22001 Johann Michael* Jung (May 13, 1802 - December 9, 1879) was born in Rumbach, Germany to Johann Michael* Jung (1776 - Feb. 24, 1851) and Maria Elisabeth* Rucklos (1779 - July 11, 1852). He was the second oldest child and the oldest son in a family of 5 children. His older sister, Philippina Jung was born December 23, 1800. Johann Michael* Jung (May 13, 1802 - December 9, 1879) and his family, were the immigrants who transplanted our Jung/Young family from Germany to America.
The Jung family in Germany had been a family of weavers and during most of Michael's life, times had been hard. Michael (May 13, 1802 - December 9, 1879) had been born at a time when Germany was highly fractionated into over 300 small states and principalities. Napoleon had risen to power and was in the process of conquering Germany and most of Europe. By the time Michael was 10 years old, Napoleon had been defeated. Germany had been largely consolidated into a few larger states and a police-state government had been established that severely repressed the population.
In 1854, within 2 years after his mother, Maria Elisabeth* Rucklos (1779 - July 11, 1852) died, Michael (May 13, 1802 - December 9, 1879) converted all of his family's assets into cash and emigrated to America. Over the preceding 2 or 3 decades many families from his community had already immigrated to America. Michael was therefore immigrating to a new German colony of his peers.
The 1870 U.S. Federal census lists Michael Young, 68 years old, from Bavaria as a weaver.
The death record of Michael Young lists his date of death as Dec 9, 1879. His age on this date was 77 years, 5 months and 26 days. Back calculating his date of birth from the death record data does not agree with the German record of his birth date by one month. It would appear that his age should have been given as 77 years, 6 months and 26 days. This might have been a simple mistake made when his age was calculated at the time of his death. I have elected to use the date of birth which came from information that was supplied on his family church record from Germany.
According to the German Church records the date of birth for Michael Young was May 23, 1802. Also, the date of marriage in this reference is given as November 2, 1827 in Rumbach, Germany
I found in a document titled "Passenger and Immigration Lists Index" in the Carnegie Library at the University of Pittsburgh, Pa, the following entry: aboard the REGULATOR from Havre to New York on 04 August 1854:
Michel Jung age 50
Barba age 50
Salome age 18
Caroline age 20
Michael Young bought 80 acres of land from Herman Hahn on Oct 11, 1855.
Caroline Jung (May 19, 1832 - ?) married Georg Jacob Zimmerle (April 27, 1830 - ?) on November 15, 1855. Georg Jacob Zimmerle went by the name of Jacob. The records of three German churches (Lewisville, Miltonsburg and a church located between the two called Middle Church -- these records were translated and published by Dr. Shirley Harmon ) indicate that Jacob Zimmerle landed America in 1836 having come from Grafenhausen, Germany, north of Annweiler. This same record indicates that Jacob and his wife Caroline moved to Tennessee.
Salome Jung (July 23, 1836 - ?) married Jacob Bott (July 29, 1835 - ?) on April 16, 1862. [There is some uncertainty regarding whether this is the correct Jacob Bott who married Salome Jung. She married a Jacob Bott, but the records show at least another Jacob Bott of about the same age. All circumstantial evidence seems to point to this being the correct Jacob Bott.] The record of Jacob and Salome Jung Bott appears to end with their marriage. It would appear that Salome and her husband may have left Monroe County after being married.
For completeness of the historical record of the Michael Jung family, it should be noted that Caroline and Salome had an older brother, Frederick Jung / Young (December 23, 1830 - February 4, 1912) who was the great, great grandfather of the author. Frederick Young immigrated to America in the spring of 1854, about 3 months ahead of his parents and two sisters. He went to Monroe County where there were a number of his friends and relatives from the Rumbach, Germany area. On May 20, 1856 Frederick Young married Eva Pfeiffer who lived with her parents about a mile away from the Young farm that Frederick and his father bought near Lewisville, Ohio. Frederick and Eva (Pfeiffer) Young had 8 children, one of whom was Louisa Young (1863 - 1913) the author's great grandmother.
Fred Young's headstone in the cemetery at Lewisville, OH shows his date of birth to be Dec 23, 1829. Frederick's death certificate shows his date of birth to be December 23, 1830.

