16777 Helen Sweetring, the fourth of eight children born to John and Phebe Swietering, came into this life on March 25, 1865, in Quincy, Illinois. Her dad, John, was an immigrant iron moulder from Prussia who married Phebe, a girl from New York. They settled in Quincy and raised eight children there.

According to the July 28, 1870 Federal census of Quincy, John Swietering, 38, and his wife, Phebe, 35, lived with their children John, 11, Cecilia, 10, Edward, 8, Nellie (Helen), 5, Ida, 3, and Romeo, 8 months. John, Cecilia, and Edward were in school but Helen and Ida had not started school yet.

On the June 5, 1880 Federal census of Quincy, John Sweetering was 48, Phebe 47, John, 19, Cecilia, 18, Edward, 16, Helen, 14, Ida, 12, Rhomulus, 10, George, 8, and Fred, 5. John was a shoe clerk in Quincy, while Helen, Ida, Rhomulus, and George were in school.

While in Quincy, Helen met a Gem City College student by the name of James J. Benda. I do not know if Helen was a student at Gem City, but she was listed in later census records as having attended three years of college. I would guess that James and Helen both attended Gem City Business College and met there. Helen Sweetring and James J. Benda did marry in Quincy, Illinois, probably around 1894 or 1895, and moved to Jefferson County, Iowa. Their first child, Genevieve, was born in 1896, followed by Maurice in 1897, and Helen in 1898.

The June 5, 1900 Federal census of Penn Township, Jefferson County, IA, listed James J., 31, his wife Helen (Sweetring), 32, and their three children, Genevieve, 4, Maurice, 3, and Helen, 1. James lived in the farm adjacent to his sister, Barbara Benda Pacha, and another sister, Mary Benda Pacha, in Penn Township.

Between 1900 and 1910, Helen and James sold the farm in Jefferson County and moved north of Brighton to Marion Township in Washington County. The April 19, 1910 Federal census of Marion Township, Washington County, listed James J., 41, his wife Helen, 41, and their three children Genevieve, 13, Maurice, 12, and Helen, 11. Jim and Helen had been married 16 years. Jim was born in Michigan, Helen in Illinois, and the children in Iowa. Jim was listed as a farmer and owned the farm free and clear. The kids all attended school that year.

The 1915 Iowa census found Helen P. (Sweetring) Benda, 45, in Marion Township, Washington County. She reported having lived in Iowa for 20 years. She achieved three years of college and her church affiliation was Catholic. Helen died later that year, on August 31st, at the age of 50, and was buried in Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington. She left behind her husband, James, 47, and children Genevieve, 19, Maurice, 18, and Helen, 17.

16778 Hello Barbara, I have some Schuetz folks in my tree. I'm finding, irritatingly enough, thatsome sources will spell a name one way and some spell it another way. My Schuetz's start with Johann Friedrich Schuetz b. 1757 in Vorderweidenthal, Pfalz, Germany. He married Sophia Christina Jacobina Veiock in 1781. Their kids were: Johann Friedrick, Johann Michael, Elisabetha Margaretha, Georg Peter, Johann Jacob, Johann Heinrich, Catharina, and one stillborn. If you think this might help you, I have a little more info on this family. Let me know. Heather Jacob Jonathon Schütz, Johannes Friedrich (I22054)

16781 Hello,
I'm trying to find a death record for my g-grandfather Mahler/Maler Yockey (born Valentine Maler Yockey, 1858, Indiana). He was the first husband of my g-grandmother, Sarah Ellen Ashcraft and left her in Gordon, NE to find work "out west; fell off a scaffold and died". He shows up in the 1900 census together with my g-grandmother, grandmother, and her two older brothers--all in Gordon, NE, but then he disappears. One of his sons, Irwin Jasper had two daughters and a son; the other son, Arthur was unmarried. Any knowledge of this family would be appreciated.

16786 Henry Wilson Storey's History of Cambria County, V.III, p.534
ABRAHAM FYOCK, a retired farmer of Johnstown, Cambria county Pennsylvania, who has achieved prominence and veneration for his work in the interests of the Dunkard church of Walnut Grove, is a descendant of German ancestry.

