In 1850, 25 year old German-born farmer Joseph Yonce lived in District 107 of Seneca Twp., Monroe County, Ohio with his wife Mary Ann (24) and children Elizabeth (6), Barbara (4), George (2) and Belona (1). Only Elizabeth attended school. The children were all born in Ohio. The oldest three children were from Mary Ann's first marriage. Joseph's real estate was valued at $500.
In 1860, the family still lived in Seneca Twp. on a farm worth $4700. Members of the household were Joseph Yontz (36), Mary A. (34), Elizabeth (16), Barbary (14), George (12), Apalone (10), Mary A. (9), Margaret (6), Hannah (4), Clara (3), and Phermina (1). The census taker used a ditto mark (") for the surname of each person under Joseph Yontz, indicating that the last name of all the children was Yontz. (The oldest three children were from Mary Ann's first marriage to George Becker.)
At the time of the 1870 census, Bavarian-born farmer Joseph Yontz (45) still lived in Seneca Twp. He was fairly well off... his farm was worth $7000 and his personal possessions were valued at $1280. Joseph lived with his wife, Maryann (43), also born in Bavaria, and children Michael (17), Hannah (15), Clarissa (13), Philomena (11), Joseph (9), Chrisena (7), Catharine (5), Juliann (3), George (1), and Martin (1 month). None of the children attended school.
According to researcher Mark Haren, Joseph Yontz fathered 19 children, plus 3 step-children. At this time, the names of only 13 children, plus the three step-children are known. It should be noted that the child(ren) born in 1853 -- Margaret and Michael -- may be the same child... they do not appear in any census together. Joseph Yontz's funeral services were conducted by Reverend Ignatus Sagerer.

Anthony Ehrstein. about 50 years of age, was arrested yesterday for assaulting
his wife, Katherine, at their home, No. 9 Rugraf place, a little street running from
No. 406 Jay street. The family consists, beside* the husband and wife, of seven
children, five girls and two boys. Mrs. Ehrstein has worked hard to maintain the
family when her hnsband could not or would not support them.
Ehrstein has been employed by the contractor on the Front street pavement. He
went on strike with other laborers and while the men have been out he has spent
hiost of his time in consuming bad whisky.
Yesterday morning he arose at 5 o'clock and left the house, returning at 5:30 in the morning in
an ugly mood with a strong smell of liquor on his breath. He started to annoy
his wife and becoming angered beyond control, seized her by the throat and was
choking her when their 11-yoar-old son Interfered to save his mother and struck
the infuriated man on his head with a shoe. The blow mude a slight scalp wound,
but made Ehrstein release his grip on his wife's throat. He threatened to kill her
before the day was over and behaved in such a terrifying manner that his eldest
son, a young man about 25 years old, was obliged to interfere to prevent serious
trouble.
Finally Mrs. Eliwtein procured a warrant for her husband's arrest and he was placed
where he could not harm his wife or children. He was charged with assault in the third degree
and his case will come up before Judge Ernst to-morrow morning.
Officer Scholl made the arrest yesterday nfternoon. It was thought at the police
station from the man's manner that he was insane. He has been arrested before
for cruelty to his family.

EHRSTEIN SENT UP
He of High Fence Fame and Poetic Inclinations goes to Jail to Sober Up.
Anthony EHRSTEIN of 9 Rugraff street, he of high line fence notoriety, who is a laborer by occupation, but spends much time writing poetry about his neighbors and then tickling himself in the ribs to make himself laugh over it, is in trouble.
EHRSTEIN, who when sober does not appear to be overburdened with sense, is very queer and does some strange things when intoxicated. His principal delight when under the influence of liquor is in exercising his vocal organs, and there is a saying in the neighborhood that EHRSTEIN's yells are so well known by people there that when children awake in the night and ask what strange sound they heard, the mothers invariably say, "Never mind, don't be alarmed; EHRSTEIN's drunk again, that's all."