Education and Career[edit]
Zahm attended the University of Notre Dame in 1867 and graduated with honors in 1871 as a Novitiate of the Congregation of the Holy Cross.[2] He finished his theological studies and was ordained in 1875.[3] Zahm was hired by the University of Notre Dame as a science teacher although he had interest in literature.[4] During his time teaching he wrote the text Sound and Music in 1892.[5] He was appointed the Vice President of Notre Dame at 25 years old and held the position for nine years. In 1895, he was recognized as Dr. of Philosophy by Pope Leo XIII.[6] He went on to fill various positions in the Congregation, at one time being a provincial from 1898 to 1906 and served as Procurator General for the Congregation of the Holy Cross. Zahm became a leader in the drive to pacify the tensions between Roman Catholicism and Darwinian biology, and became well known in the Catholic arena as he was asked to speak in many Catholic Winter and Summer School lectures. His lectures concerning Genesis can be found in a volume called Bible, Science and Faith.

Writing[edit]
Father Zahm is the author of many scholarly texts and published works against the Darwin movement.[7] He also wrote Catholic scientific essays published in Ave Maria and American Catholic Quarterly Catholic World.[8] He fought through writing and used his detailed background in science to defend the ability of God and Catholic faith to remain in the scientific sphere. Focusing on Catholic men of science in the past, Zahm created a magazine called Catholic Science and Catholic Scientists. Between 1891 and 1896, Zahm published multiple books and articles on the topic, culminating with Evolution and Dogma in 1896.[9] In this text, as in his others, Zahm argued that Roman Catholicism could fully accept an evolutionary view of biological systems, as long as this view was not centered around Darwin's theory of natural selection. After the Vatican decided to censure the book in 1898, Zahm fully accepted this rebuttal and pulled away from any writing concerning the relationship of theology and science.[10] He was the author (sometimes under the pseudonym of H. J. Mozans), of a number of books covering a large variety of subjects. He wanted to keep his identity as a secret for the fear of his works being cast away if his Catholic priestly identity was associated with them. His pseudonym was derived from the way he signed his name as a youth: Jno. S. (Stanislaus, an abandoned middle name) Zahm. His works have been translated into French, Italian, Spanish, and read in Europe, North and South America. Among these works are: Woman in Science (not to be confused with the plural phrase 'women in science'), and "Great Inspirers[11]" Both of these works were some of the first in exposing the idea that woman can be involved in the sciences and have been in past history. Through these works, Zahm defied beliefs that women were incapable and divinely appointed to not interfere with science. The Quest for El Dorado, and the general title of his trilogy was "Following the Conquistadores[12]", and the titles of books called "Up the Orinoco and Down the Magdalena" (1910), "Along the Andes and Down the Amazon" (1912), and "In South America's Southland[13]" (1916), draw from his travels throughout South America. He was an enthusiastic Dante student and assembled at Notre Dame one of the three largest of the Dante libraries in America.

Presidential Friend[edit]
Zahm befriended 26th President of the United States Theodore Roosevelt, who also loved and read Dante in Italian. It was Father Zahm who talked President Roosevelt into participating in what came to be known as the Roosevelt-Rondon Scientific Expedition to South America, and which would also include Theodore's son, Kermit, and Colonel Da Silva Candido Rondon, to go up the Rio da Dúvida (River of Doubt, now the Roosevelt River). This trip[14] deteriorated into a near disaster which caused one man to drown, another to be murdered, and Roosevelt nearly dying, shortening his life by probably ten years from the combined effects of malaria and infection. The trip almost cost the others their lives as well, as the members lost boats to waterfalls and rapids and almost ran out of food. They barely made it to the first sign of civilization and some certainty that they would survive. The elder Roosevelt had to be carried off his canoe, so weak and ravaged by sickness had he become. Zahm unwisely delegated planning and provisioning of the trip, and so irritated Roosevelt and Rondon that he was not permitted to go on the expedition itself, but took a side trip instead. Throughout his life he collected maps, photographs, relics, and curios which were added to the valuable collection of fifteen hundred volumes of South American history and research work at Notre Dame.

