
Elsie and Eugene live at Frazier Park, California.

Edna was born July 17, 1923 and died May 2, 1925 at Bowdle, South Dakota.

Violet was born January 27, 1928 at Eureka. She married Ray C. Koerner at
Eureka. They have five children: Jerilynn Kay, Carole Rae, Steven Charles,
Kathleen Rose and James Craig. Ray and Violet live in Buena Park, California.

Janice was born April 17, 1931 at Eureka. She married Elmer Opp at Eureka.
Elmer was born June 17, 1926. They have five children: Karen Ann, Russell Dean,
Janet Rose, Gaylynn Marie and Alan LeRoy. They live in Pittsburg, California.

LeRoy was born November 21, 1937, rural Eureka. He married Lois Peterson on
October 30, 1966 at Aberdeen, South Dakota. They have four daughters: Tammy,
Kerry, Rosina and Daniele. They live at Aberdeen, South Dakota.

FRED J. AND KATHARINA HOFF Katherina and Fred J. Hoff holding great granddaughter Neala Singer, 6 months old. Fred J. was born December 5, 1888, to Johan Hoff and Rosina, nee Heiser, Hoff in a sod house in rural Campbell County. Fred attended the rural school, had an eager interest in good health, and had dreams of becoming a medical doctor. However, the lack of a cash income kept him from fulfilling the dream of his youth. Katharina was born February 10, 1888 to George G. Neuharth and Christina, nee Goehring, in McPherson County. Being the second eldest, of fourteen children, she did not have the privilege of attending an English school--for she was needed at home. Her education was in the German language provided by her home and church. (Her father was a Sunday school teacher and church organist for many years.) Both the Neuharth and Hoff families were of German descent who had come to America from Kassel, South Russia, in 1874. On September 28, 1912 Fred and Katie were married at Eureka, and were lifelong members of the Eureka Reformed Church. They farmed eight miles southwest of Eureka. Fred owned a threshing machine. He and his crew threshed for many area farmers. He found pleasure in nature, such as planting fruit trees and watching them develop, and raising a vegetable garden. He also enjoyed playing his harmonica. Katie was a creative homemaker, who enjoyed raising flowers, crocheting, handiwork and reading. She also was the German teacher in the family. A heritage which her children are ever grateful for. Ten children were born to this union, five sons and five daughters. The six living today are: Esther, born January 15, 1915, married to Edward Lindemann, rural Mound City; Edwin F., born November 3, 1917, married to Bertha Kirschenmann, rural Eureka; Violet E., born July 8, 1922, married to Reinhold Lindemann, Eureka; Leah, born October 6, 1928, married to John Pfahl, Papillon, Nebraska; Gideon, born July 18, 1931, married to Priscilla Docktor, Lodi, California; Benjamin, born March 9, 1935, married to Loretta Docktor, Medford, Oregon. Lindemann, died August 1974; Hulda, born February 16, 1916, the late Mrs. Walter Beck; Gottfried, born September 1920; and Alvin born January 4, 1925. The Hoffs were privileged to celebrate their Golden Wedding Anniversary on October 29, 1962. They both have passed away, leaving 23 grandchildren and 51 great grandchildren. HARRY H. AND LORENE HOFF Denise, Curtis, Harry and Lorene In 1879, Harry H. Hoff's grandfather, Michael Hoff, Sr., moved to Menno, South Dakota, from South Russia, where he lived with his family until 1889. They had ten children, one being Henry, born October 3, 1900, who farmed with his family. On March 7, 1926, he married Lydia Kraemer of Ashley, North Dakota; after which he started his own farm. Henry and Lydia had two children, Eileen (Mrs. Dellver Burrer) and Harry. On July 7, 1957, Harry married Lorene Zimmerman, daughter of Edwin and Lydia (Kautz) Zimmerman of Artas, South Dakota. In 1958, Henry and Lydia moved into Eureka after farming thirty-two years. The land has been in the family for one hundred years.