Jacob Fyock, father of Abraham Fyock, was born about the year 1812. He purchased a large tract of land in Conemaugh township, near the Frankstown road, and this he cleared of timber, proceeded to cultivate, and it is at the present day the Fyock family homestead, and in the possession of his son David. The greater part of his life was spent on this homestead, and he was very successful in its cultivation. He married Barbara Reichard, and had children: 1. Samuel, married Mary Lehman, had nine children, all now deceased, eight of them being carried off in early youth by diphtheria. 2. Jacob, married Susannah Berkebeil, and had children: John, George, Richard, Ida, Clara and Mary. 3. Abraham, see forward. 4. Daniel, married Annie Wissinger, and had children: Ezra, George, Jerome, Henry, Cyrus, Andrew, Harvey, James, Rose and Sevilla. 5. David, married Lizzie Williams, and had children Frank, Ephraim, Ella and Pearl. 6. Barbara, married John Keiper, and had children: Elmer, Emery, John, Ettie, Annie, Gertrude, Bertha and Ida. 7. Annie, married George Keiper, and had children: Sevilla and Emma.

Abraham Fyock, third son and child of Jacob and Barbara (Reichard) Fyock, was born on the Fyock homestead, November 30, 1844. His early years were spent on the farm of his father, assisting the latter in its management and thus acquiring a practical working knowledge of the details of farm life. Upon the death of his father he resided with his brother, who had assumed the management of affairs, until he had attained his eighteenth year, when he removed to Johnstown and obtained a position with the Cambria Steel Company in the rolling mill. He enlisted in Company F, One Hundred and Ninety-eighth Pennsylvania Volunteers, in 1864, Captain Stackhouse, commanding. He served in all ten months, taking an active part in the battles of Petersburg, Five Points, and several others. He was present with his regiment at the surrender of Lee. At the close of the war he was honorably discharged, and returned to Johnstown, where he found employment with John Tieter, a farmer. Later he married and went with his wife to live on the Fyock homestead, remaining there until 1869, when he purchased a farm in that vicinity. He cultivated this successfully until 1892, when he sold it to advantage and retired from active work. He removed to Walnut Grove, where he purchased a comfortable dwelling, with some adjoining land, and devoted all his time and attention to the Dunkard church of Walnut Grove, to which he had been elected minister in 1889. Ten years later the congregation elected him an elder, and at the present time (1906) he is filling both these offices in an eminently satisfactory manner. He has also charge of the Bolivar Dunkard church, at Bolivar, Pennsylvania, where he preaches twice each month. His long and faithful services in the interests of this church have been fully appreciated.

Mr. Fyock married, November 23, 1865, Nancy Varner, daughter of Samuel and Catherine (Good) Varner. Samuel Varner was a son of George and Christina (Horner) Varner, was a farmer by occupation, and proprietor of a farm of sixty-nine acres. George Varner was a son of Nicholas Varner, who emigrated from Germany to this country in the early part of the nineteenth century. Abraham and Nancy (Varner) Fyock had children: 1. Samuel H., born October 21, 1866. 2. Clarissa J., born February 15, 1868, married, May 26, 1889, Scott Wilson. 3. Sarah A., born September 13, 1870, married, November 10, 1895, Benjamin Strayer. 4. Rachel E., born September 15, 1873, married, October 3, 1893, John Mills. 5. Emma C., born October 10, 1875, died May 28, 1880. 6. James W., born August 10, 1879. 7. Lucy E., born February 9, 1883, died November 16, 1887. 8. John C., born June 29, 1885.

16789 Her name was Gerda Meijer at mmeijer@iae.nl

She said he was buried at Margraten and that he was a 2nd lieuteant in the 506th Parachute
regiment 101st airborne. His grave says he was from Pennsylvania.

She felt drawn to his grave because he died the day her town (Son) was liberated during Operation Market Garden. I told her that was because he was killed in her hometown. They were trying to capture a bridge before the Germans could blow it up.

There is a lot of information available including a book called Band of Brothers by Stephen Ambrose about one of the companies in the 506th.

In Saving Private Ryan, when they meet Ryan he says "I'm Ryan of the 506."

My father, Thomas J. Seibel was born 9/22/20 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Before he entered the 101st Air Corp on March 3, 1943, I believe he was a woodworker. He married my mother on March 11, 1943. "Tommy" was MIA on September 17, 1944 in an invasion over Bladel,Holland.

"Operation Garden Market" a wild scheme to put an early end to the Second World War,encountered bad luck and bad weather. The movie "A Bridge Too Far" tells the story.

16791 here's a pizza joint in town that calls itself "Batavia's Original" and claims it was established in 1947, but whatever claim the shop has to a once legendary local pizzeria was lost three weeks ago when the company fired its manager, Sam Pontillo.

Pontillo helped a group of Rochester investors open the pizzeria at 500 E. Main St., Batavia, in a building that was once home to a Pontillo's restaurant owned and operated by Sam's parents, Sal and Betty Pontillo.

Sal, more commonly known as Sam, with his brother Anthony, opened the original Pontillo's at the corner of Liberty and Ellicott streets in 1947. The original Pontillo's was the first pizzeria in Batavia and helped create a new pizzeria industry in Western New York.