Death & Post Death[edit]
He planned a book on historical and archaeological study of the Holy Land, but died of bronchial pneumonia in a Munich hospital en route to the Middle East. The manuscripts of his working book "From Berlin to Baghdad and Babylon[15]" was found and published posthumously.[16] Zahm Hall, a male dormitory at Notre Dame, is dedicated in his honor. The dorm's chapel is dedicated to St. Albert the Great, who Fr. Zahm saw as a pioneer in bridging the gap between science and religion.

22009 John Berger was a minister in the German Evangelical Association (Methodist Church) who served as a Union chaplin during the Civil War, he was also a member of the Albright Brethren (also called the Evangelical Association, a Methodist group of ministers that traveled the US -- mostly to German speaking communities -- preaching in German). The two went back to Susanna's native Illinois after they were married for a few years where John worked as a minister in Prairie, Shelby, Illinois. They had a son there but he died while they were in Germany. Susanna and John went to Germany early in their marriage to do missionary work and had two other children there. They then came back to Indiana and had the rest of their children there. They moved to California in 1890 but John died not long after and Susanna basically had to raise their nine children alone.

22011 JOHN CHRISTIAN ALLMAN. The career of John C. Allman, proprietor of Allman's Coal & Building Supply Company, of Huntington, has been an active and varied one and has invaded several widely divergent fields of activity. A machinist by trade, in his young manhood he trod the boards as a member of several theatrical companies and subsequently, for a time, was employed in the city's public service. Since 1918, however, he has been identified with his present business, of which he is the sole owner, and which has become one of the leading enterprises of Huntington.

Mr. Allman was born at Huntington, May 6, 1881, and is a son of Christian and Elizabeth (Fisher) Allman. His grandfather, Charles Allman, was born in the State of Hessen-Hamburg, Germany, whence he immigrated to the United States in 1840 and settled in Ohio, where his death occurred in 1862. Christian Allman was born at Canal Dover, Ohio, February 4, 1854, and was eight years of age at the time of his father's death. He passed his life on a farm until 1872, in which year he came to Huntington County, Indiana, as agent for a farm implement company. Later he became the proprietor of a retail liquor store until 1908, disposing of his interests therein to engage in the coal and lumber business, until 1910. He then embarked in the business that formed the nucleus for the present large concern of which his son is now the proprietor. Mr. Allman commenced the business in a modest way, with a small capital, but his energy was boundless and he possessed good business judgment, so that soon he was noticed as one of the coming coal and building supply dealers of the city. He continued to increase and develop the business and at his death, March 17, 1930, was known as one of the substantial business citizens of Huntington. While he never mixed in politics, he was interested in civic affairs, particularly in those movements which had for their object the betterment and welfare of the city of his adoption, and could always be counted upon to give his hearty support to such enterprises. In 1880 Mr. Allman married Miss Elizabeth Fisher, who was born at Huntington, in 1858, a daughter of of Nick Fisher, a pioneer shoe merchant of the city. She still survives, as do four of her five children, of whom John C. is the eldest.

The public schools of Huntington furnished John C. Allman with his educational training, and after he had graduated from high school he applied himself to learning the trade of machinist, which he followed for several years while thus employed the opportunity presented itself for him to join a theatrical troupe, at which the youth eagerly grasped, and for several years appeared on the stage. Deciding that the life of an actor was not his forte, in 1909 he accepted a position in the office of the city civil engineer of Huntington, and continued to be thus employed until 1918, when he became his father's associate. Since the elder man's death he has been the sole owner of Allman's Coal & Building Suuply Company, which is a wholesale and retail business, with a commodious coal yard and supply house, and a splendid new office building at 933 Second Street. Mr. Allman stands high in business circles and has an excellent reputation among his fellow-members in the Indiana Building and Supply Association. As a member of the Chamber of Commerce he cooperates with other public-spirited business men in the formation of new movements for the betterment of the city. A Catholic in his religious views, he is a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Loyal Order of Moose. His hobbies consist of gardening and raising flowers.

Mr. Allman married Miss Mabel Clara Fahl, who was born on a farm in Union Township, Huntington County, Indiana, a daughter of Samuel Fahl, now deceased, a pioneer farmer of the county, and to this union there have been born five children: Frederick John, William Christian, Robert Burdett, Eloise Lucille and Virginia Lou. The pleasant and attractive family home is situated at 1325 North Guilford Street.