EHRSTEIN has been drinking for several days past, and is said to have written more poetry than usual, and to have sung his favorite songs and yelled his favorite yells till he has driven his wife and neighbors almost to despair, Mrs. EHRSTEIN, who takes very little stock in her husband's ability as a writer of poems, applied yesterday for a warrant for his arrest on a charge of drunkenness and making a nuisance of himself. He was sent to jail this morning and will remain there till he becomes sober and the smile which always, drunk or sober, wreathes his smoothshaven face, reaches its normal state, when but one lone tooth is visible and there is a twinkle in Anthony's eye which seems to say: "I get even mit him yet; is it is."

http://www.fultonhistory.com/Fulton.html
Anthony Ehrstein, who was arrested some time ago on the charge of threatening
to commit aesault upon Frank Schoen, was brought into the presence of the police
magistrate yesterday morning. From the point of view of the complainant, the visit
was entirely satisfactory, Ehratein being sentenced to pay a fine of $25 or serve
twenty-five days in the penitentiary.Ehrstein's home ia on Rugraff place, and
Schoen lives in the vicinity.' The complainant wanted redress for certain alleged
wrongs that he had suffered at the hands of Ehrstein. Schoen is a milk peddler.
He has a milk route and also has the use of a barn, owned by Mrs. Alice Quinn,
that is in the rear of Ehrstein's place, Schoen's complaint is that one night
when he was comfortably seated upon the milking stool in the barn, and was engaged
in milking one of the cows that comprise his good-sized herd, a big stone whizzed
past his ear. He was certain that it was hurled by Ehratein, and a loud shout at
the same momenf confirmed' this impression. He also says that Ehrstein lately
threatened to brain him with an axe, and that he was afraid that he would carry out
the threat. For this reason he had the man placed under arrest. Ehrstein does
not like to have the barn there. He said that he did not threaten to kill Schoen and
had no such intention.

EDWIN AND BERTHA HOFF Back row, left to right: Kathy, Sharon, Bonnie and Gary. Front row: Bertha, Gail and Edwin Hoff. Edwin F. Hoff, the son of Fred and Katharina Neuharth Hoff was born November 3, 1917 and lived his first 24 years on the family farm six miles west and one and one-half miles south of Eureka, South Dakota. He attended the neighborhood one room country school house, Hoff No. 44, for eight years. A high school education was desirable, but not practical during the depression years, so Edwin worked for his father on the family farm except for two summers which he spent working on farms in North Dakota and Minnesota when crops failed in the Eureka area. Bertha Hoff, daughter of John and Johanna Knoepfle Kirschenmann of Artas was also raised on a farm and was no stranger to hard work. Her father, John, settled in the Artas area as an 18 year old immigrant from Odessa in South Russia. Bertha received her eighth grade education from the Postal Country School south of Artas. Although she dreamed of being a nurse, the economic conditions of the 1930's prevented her from fulfilling that dream, instead she worked on her family farm and cooked for threshers as well as caring for her ailing mother. Other jobs included serving as a housekeeper and nanny for a wealthy family in Michigan and several winters were spent working at the Eureka Lutheran Home. Bertha's half-brother, Art Schweigert and wife, Martha, farmed one-fourth mile from Edwin's family farm. It was through the Schweigert's that Edwin and Bertha first met. They were married in Artas, South Dakota E.U.B. Church on a cold wintry night on December 3, 1944. The Schweigert farm was then acquired by Edwin and Bertha where they have lived all their married life. Today Edwin is semi-retired, but is still very energetically engaged in farming with his son Gary and wife, Joan. Gary and his family reside in the remodeled two-story house that Edwin was raised in. Besides cows, hogs, horses, chickens and turkeys, Edwin and Bertha also have had the joy of raising five healthy children. Their eldest daughter, Sharon, is married to Wade Winters and lives in Urbandale, Iowa where they are employed as high school teachers. Sharon teaches German and Spanish and is the mother of two children, Christy and Wade Lee Bonnie is married to Don Austin and lives in West Des Moines, Iowa just a few miles from sister Sharon. Don is an attorney and banker and Bonnie is a retired high school teacher and mother of five children, Marc, Michelle, Monae, Michael and Matthew. Gary returned to the farm