Sam Pontillo says it's time for the Rochester-based owners to stop trading on his family's name.

Besides the claim to being established in 1947, the restaurant's menu also has a picture of Sal Pontillo right in the middle of it (pictured above).

"It (the menu picture) should come off now," Sam said. "There's no Pontillo involved and we?re not getting residual from it. They're going to milk it for as long as they can, but they should do the stand-up thing and remove it."

"As for the 1947," Sam added, "how can they really use it? There?s a family attachment to 1947. I?m sure some lawyer will say it?s just a number, but it?s a significant number to my family."

Batavia's Original is a DBA of Batavia Pizza, LLC, a creation of Thomas Masaschi, Jeffrey Reddish and Jason Teller.

The Rochester-based group acquired the 500 E. Main St. location in 2009 after a bank foreclosed on the property.

The owners then hired Sam, who still operated the Pontillo's location in Le Roy, as the new shop's general manager and opened as Pontillo's in April 2010.

A few months later, Anthony Pontillo's heirs (Anthony filed for a federal trademark on "Pontillo's" in the 1980s) filed a trademark infringement suit against Batavia Pizza, LLC.

The suit was settled out of court and and the name of the restaurant was changed.

Local sources who have followed the Pontillo's saga immediately speculated that without the ability to use the Pontillo's name, Sam Pontillo wouldn't be long for employment at Batavia's Original.

It's a bit of speculation that Sam, now out of Batavia's Original, doesn't argue against.

"I make no bones about it," Sam said. "I told our management staff that when the owners felt they could do it on their own, they wouldn't need me anymore because there was no longer a Pontillo's name on the sign."

Sam said he was let go three weeks ago because, he said he was told, he wasn't bringing in enough money.

"Of course, at some point about this time, I was due for a pay increase," Pontillo said. "It's a corporate thing. It's a story that's repeated all the time. They're hardcore businessmen."

The Batavian called the real estate investment office of Thomas Masaschi this afternoon and requested an interview. We were told he wasn't available and left a message. The call has not yet been returned.

Sam Pontillo said he isn't rooting against Batavia's Original at all. He said he's proud of the people he hired and trained and believes they will do a great job with the business.

"I think it will go on as long as everybody gets their noses to the grindstone and does what I taught them to do," Sam said. "It will continue to be a great place that employs a lot of kids from the community and continues to serve the community as it has always done."

Sam Pontillo isn't the only Pontillo who takes issue with Batavia's Original trying to trade on the Pontillo's name. Sam's brother John was quite pointed in his remarks this morning.

"They're using my father's face on their menu and it's not right," John said. "I don't think it's very respectful to use a picture of a man who is dead. He hasn't endorsed their business."

John currently operates a pizzeria -- Gio Vanna's -- in Geneseo and was planning to open a shop in the former Pontillo's location in Le Roy.

After paying off back taxes on the property, John said he was planning to buy the building from the estate of Betty Pontillo, but he claims Sam removed the furnace and the hot water heater.

"The building we agreed to buy is not the same building the estate has for sale," John said.

Sam disagrees.

"If he would just look on the roof, there's a practically brand new heating system there," Sam said.

As for hot water, there's still hot water available in the building, Sam said.

He added that he thinks the Le Roy location is a fine building that he cared for meticulously.

"I hope somebody buys it," he said. "It's a great location."

As for Sam's future, it's wide open, he said.

He's looking at options for new businesses from Brooklyn to Albany and even Dubai.

"I'm 52," Sam said. "I figure I'll ride out the next project out until retire. Hopefully it will be rewarding, so I?m just being careful before I move on.

"I'll tell you," he added. "I'm not missing working seven days a week."

Whatever the future, Sam said he doesn't see himself going back in business with his brothers John and Paul. There's just too much water under the bridge after a few years of disagreements.

"It's unfortunate how things worked out," Sam said. "We were all great buddies growing up, but business got in the way and killed those relationships."

But none of what has happened means there won't be a Pontillo's in Genesee County again some day.

"If I could swing it some time and open a Pontillo?s and show the neon sign again in Batavia, it would be a big hit," Sam said.

Even if isn't owned by Sam, he said he's got at least one son, now studying hospitality in college, who might want to operate a Pontillo's some day.

"If that?s what he wants, I'll absolutely go to it and get it done for him," Sam said.

He said he feels he still owns the rights to a Pontillo's business in Genesee County.

Asked if there was anything he wanted to add, Sam thanked his staff and customers.