22013 JOHN HILLENBRAND, SR. In the death of John Hillenbrand, Sr., which occurred in 1910, the City of Batesville and community lost one of its most capable and energetic business men. Mr. Hillenbrand was the founder of the American Furniture Company. one of the city?s most substantial industrial enterprises and today numbered among the country?s largest industrial plants of its kind. Mr. Hillenbrand was also the founder of the Hillenbrand & Mitchell Company, of Batesville, which was organized by himself and his son-in-law, George Mitchell, which concern later became The Hillenbrand Company. In 1906 he, together with his sons, took over and reorganized The Batesville Casket Company, which today is one of the largest manufacturers of casket and burial supplies in this country. During his active business career Mr. Hillenbrand was instrumental in furthering the interests of the city from the time of his arrival to this community in early manhood. Heavy responsibilit!
ies were thrown upon his shoulders at an early period in his life and these assisted in developing a strong and sturdy character and qualities that assisted in making him a business and civic leader in his later years. Mr. Hillenbrand was born on a farm in Ripley County, Indiana, in the year 1843. He attended the public schools of that vicinity, however, his education was not of an elaborate nature, as his father died when he was but ten years of age and he was forced to assist in the support of the family. In the year 1876, when thirty years of age, he with his wife and five children left the farm and moved to Batesville where he embarked in the general store business with his brother William Hillenbrand, the business being operated under the name Hillenbrand & Brother, General Merchandise and Farm Implements. Two years later the furniture plant at Batesville, its most important industry, was destroyed by fire, and Mr. Hillenbrand, always alive to opportunity, purchased t!
he property, rebuilt the plant along larger and more modern lines and
with some other associates founded the American Furniture Company, this concern coming into being in 1879. At the outset it was an unpretentious business, limited by a small capital, and employed about twenty employees. The mercantile business was kept in operation until 1888, when John Hillenbrand bought his brother?s interests and with his son-in-law, George Mitchell, reorganized the merchandising business under the name Hillenbrand & Mitchell Company. Several years later, Mr. Hillenbrand sold his interest in the Hillenbrand & Mitchell Company, and put the money thus secured into the furniture plant, which originally covered 8,000 square feet, and specialized in the manufacture of bedroom furniture. In the year 1896, George Mitchell died and several years later Mr. Hillenbrand?s son-in-law, A. W. Romweber, took over Mrs. Mitchell?s interest and became secretary of all of the Hillenbrand companies. Under the able direction and mature judgment of Mr.!
Hillenbrand the business showed a healthy growth, and about every five years it was found necessary to add additional buildings and equipment. At the present time the plant covers 240,000 square feet, and employs about 220 skilled mechanics, office workers and traveling salesmen. The Hilienbrand Company?s sawmill and lumber manufacturing department was organized in 1890, at Batesville, with John A. Hillenbrand as president and George M. Hillenbrand, vice president, and bought a large acreage of standing timber in Ripley County, where for a time seven sawmills were operated. This acreage consists of American walnut, oak and poplar timber, which is used in the manufacture of furniture, and the business employed ninety men. Mr. Hillenbrand then organized the Batesville Casket Company, of which he became the owner in 1906, the active management of the plant being taken over by his son, John A. Hillenbrand. From a small concern, employing only a few men, the casket co!
mpany now has approximately 16,000 square feet, with an output of 15,0
00 caskets a month, 160 men being employed. John A. Hillenbrand is now president of the Batesville Casket Company his brother, George M. Hillenbrand, vice president, and A. W. Romweber, secretary. John Hillenbrand also organized the Batesville Electric Light & Power Company and ten people are now employed to make and furnish electric light and nower for the city of Batesville and other communities in Ripley County. The light company now has 900 meters in use, with a 700-kilowatt production, John A. Hillenbrand being president of this company. George M. Hillenbrand vice president and treasurer, and A. W. Romweber, secretary. John Hillenbrand also founded the Batesville Water Works Company in 1901, and the plant was sold to the City of Batesville in 1928. In 1913 the Batesville Cabinet Company was organized by the sons of John Hillenbrand, Sr., namely, George M. and John A. Hillenbrand and A. W. Romweber and now employs 255 people in its plant, specializing in the manufactu!