after graduating from Westmar College and serving in the U. S. Air Force for four years. His wife, Joan, is a beautician and is employed at Meda's Beauty Salon. Their children are Sarae and Seth. Gary also, occasionally serves as an x-ray technician at the Eureka Community Hospital. Kathy has her Masters Degree in Physical Education and is married to Rev. David Glader. After serving several churches in South Dakota, Indianapolis, Indiana and Ontario, Canada, the couple is involved in church planting in Rapid City, South Dakota. They have two children, Rachel and Paul. The Hoff's youngest daughter, Gail, has her Master's Degree in Home Economics and is living on a dairy farm near Hoven, South Dakota with her husband, Dale Duenwald. They are the parents of three children, Michael, Jonathan and Mandy. FRED J. AND KATHARINA HOFF Katherina and Fred J. Hoff holding great granddaughter Neala Singer, 6 months old. Fred J. was born December 5, 1888, to Johan Hoff and Rosina, nee Heiser, Hoff in a sod house in rural Campbell County. Fred attended the rural school, had an eager interest in good health, and had dreams of becoming a medical doctor. However, the lack of a cash income kept him from fulfilling the dream of his youth. Katharina was born February 10, 1888 to George G. Neuharth and Christina, nee Goehring, in McPherson County. Being the second eldest, of fourteen children, she did not have the privilege of attending an English school--for she was needed at home. Her education was in the German language provided by her home and church. (Her father was a Sunday school teacher and church organist for many years.) Both the Neuharth and Hoff families were of German descent who had come to America from Kassel, South Russia, in 1874. On September 28, 1912 Fred and Katie were married at Eureka, and were lifelong members of the Eureka Reformed Church. They farmed eight miles southwest of Eureka. Fred owned a threshing machine. He and his crew threshed for many area farmers. He found pleasure in nature, such as planting fruit trees and watching them develop, and raising a vegetable garden. He also enjoyed playing his harmonica. Katie was a creative homemaker, who enjoyed raising flowers, crocheting, handiwork and reading. She also was the German teacher in the family. A heritage which her children are ever grateful for. Ten children were born to this union, five sons and five daughters. The six living today are: Esther, born January 15, 1915, married to Edward Lindemann, rural Mound City; Edwin F., born November 3, 1917, married to Bertha Kirschenmann, rural Eureka; Violet E., born July 8, 1922, married to Reinhold Lindemann, Eureka; Leah, born October 6, 1928, married to John Pfahl, Papillon, Nebraska; Gideon, born July 18, 1931, married to Priscilla Docktor, Lodi, California; Benjamin, born March 9, 1935, married to Loretta Docktor, Medford, Oregon. The four deceased are: Ella, born February 23, 1914; the late Mrs. R. Lindemann, died August 1974; Hulda, born February 16, 1916, the late Mrs. Walter Beck; Gottfried, born September 1920; and Alvin born January 4, 1925. The Hoffs were privileged to celebrate their Golden Wedding Anniversary on October 29, 1962. They both have passed away, leaving 23 grandchildren and 51 great grandchildren.

ANDREW AND EMMA (KREIN) STOEBNER Andrew Stoebner Emma Stoebner Andrew Stoebner is well remembered as one of the most active pioneers of the Eureka community. He was born on the family homestead in McPherson County on April 13, 1897 to Heinrich and Christina (Spitzer) Stoebner. Parents were born in Kassel, Russia and came to the U.S.A. in 1884. In 1885 they settled on a farm eight miles east of Eureka. Sisters and brothers of Andrew are: August, Henry, Adam, Magdalena, Christina, Albina, Lydia and Martha. All are deceased with several others dying in infancy. Andrew attended rural school and Eureka Lutheran College. He married Emma Krein on November 18, 1919. They farmed near Eureka from 1920 to 1927 before moving to Eureka where he became very active in public and civic affairs. He served on the Eureka School Board in the 30's, was a member of the City Council, city baseball manager, 50 year member of the Masonic Temple, State Representative 1952-56, State Senator 1961-64, manager of N. W. G. F. Insurance Company 1927-40, associated with the Eureka State Bank and an insurance salesman until his retirement in 1965. They were members of the Eureka Reformed Church. Andrew passed away February 19, 1979. Emma (Krein) Stoebner was the eighth of fourteen children born to Margaretha (Mehlhaff) Krein and Friederich Krein. The Krein's emigrated from Russia to Eureka in 