DIED, after a lingering illness, on Thursday morning, at half past 8 o'clock, at the residence of Mr. George Green, near St. Joseph's Perry Co., Ohio. Mr. Nicholas Zahm, aged 87 years.

The subject of this notice was born at Olsburg, in Wolminster County, Germany, on the 2nd day of April, 1787, and moved to this country at the age of 42 years. After landing at New York City, he purchased a horse and wagon and in his humble way, he moved his little family across the mountains to Wayne County, Ohio, where he resided till the year 1838, when he moved to Perry County, Ohio, where he purchased a small farm near St. Joseph's, on which he lived for many years. Becoming old and feeble, he sold his farm to his daughter, Mrs. Beber, and chose his home with his son-in-law Mr. George Green, where he died, as will be seen, on the morning of his 87th birthday. Mr. Zahm was a quiet, inoffensive man; honest and industrious; a strict member of the Catholic church; without an enemy on earth, he has left an example worthy of imitation. He left four sons and four daughters together with one hundred grand and great grand children to mourn his loss.

My Great Grandmother Barbara Louise Robling was born on August 8, 1871 in Waukegan, ILL, the 4th of 12 children of Adam Robling and Catherine Scherer. Adam and Catherine were both born in SW Germany near the Alsace-Lorraine area by the French border. Adam was born in 1829 and arrived alone on the Ship Arcadia into the port of New Orleans on December 24, 1850. He was a ?cooper?, which is a barrel or cask maker. He died in Waukegan in 1894. There is a theory as of yet unproven that Adam was related to the Robling?s of central Pennsylvania who came to America about the same time as Adam. The Pennsylvania Roblings produced Washington Robling who became a noted bridge builder, building the famous Brooklyn Bridge. Catherine Scherer was born September 22, 1842, a daughter of Jacob Scherer a brother to the founders of Schererville, Indiana. Catherine died in Waukegan on March 27, 1920. She and Adam and four of their sons are buried in St. Mary?s Catholic Cemetery located right next to Oakwood Cemetery in Waukegan. Barbara Louise?s birth is recorded in the St Joseph?s Catholic Church Register in Waukegan. She was baptized on August 13, 1871. I have more information on the Robling and Scherer families, but that is another project. Anyone with questions about the Robling?s or Scherer?s are welcome to contact me.
The children of Adam Robling (1829-12/7/1894) and Catherine E. Scherer (9/24/1842-3/27/1920)Robert Robling, August 1862-1925 Jacob Peter Robling, May 1865-5/19/1932. Married Amelia Marie Lartigue Frank Robling, 3/18/1867-7/22/1893. Married Lizzie Brand Elizabeth C. ?Mame? Robling, birth and death dates unknown. Married Max Braade on 1/9/1897. Barbara Louise Robling, 8/8/1872-4/24/1948. Married William Fulton Edward F. Robling, 1874-2/10/1943. Married Augusta (last name unknown) Charles Julius Robling, 2/24/1876-12/14/1952. Never married Annie M. Robling, 4/26/1878-???. Married John C Hoehnen. Matthew Robing, (twin of Annie), 4/26/1878-1893. Christian M. Robling, 9/29/1880-5/18/1931. Married Mary F. Francis Susanna ?Sue? Robling, 10/7/1882-1962. Married Alexander Deluga Augusta ?Gussie? Robling, Feb. 1886-???. Married Mr. Bolin.
Adam Robling and Catherine Scherer had at least 23 grandchildren.
William Thomas Fulton was an Episcopalian and Barbara Louise Robling was Catholic. According to family stories they originally decided to raise sons as Episcopalian and daughters as Catholic but Great Grandma soon decided that would not be practical and agreed to raise them Episcopalian. She apparently never let go of her Catholic faith as after William Thomas? death in 1939, she began attending a Catholic Church. Barbara Louise Robling Fulton died on April 24, 1948.
William Thomas Fulton was killed by a drunk driver on September 12, 1939 at the intersection of Austin Avenue and Diversey in Chicago at 1:30 A.M. Anthony Pellikan was arrested on charges of manslaughter. According to family stories, the accident occurred near William?s residence at 5958 Ohio Street and that one of more of William?s sons were there shortly and held Mr. Pellikan, who was drunk, for police. At the trial, when asked if he had been drinking that night, Mr. Pellikan said no. This apparently infuriated Robert, William?s second son, who approached Mr. Pellikan outside the court and knocked him cold, after which my Grandfather had to help convince the police not to arrest his brother. I don?t know the disposition of the case.
William and Barbara are buried in Ridgewood Cemetery, Cook County, ILL. Section 8, lot 726. They bought the plot on June 4, 1937. Ridgewood Cemetery is located at 9900 Milwaukee Ave., Des Plaines, ILL. Also buried there are their daughter Carol Mae and son Gardner.

BIOGRAPHY:

Everyone seems to have the elusive family line, always
around but not quite the connection. The FEIST line is
mine. Mary Elizabeth (Mamie)HOFMANN was said to
"intermarry" with Edward F.FEIST (My Grandfather). I can find
no reason for the "inter" marriage part. Both lines were
Catholic and as far as I can tell and I have found no
relatives that they share.

Mary Elizabeth (Mamie)FEIST-HOFMANN Edward F FEIST Wedding Photo Sept. 16 1923 Edward Frederich FEIST arrived from Germany (the Ruhr Valley Region) sometime in the 1870's.He married, settled in Brooklyn, had children and made his fortune as a Baker. At one time he owned a bakery on Knickerbocker Ave. in Brooklyn, New York.

Rumor is that he and a brother Frederich had a "falling out" and never spoke to each other even though they lived a few blocks from each other. Ironically, they are both buried in Most Holy Trinity Cemetery in Brooklyn, NY. side by side in different grave sites. How sad to live in Eternity together and not have shared their lives.

What I do know is contains here-in. Look on in over at Census Records and Scattered Leaves for more FEIST facts.

The first FEIST I know of,with documentation.