re of dining room furniture. This plant has 345,000 square feet of floor space and is located at Batesville, George M. Hillenbrand being president and treasurer, John A. Hillenbrand, vice president, and A. W. Romweber, secretary. John A. Hillenbrand is also president of the First National Bank of Batesville and of the First Savings & Trust Company, a position which he has held since the bank?s organization in 1907. John Hillenbrand, the elder, was a son of William Hillenbrand, who was born in Alsace-Lorraine and came to the United States in young manhood, settling in 1830, in Ripley County, where he passed the remainder of his life in agricultural pursuits. John Hillenbrand, the subject of this sketch, married Miss Margarett Herr, a native of Dearborn County, Indiana, who died in 1929, at the age of 87 years. Mr. and Mrs.. John Hillenbrand are survived by four children: Mrs. Mary A. Mitchell, George M. Hillenbrand, John A. Hillenbrand and Mrs. A. W. Romweber. While!
he was primarily a business man, John Hillenbrand never refused any o
f the responsibilities of citizenship. He was a member of the first town council of Batesville, and served as postmaster of Batesville during President Cleveland?s second administration. George M. Hillenbrand, son of John Hillenbrand, attended the schools of Batesville until he was fourteen years of age, at which time he entered his father?s plant and gradually learned the business details of the various enterprises conducted by his father. So well did he progress that at the age of twenty-one years he took active charge, after spending several years as a traveling salesman. When he became twenty-three years of age he was made president and general manager of the controlling company. He and his brother, John A. Hillenbrand, a review of whose careers will be found elsewhere in this work, are liberal minded, far-sighted business men, and their plants give employment to about eighty per cent of the population of Batesville. 22015 JOHN J. HAUCK, Lawrenceburgh, was born in Germany in 1816. He was reared to early manhood in his native country, immigrating to the United States at the age of sixteen years. He located in Cincinnati and was there engaged four years in the baker's trade, which he learned of his father in the old country. In 1836 he married Ann M. HORNBERGER and in the same year came to Lawrenceburgh, and opened up a bakery and confectionery, which he conducted for several years. He entered the hardware trade subsequently and also carried a stock of dry goods, conducting these lines of business from 1843 to 1859, when his failing health compelled him to retire from active business. Mr. Hauck served in the city council for several years, and in 1873 was elected mayor of Lawrenceburgh, holding the office for a period of six years and discharging his duties fearlessly and creditably. In 1880 his health failed entirely, and he departed this life February 2d of that year. He was an enterprising business man, and always made his influence felt in the progressive measures relating to the city. He was one of the founders of the Miami Valley Furniture Factory, and to his energy its ultimate success was largely due. Mr. Hauck was the father of eight children, seven of whom are still living, namely: John, John J., Caroline M., Henrietta M., George F., Emma C. and Warren N. Two of the sons are grocers, located at Greenfield, Ind., and a third at Indianapolis, Ind. In 1847 Mr. HAUCK, with George Ross' assistance, built the first Reformed Church in Lawrenceburgh. He was a member of the Reformed society for eleven years, but subsequently joined the Presbyterians. Both as business man and citizen Mr. HAUCK occupied and enviable position in the esteem of his associates. Warren N. HAUCK, son of John J. HAUCK, and city attorney for Lawrenceburgh, was born in the said city in 1860. He grew to maturity in the town of his birth, and was educated in its public schools, graduating in 1878. In 1880-81 he took a course in the Nelson Business College, Cincinnati, and in the fall of the latter year entered the Cincinnati Law School, graduating in 1883. He entered upon the practice of his profession in Cincinnati and continued the same in that city one year, when he came to Lawrenceburgh, May, 1884. Previous to this he had in 1882-83 attended for a time the McMichen University of Cincinnati. In the spring of 1884 he was elected to the office of city attorney of Lawrenceburgh, to fill the unexpired term of A.W. Ganes, who had tendered his resignation, and in this position he is now employed. He is a young man of excellent character, and with the qualities of mind and heart calculated to secure for him success of the highest order.