1885. Emma was born May 4, 1898 in the sod house which they had built on their homestead. It was located about eight miles east and two miles south of Eureka. Life was very hard on the prairie and at a very young age she was helping to herd cattle, milk cows, and doing other farm chores. During her teens she worked with a hand plow, did headering and threshing with horse power, pitched grain on a stack with the threshing crew, and so on. She helped with all kinds of farm work. As a twelve year old she could be left at home to care for the younger children, do the cooking, sew on her mother's machine, wash the clothes by hand, while her parents and the elder children worked in the fields. Sisters and brothers of Emma were: Edward, Julius, Theodore, Maria, Christina, Paulina, Helen, all deceased, Margaretha, Martha, Emil, Fred. Albert died in infancy. One day that Emma recalls with special fondness is her wedding day, November 18, 1919. The groom, Andrew Stoebner, and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Heinrich Stoebner left their farm to meet the wedding party at Emma's home in a new black Dort automobile with side curtains. There was so much snow on the road the car became stuck. Andrew had to return to the farm for a team of horses and bobsled. From Emma's home the wedding party and guests traveled in two Ford touring cars, which were higher from the ground than the Dort. Traveling with the bride, the groom, and the Stoebner parents were the best man and matron of honor, Mr. and Mrs. August Stoebner, parents of the bride, Mr. and Mrs. Friederich Krein, and brother of the bride, Mr. Julius Krein. The snow hampered their travel so much that they arrived at their destination, the home of Mr. and Mrs. Friederich Kline in Eureka, three hours later than expected. When the time came to perform the ceremony it was discovered that Andrew had left the marriage license at home on the farm. Since it was impossible to travel the roads again, Mr. Karl Volander of the Eureka State Bank was kind enough to issue a duplicate and the Reverend Gustav Zenk pronounced them man and wife. On June 21, 1923 the first of three sons arrived and was named Clarence Eugene. He married Patsy Ruth Sjobom. Their children are Kip Andrew, Kerry Ruth, Beth Ann, and Sue Christina. Clarence earned a B.S. degree in Business and Engineering at the University of South Dakota, Vermillion. He sold insurance and raised grapes in their vineyard at Lodi, California. Clarence passed away suddenly, following a short illness on November 11, 1979. March 19, 1927 brought a second son, Benjamin Elmer, who married Mary Jane McCarthy. Their children are: Benjamin, Edward, Margaret Emma, and twins Elizabeth and Andrew. Ben earned a doctoral degree in Optometry at Pacific University, Forest Grove, Oregon. Ben and family reside in Tehachapi, California where he is in private practice. Their family was complete with the arrival of Darrold Andrew who was born August 16, 1935. He married Carolyn Jensen. Their children are Andrew Alan, Charles Robert, and Sarah Katherine. Darrold earned a doctoral degree in medicine from Northwestern University, Chicago, Illinois. Holding the rank of Colonel, he retired in January of 1984, following twenty-two years of service in the United States Air Force. He resides in San Antonio, Texas. The spitting image of his grandpa Clarence is Clayton Valentine Worfolk, son of Beth Ann Stoebner Worfolk and the first great grandchild of Emma and Andrew. Emma was a staunch supporter of several community organizations. A lifelong member of the Eureka Reformed Church, she is a charter member of the Ladies Aid. She is also a charter member of the Eureka Hospital Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary, the Royal Neighbor, Eastern Star and the Eureka Garden Club. Her formal education in the farm school was minimal, however, she had a great desire to learn and taught herself through reading the Bible, newspapers, and catalogs at home. She was able to broaden her understanding of people and places in the state of South Dakota and the nation through travel. During the eight years that Andrew served as representative and then as senator in the state legislature Emma's good nature and excellent cooking endeared her to many. Through the years she has renewed these friendships during the many auto trips she and Andrew took from coast to coast and Alaska, to visit sons and families. At the age of eighty-six Emma is thankful to have been blessed with good health and a good life. She extends her best wishes to the people of the community and the city of Eureka on the occasion of its one hundredth birthday.