"You're only as good as people around you," Sam said. "I had a great staff around me. I also just need to thank people of Batavia and Le Roy, where I think I still have a following. It was a pleasure to serve them, it was a ball, it was riot. I will miss the customers. Maybe someday I'll throw a party somewhere and invite them all over."

16795 Hi Kathy: Dad did graduate from Annapolis in 1923; Married Katherine Alice Parkhurst of Rochester/Syracuse the same day. Received his commission and sailed as gunnery officer on the old USS Pennsylvania. Within two years, chronic seasickness led him to beseech Congress for a transfer to the U.S.Army which was effected in 1925 (a precedent setting act). He lost his two year seniority as an ensign. As the lowest shavetail in the Coast Artillery, he started over at Ft. Wright in L.I. Sound, then was sent to HNL where, in 1931, he and Kay were blessed with me. Oh, it is so good to be in touch with both you and Jen. Zimmer, Layton A. (I178071)

16796 Hi Mary, I got user unknown when I emailed you. Email me mdbelty@webtv.net and maybe then a reply to yours will go through. I was at Barrens last Saturday, I live about a mile or two from there, I was looking for names for a lady in California, but didn`t find anymore of her Sappenfield`s. I have some of the Feiock stones at Barrens on my camcorder now... but not the couple you spoke of. I was just randomly filming. I can email you photo`s of any or all of these if you don`t have them. (List below)I stopped by there after work a bit ago, I saw a Charles Feiock born in 1804 and died Feb. 1st or 7th not sure in 1861. I DID NOT see a Sickle Feiock. some stones were on the ground, maybe the case with her stone. It was getting dark and it`s weeds past my knees. I deed to go Saturday and walk the lower part and look for more stones on the ground. These graves I saw today, Elizabeth wife of Charles F. Feiock who died Oct. 2 or 2_ something, cant make it out, 1819 aged about 3_ yrs Then there was a Mary Ann wife of Charles Feiock died April 7, 1862. Do any of these sound like who you are looking for? If not I can always go back. By the way, have you ever heard of REAP cemetery at Bradford? It was, so they say missing for about 30 years. It was covered in brush and woods. My horse fell over a tombstone there 25 yr`s ago, but I didn`t know anyone was looking for it and I wasn`t interested in genealogy then either. REAP Cmetery has alot of German names in it but NO Feiocks in it. Some surnames are Sappenfield, Sears, Beyerly, Byerly, Bracken, Lagle,Langford, Lindsey, Jonas Hon, Amos Holtzclaw, Huffstetter, Keithley, Baker, Ingram, Burford, Boston, Fouts, Dinkalaker anyway I have a list of 60 + people if anything sounds interesting Just to make sure I have this correct, are talking about Barrens Cemetery on Cemetery Road off of Hwy 135. Has a large wooden sign mentions something about settlers Indians and flowers? Or the cem off Hwy 64 out of New Salisbury heading toward Ramsey on Rooster Ch. Road? Maybe I was looking in the wrong place. Marsha Belty One more thng, What other surenames are you looking if any, that could be around here? I am 56 yrs old now. Have 2 children, Laura & Stephen, both married. Am a gr/mother.
Please let me hear from you again. I am on aol. and my screen name is CiarasAngel. Sometimes these msg boards block email addresses, so I thought I would try sending it that was.
Take care,

16798 Hi,

I am looking for ancestors in Pleisweiler-Oberhofen, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany. What I know :

Peter Franz (Pierre François) SCHAUER, born : 20/03/1803, in Pleisweiler, death : 16/05/1874, in Le Havre, France

Father : Jacob SCHAUER, death : 22/05/1810, in Pleisweiler, age : 40 years, son of : Caspar Schaurer and Margueritha Dietrich,

Mother : Elisabetha BOELZER (BÖLZER), death : 13/12/1805 in Pleisweiler, age : 30 years.

They used to live in the house N° 63. Where it was in Pleisweiler ? When SCHAUER and BOLZER were married ?

Thank you for your help !

Regards
Henri

Hi,

I am from France, looking for ancestors from the SCHAUER family because one of thememigrated to France : Pierre Francois (Petrus Franciscus) SCHAUER, born 11/15/1803, in Pleisweiler.

Pleisweiler (actual name Pleisweiler-Oberhofen, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany) was a French village from 1791 to 1814. Then it was returned to Pfalz, Bavaria.

From different certificates in France, his parents are :

- father : Jacobus SCHAUER,
- mother : Elizabeth BOLZER,

both died before 1836.

Pleisweiler (also written Bleisweiller or Pleisweiller) is closed to Bad Bergzabern where the name SCHAUER seems not rare.

Any information on them will be greatly appreciated !