22016 JOHN KIRSCHENMANN.

Among the additions to the ranks of the agriculturalists of San Joaquin
County is John Kirschenmann, who resides on his 160-acre ranch, four miles
southwest of Lodi. He was born in Yankton County, S. D., August 24, 1875, a son
of Jacob and Eva (Bender) Kirschenmann, both natives of Southern Russia who
settled in South Dakota in 1873. Jacob Kirschenmann acquired 480 acres under the
homestead, timber claim and preemption acts and besides this he also purchased
additional farm land. The mother died in young womanhood, leaving the husband
and father with five children: Ludwig resides at Shafter, Cal.; Christina, Mrs.
George Schaffer, is deceased; Jacob resides at Yankton, S. D.; John, the subject
of this sketch; Eva, Mrs. Nuss, resides in South Dakota. Subsequently the father
married again and reared ten children by his second wife: Christian, Karl,
Magdaline, Theopold, Edward, Emma, Eugene, Emil, Manuel, and Benjamin.
John received a grammar school education in the district schools of his
native county and grew up on his father's farm, and there received a practical
knowledge of agriculture. At the age of twenty-two he began farming for himself
and was soon afterward, in November, 1897, married to Miss Christina Bender, a
daughter of Phillip Bender, who was also a farmer in South Dakota. Mr.
Kirschenmann purchased 160 acres in South Dakota, where the family lived until
1904, when he sold his property and came to California and settled on his
present ranch of 160 acres. This ranch is situated on the Stockton Highway some
four miles southwest of Lodi, on which there is a producing vineyard of twelve
acres and the balance is used for grain and pasture. He also bought eighteen and
one-half acres opposite his home ranch and thirty acres near Hawes Station and
eighteen and one-half acres in vines on Cherokee Lane, near Lodi. Mr. and Mrs.
Kirschenmann are the parents of seven children: Henry, Theodore, Pauline, Lydia.
Ella, Arthur, and Edwin; and the family are members of the German Reformed
Church of Lodi. During Mr. Kirschenmann's residence in South Dakota he served as
a school trustee of his district and also as a trustee in his church. He is a
Republican in politics.

History of Huntington County (Indiana), 1914, p810-811 Jacob Karst, whose labor has been the measure of his success, has for some years been numbered among the prosperous agriculturalists of Lancaster township. Years ago he started his operations with no capital save energy, determination, an active body and a strong mind; today he is the owner of 200 acres of valuable land lying five and one-half miles southwest of Huntington. He is, moreover, a citizen who has gained the trust and confidence of his fellow men through a life of industry and integrity, so that he figures prominently in public as well as agricultural circles of his section. Mr. Karst was born in Hancock county, Ohio, April 24, 1852, and is a son of Peter and Anna (Zeigler) Karst. Peter Karst was born in Germany, and as a young man decided to cast his lot with the citizens of the United States, of whose country he heard such glowing tales. Accordingly, he came to this country, and after a short stay in New York, his landing point, made his way to Pennsylvania, where he met and married Anna Zeigler, a native of the Keystone state. Subsequently, they moved on to Hancock county, Ohio, then to Henry county, Indiana, and finally to Huntington county, this state, and in the Spring of 1865 located in Polk township, where Mr. Karst continued to be engaged in agricultural pursuits throughout the balance of his life. He was the father of five sons and four daughters, and of these children four are living in 1913: Peter, who is a resident of Huntington, Indiana; Jacob; Barney W., a resident of Montana; and Sylvester, whose home is in Polk township. Jacob Karst received his education in the schools of Ohio and Indiana, in the vicinities in which the family lived from time to time. He was a lad of thirteen years when brought to Huntington county, and here he assisted his father in the cultivation of the home property, growing up to sturdy manhood and learning thoroughly every branch of the farming industry. He remained as his father?s assistant until he was twenty-seven years of age, and during this time, through industry and right living, through thrift, economy and good management, he saved some $1,200. Deciding to establish a home of his own, he was married in 1879 to Miss Mary B. Miller, of Huntington township, and they began housekeeping on the farm on which they now reside, and on which they have continued to live with the exception of three years when Mr. Karst was looking after the old homestead. The present property of 200 acres has been accumulated by steady industry, and has been brought to a high state of cultivation. Its buildings are substantial and modern in character, its improvements of the best and its machinery of the latest manufacture. The sleek, well-fed and content livestock testifies to Mr. Karst?s abilities as a raiser of cattle, horses and hogs. Mr. and Mrs. Karst are consistent members of the Catholic church of Sts. Peter and Paul at Huntington, and he is affiliated with the Knights of Columbus and St. Joseph?s Society. He is a democrat in politics, but has never found time for public office, and had he done so it is doubtful if his quiet and unassuming nature would have allowed him to accept preferment. Mr. and Mrs. Karst have been the parents of twelve children, of whom ten survive in 1913: Anna, who is the wife of Edward Morris, of Fort Wayne, Indiana; Florence, who married John Blomeke, of Steuben county, Indiana; Edward J., who is married to Anna Scher and resides in Lancaster township; George, of Lancaster township, who married Edith Scher; and Joseph, Mary, Julius, Jacob, Jr., Catherine, and Vergelia, all single and residing at home with their parents.

Other marriages:
Heil, Maria Carolina
In 1880, 29 year old farmer Joseph Crum lived with his wife Mary (29) and daughter Barbara (2) in Jefferson Twp., Noble co., Ohio. All members of the household were born in Ohio, Joseph and Mary's parents were born in Germany.
In 1900, 50 year old farmer Joseph Crum lived with his wife Lena (48) on a farm they owned in Jefferson Twp., Noble co., Ohio. Living with them were their children Barbara (22), Mary (19), Strella(?) (10), Lucy (8), and Mela(?)(4). (Barbara and Mary were Jospeh's children from a previous marriage.) All members of the household were born in Ohio, Joseph and Lena's parents were born in Germany. Jospeh and Lena had been married for 23 years and according to the census, Lena had given birth to 5 children all of who were still living. (This may not be correct; the census taker may have included Joseph's children from his first marriage when counting Lena's children.)
Magdelene Riesbeck [Parents ] "Lena" 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 was born on 17 Jul 1853 in Monroe Co., OH. She died on 22 Dec 1938 in Noble Co., OH. She was buried in St. Mary's Cemetery, Fulda, Noble Co., OH. She married 7 Joseph Crum in 1886.
Lene Reisbeck could speak English, but could not read or write. She was born in Ohio to German-born parents. The 1900 census states that Lena Crum gave birth to 5 children, all of whom were living in 1900. However, church records indicate that Lena gave birth to only three children (Cecelia, Lucia, and Amelia). The two older daughters in the household at the time of the 1900 census were from Joseph Crum's first marriage to M. Carolina Heil.
In 1910, 55 year old widow Lena Crum lived with her daughters Cecelia (21) and Clara A. (14) on a farm she owned in Jefferson Twp., Noble Co., Ohio. According to the census, Lena was the mother of 5 children, 3 of whom were still living. All members of the household were born in Ohio, Lena's parents were born in Germany. Lena's occupation is listed as farmer on the census.
At the time of the 1920 census, 66 year old widow Lena Crum lived alone on a farm she owned in Olive Twp., Noble Co., Ohio. Lena was born in Ohio, her parents in Germany.
In 1930, 75 year old widow Lena Crum lived in a home she owned (value $3000) at 909 Fairground Street, Caldwell Villiage, Olive Twp., Noble Co., Ohio. She owned a radio.
The following appeared in The Times Signal (Zanesville, OH) newspaper on October 18, 1930: VISITED DAUGHTERS Mrs. Lena Crum, West Fairground street, returned home Tuesday afternoon, after a week's visit with her daughters, Mrs. W. H. Archer and Mrs. Ben Sorg, near Fulda. During her absence she attended confirmation exercises for her three grandchildren. She also motored to Woodsfield, her old home town, and other places of interest.
The following note appeared in The Zanesville Signal (pg 7) newspaper on 12 Jan 1932: Mr. and Mrs. Ben Sorg and children, Berne, were recent guests at the home of Mrs. Sorg's mother, Mrs. Lena Crum, West Fairground street.
Lena Riesbeck Crum's obituary appeared in The Zanesville (OH) Signal on Dec 23, 1938: MRS. CRUM DIES Mrs. Lena Reisbeck Crum, 85, widow of Joseph Crum died Thursday at her home on West Fairground street, here. She had been ill for the past five weeks from heart ailment. 22033 Joseph farmed with his brother Jacob, and lived with him. His father Joseph Bulfer Jr gave him the north 80 acres of his farm with the provision that he couldn't sell it as long as his parents lived. With the first load of oats that he sold from that farm he bought himself a pocket watch, an 18 size Waltham, 17 jewel with diamond end stones on the balance. It was always the standard time keeper at our house. Joseph purchased land in Martin County, Gelena Township, Section 34 240 acres. He purchased it on March 10, 1905 for $13200 and sold it Feb 24, 1914 for $22800. The years that he owned this property and lived in Illinois he went to inspect his farm a couple of times a year, and stayed with his brother John. John and the Heckels were friends and it was on one of these trips that he met Johanna Heckel. Bulfer, Joseph Francis (I228684)

Newspaper article: The following resolutions were adopted on the death of one of the charter members Joseph J. Brown. In Memoriam. Joseph J. Brown, Died June 1, 1927 The death of Joseph J. Brown, charter member of the C. Y. M. A. of St. Joseph's Chruch on Wednesday, June 1st, came as a distinct shock to all the officers and members of the Association. In the thirty-seven years of his membership, he had always taken a lively interest in all of its functions, thereby lending his whole-hearted support to the work carried on by the Association. Being a life-long member of St. Joseph's Church, it is with sincere sorrow that we record his passing from our midst; the more regrettable, called as he was in the prime of his life and at a time when he had manifested an ever increasing interest in the welfare of the parish. Let these minutes be entered in our records and a copy forwarded to the stricken family, who have the sincere sympathy of every member of this Association in the hour of their great bereavement. Let it be further urged that all members of the C. Y. M. A. attending the High Mass of Requiem to be said at the request of the members of St. Joseph's Church Tuesday, September 6th, at 7 o'clock. Board of Management, C. Y. M. A. of St. Joseph's. Newspaper article [date unknown]: Brown Market Gains Favor with Service Joseph J. Brown Market, located at 17 Richmond Street, has succeeded in satisfying its hundreds of customers for a good many years due to its policy of giving the best service and immediate service. The reason the Joseph J. Brown Market is popular not only in the east end of the city, where it is located, but with housewives all over the city, is first and foremost because it combines giving the best in meats and meat products with a first class and thoroughly reliable delivery service. The fact that the Joseph J. Brown Market is out of the downtown section has proven to be an advantage rather than a handicap for the firm has developed as its policy one important fact, namely that it will pay the strictest kind of attention to its telephone orders and select for the housewife who orders her meat in this way, the best that the market has, and to see to it that it is delivered promptly. Consequently, many housewives all over the city have found out that they can save themselves much trouble in personal marketing, by simply ordering what they want on the telephone, knowing in advance that the meat they order will be chosen for them, just as they ould choose it, if they were there themselves and further that it will be delivered when they want it and that they can depend on that. Whether it is pouldry, a steak or a roast for an elaborate dinner or only a piece of meat to be boiled, you can purchase it at the Joseph J. Brown Market. You will find that the prices are always very reasonable and that the quality is always [last phrase cut off]. Newspaper article [Date prior to 1927]:Mr. and Mrs. Joseph J. Brown of the Lake Road, entertained ninedy of the orphans from St. Joseph's Orphan Asylum of Rochester on Tuesday. They left the asylum at 9 A. M. in cars led by Miss Alma Englert. After a busy morning spent in playing games, they were served on the lawn with a sausage roast and all kinds of good things that kiddies like. In the afternoon they were entertained by a clown who also distributed the prizes. That same evening Mrs. Brown entertained the ladies of her card club and their families. The family story was that 3 brothers came over from Germany, Georg Joseph Brown, Johann Adam Brown (1830), and a 3rd brother. This might be Nicolaus Theodor Brown. his is the list that Judy Jones provided for us. What I have done, is
put red notations on the status of what is in your database. Some of the
information may be new to you, while other information has not yet been
recorded. These are Judy's notes, so if you read that she doesn't know
who the person is, I gave her the info on them.

Judy has been amazing and very helpful in providing an extended line to
the
Mandery family. So glad that we could hook up. Thanks so much, Judy.
Want to continue working with you. As always, will do what I can for Das
Projekt.

Judy did all of this research on her own. It is a fact, that you cannot
find the Mandery surname in burial records on the Cinn. Catholic Cemetery
Assoc. website. She also stated that when she went there, she was unable
to find headstones. This is quite sad. I tried so many variations of
the surname, but had no luck.
